Every moment that remained in his memory was filled with Choi Taegyeom.

Choi Taegyeom was a dominant Alpha, but because of the Omegas’ excessive behavior, he especially hated them. As his childhood friend, I naturally became his only place of comfort.

“‘It’s a relief that you’re a Beta.'”

I thought it was a relief. I was satisfied with the fact that, because I was a Beta, I could stay by his side. And only later did I realize that these feelings were never the kind a friend should have.

But that winter, I manifested as an Omega.

“…Lee Yoonwoo?”

It felt like my breath stopped. My heart pounded helplessly at the sound of him calling my name, those three syllables. If I didn’t calm down, it felt like the remnants of emotions I had never properly put away would spill out.

“You…”

A year spent repeating school, and four years apart because of the military. After a total of five years of absence, I reunited with Choi Taegyeom.

For the first time in five years, five long years, I could feel the pheromones filling the air once again.

I enjoy the childhood friends, secretly in love, mutually pinning trope and within that genre this one falls in the middle. Particularly it falls within the expectations of those tropes and that's not bad, especially since I'm here for that. An easy read, sometimes entertaining, sometimes frustrating, sometimes sweet and comforting. Nonetheless, how some situations unfolded and characters acted did mildly surprise me a few times, often in a way that I did not like, but props to the author for making that happen despite the predictability of the overall... more>> storyline.

Noteworthy is that from the synopsis and exposition, one would expect the MC (who avoided ML for 5 years) to continue running away, but many times the MC is the much more active partner in moving their relationship forward. Because both MC and ML have unresolved issues, the push and pull go both ways. Liking the other so much but unable to confess, protecting oneself while hurting the other, both are very self-serving as expected for the nature of this type of story--unfortunately here for me its not the degree that is aggravating but the lack of self-awareness or consequences. Naturally, the MC and ML are flawed but getting to the ML's pov is very important in understanding his character, since before his perspective he was all over the place and came across as carelessly willful. His side of the story made him many times more likeable, particularly because MC's aloof personality narrowed the scope of our understanding of many situations and ML's much broader awareness fleshed out the narrative.

Yet, by the end of the main story I was still not fond of our MC and ML individually, although as a main couple it was sweet to see them together and find happiness in their relationship. As young adults they deserve some leeway, and I often enjoy immature characters too, but our main characters felt like highschool youths instead of college seniors. To the point that I did not understand why they couldn't have been just a few years younger at least and why MC had to have gone to the army when that backstory did absolutely nothing for him characterization-wise except add more years to his stubbornness. To that point, I didn't quite understand the narrative choice to extend the separation to 5 years when it could have easily been 2-3 years. By the conclusion of the main story, I ended up liking the junior love interest much better, who was younger by 5 years but despite his greenness also came across as more appropriately mature and considerate. Honestly, I didn't care for the way MC treated the junior.

Additionally, despite the main conflict involving MC's omega status and the lengths he went to hide it, I could not emotionally connect to his conflict. From the MC's side, I missed the aspect of his yearning and inner turmoil, perhaps because MC felt very simple-minded and the time we spent in his head was mostly spent admiring, caring for, and pursuing the ML. Although it fits his personality as he often forgets everything when with and thinking about ML. Surprisingly, when we reached ML's pov I connected to the ML's yearning, inner turmoil, and pain much more easily.

I also found the major story happenings and events that I often look forward to in these type of stories underwhelming
