The shell is refined, but inside, he’s just a crazy bastard.

Sa Do-jin, the section chief of the Criminal Investigation Division at the Seoul Central Police Agency.

Ever since Do-jin took over, Hye-jun, the leader of Team 1, has been at odds with him at every turn, engraving a long history of clashes.

Do-jin is highly competent but completely devoid of humanity in his methods. Feeling the disconnect, Hye-jun never backed down, stubbornly challenging him every step of the way, even if it meant becoming the icon of defiance.

“There are exactly two standards for the tasks you need to handle, Team Leader Nam Hye-jun. Do you know what they are?”

“Yes. Right and wrong.”

“What I ordered and what I didn’t order.”

The only things Hye-jun received in return were Do-jin’s cold arrogance and sarcastic comments from their colleagues:

“If you two are so obsessed with each other, why don’t you just date already?”

But at some point, things began to change.

Despite their constant friction, they worked surprisingly well together on investigations. So much so that it was almost ironic.

As a subtle tension began to rise between them, Hye-jun realized that he was becoming unusually conscious of Do-jin…

“Don’t worry. Even if the entire human race went extinct and it was just you and me left, I wouldn’t ask you to sleep with me, sir.”

“All the human race? Just the two of us?”

“Yeah.”

“If it’s just the two of us, why wouldn’t you ask?”

“…What?”

“If there was just us, feel free to ask. I’ll gladly say yes.”

This is, without a doubt, the best Korean novel I’ve read so far and that’s not an exaggeration in the slightest. From the very first chapters, Partner quietly proves how exceptional it is, and by the end, it leaves you wondering how a story this good can still be so criminally underrated.

What truly sets this novel apart is its slow-burn romance, executed with an almost painful level of precision. Nothing is rushed. Every glance, every argument, every moment of emotional distance feels intentional. The relationship develops so naturally that you... more>> don’t even notice how deeply invested you’ve become until it’s far too late. Instead of relying on dramatic shortcuts, the author allows tension and affection to build through time, shared experiences, and unresolved emotions and the payoff is incredibly satisfying.

The writing itself is another standout. Tehanu’s prose is sharp yet restrained, balancing emotional depth with subtle humor. The dialogue feels alive, especially during the constant bickering between the leads. Their banter isn’t just entertaining it reveals character, power dynamics, and emotional walls that slowly crack over time. Every argument has weight, and every sarcastic remark feels earned rather than performative.

The characters are exceptionally well-written, with flaws that make them feel real rather than frustrating. Both leads are complex, emotionally guarded, and shaped by their pasts in believable ways. Watching them clash, misunderstand each other, and slowly learn how to coexist is one of the most rewarding aspects of the story. Their growth doesn’t happen overnight; it’s gradual, messy, and deeply human. Even side characters feel purposeful, adding texture to the narrative instead of simply filling space.

What makes Partner especially memorable is how it handles emotional tension. The story doesn’t rely on constant external drama; instead, it thrives on internal conflict pride, fear, longing, and vulnerability. There’s a quiet intensity running beneath the surface of the entire novel, making even mundane scenes feel charged. You can sense what’s left unsaid, and that lingering tension is what keeps you turning pages.

It’s genuinely baffling that this novel isn’t talked about more. In a genre full of familiar tropes, Partner stands out for its maturity, restraint, and emotional intelligence. It deserves far more recognition and, hopefully, wider attention will lead to more translators picking it up so international readers can fully experience its brilliance.

In short, Partner is the kind of novel that stays with you long after you finish reading. It’s thoughtful, emotionally rich, and beautifully written a rare gem that deserves every ounce of praise it gets and far more than it currently has. <<less
