“The heyday of movie actor Bae Geon-woo comes to an abrupt end. Overlapping strokes of misfortune send his popularity plummeting, and like escaping to the United States, he disappears.

“You’re more handsome there than in your face.”

Damn Mitchell Cronenworth.

A renowned actor who swallowed Hollywood and a serious sufferer of love deficiency.

After he moves in next door, Geon-woo coincidentally discovers his secret.

Swearing to keep the secret, Geon-woo becomes obsessed with him after exchanging n*de videos with a pledge.

“I hope I’ve invaded your mind.”

Geon-woo’s excessive possessiveness is directed towards Mitchell.

Mitchell teaches Geon-woo a perfect way to possess him.

“Enough of that. Let’s eat you.”

“…Eat me?”

“Mix our bodies, yours and mine. Then we can never be apart.”

At some point, Mitchell also starts obsessing over Geon-woo.

“Do you ever think about loving me?”

The novel is good but the translation is like an mtl, I cannot understand anything, it felt so bad because this novel have lots lots of good attributes to offer, I hope another person will pick this novel up🙏 (I cannot change the rating from 1 to 3 anymore, but I'm giving it a 3 because of its plot)

2/5 star rating.

Reading status: DNF. (Chapter 158)

---

... more>> This novel isn't exactly what's described in the summary.

  • I was expecting a dark, obsessive romance with tension, manipulation and an eventual escalation where both Geon-woo and Mitchell mirror each other’s possessiveness? Turns out, I was wrong.
---

My confusion starts here...

Mitchell comes across as the more obsessive character, which creates an odd dynamic since Geon-woo is the one who’s supposed to have that defining trait?

Instead, Geon-woo is written like a standard uke... timid and indecisive, and at times... yielding.

  • On one hand, this makes their relationship easier to slot into the story, but on the other hand, it undermines the story’s potential.
A version where Geon-woo stayed in the uke role but carried the obsession, with all its intensity and contradictions could have been far more compelling.

The novel struggles because of the mismatch between MC and ML. If Geon-woo was written to subvert uke stereotypes, this story would have been quite unique.

Don't come into this story being some psychological crazy shit, because it's not. The obsession is still there but once you read it, it's an unhealthy coping mechanism that slowly gets more healthy as the relationship progresses, becoming a normal romance. So don't come into this story thinking it's going to be super toxic, because it really isn't. Just moments where you feel like "brother stand up for yourself" and then you realize "oh he's into that sh*t okay".

It's a mostly lighthearted story, and they communicate pretty well surprisingly, they're... more>> just kinda cowardish lol, but they are super transparent with each other that you can't help but really like their romance in the end.

They don't abandon the actor aspect of their story either and is pretty important. I say this because I feel like a lot of stories that revolve around a certain interest start getting dropped for relationship building, which isn't bad per say but I do love seeing them act.

They're just a somewhat healthy freak4freak couple, give this a chance.

Spoiler

I will say this about the side stories, they never fully reveal their relationship which is kind of annoying in my opinion but what can I do about it

Genuinely surprised why the ratings are so low... Fated lovers trope but this time it starts off with an obsessive MC which I love because their freaks are literally matched. Not much happens as in every issue is solved pretty quick and I wish there were more extras, but oh well I'll give this 5 stars to boost the rating.

Honestly, this book took me a very long time to finish. Not because it was lengthy, but because I kept taking a break. I didn't necessarily dislike this book, but it wasn't exactly what I expected either. A large amount of my disappointment lies in the character, Geon-Woo. I expected a dark read with an obsessive MC, and while yes, he was obsessive, he himself was not "dark" or even dangerous. In fact, he was very childlike and easily manipulated. I expected him to be the one taking the lead... more>> in the relationship because he was self aware and knew what he required of the object of his obsession, but the ML was the one leading everything. Surprisingly, Geon-Woo was your stereotypical submissive, uke, who lived for doing whatever the ML wanted, even if it made him uncomfortable. His inability to say no to the ML, Mitchell, made this book boring at times, because if one person in the relationship is always submitting there's not really much to look forward to. Then those few times Geon-Woo did voice his dissatisfaction, I couldn't even take him seriously because his thought process, dialogue and actions were so childlike, and in the end, he'd still break. I truly wondered how he functioned in society without Mitchell.

Another reason I kept taking breaks is because at times, I felt like the book was unnecessarily full of angst. Again, I knew this was a dark read but there were AT LEAST four antagonists. And it wasn't even a group. There were several individuals, with no relation, who would just pop out and cause issues. And when they did, Geon-woo was pretty much useless in solving problems so Mitchell would take over. Mitchell was basically the dark lead I expected Geon-Woo to be because he was the one using his power & wealth to get things done. Geon-Woo could almost be referred to as a Gary Sue, which just goes back to my initial problem. For someone so obsessive, he didn't really take care of the object of his obsession aka Mitchell. Going back to the antagonists though, I felt like the more they showed up, the more their actions got out of hand, and almost all of them walked away without any serious or life-altering punishments. The problem I had with this is that the author would have the characters go wayyyy over the line and yet some of these actions didn't do anything to move the story along. It felt like gratuitous violence or chaos.

Spoiler

For example, Geon-Woo's brother was a leech who framed Geon-Woo, ruining his reputation in Korea, and followed Geon-Woo to the U.S. After running out of money. While in the U.S, he continued to leech off of Geon-Woo until he was finally cut off. At one point, he was living in a dirty motel and someone attempted to rob him, so he beat and SA'd the guy. Then it was never mentioned again. The story just moved right past the assault and Geon-Woo's brother found someone else to mooch off of. Then after a case of mistaken identity, he was beaten by another antagonist and finally decided to return to Korea, where Mitchell bought a Cafe for him to run. So basically no permanent consequences and an unnecessary SA scene with a character that had previously never been attracted to men or even curious, or shown any sign of sadism.

My desire to know how Geon-Woo would realize he was not just obsessed but actually in love with Mitchell was the only thing that kept me reading. This took FOREVER so the story just dragged and dragged. To be clear, I didn't hate this couple, but the actual relationship between the characters seemed less romantic and more like they were trauma bonding. I'm familiar with obsessive characters but these two were attached at the hip. I felt like the relationship was based on codependency rather than "I just love this person so much that I want to spend every second with them" (I don't know if this makes sense 😅). I truly just wish a lot of things had been done differently and I wish Geon-Woo had been allowed to be the obsessive MC described in the synopsis rather than the weak, submissive character we got. <<less
