Born into a wealthy and influential family, Mu Rong Qingyi accidentally rescues Ren Susu from a runaway horse at a riding club. This chance encounter sparks a romance between the aristocratic young man and the humble girl—was it fate or karma?

After one night of passion, Mu Rong Qingyi leaves the country, forgetting about Ren Susu entirely for four long years. When they meet again four years later, she is on stage portraying the tragic character Zhu Yingtai in a performance, while he watches her from the audience, captivated by her still-beautiful face. This reunion reveals a shocking truth: they had a child together, who had to be sent away. The loss of their child awakens his feelings of love and guilt.

Under his vow to stay by her side through life and death, they finally tie the knot. However, Ren Susu, born into a humble background, struggles to navigate her love for him with caution. The vast gap in social status and irreconcilable personality differences eventually lead to an irreversible tragedy. After seventeen years of separation and hardship, they journey through life’s trials, forever connected yet painfully apart.

I stumbled upon the news that this novel is going to be adapted into a drama, and out of curiosity, I rushed to read it. While I can wholeheartedly say it's beautifully written, the author masterfully captures the FL's anguish, the ML's inner conflict, and the overall dramatic intensity. But, It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Here are a few reasons why the story left a bitter taste in my mouth:

Spoiler
    • I understand that in the historical context of this novel, it was common for men to keep other women behind their wives' backs, but it doesn't make it any easier to accept. Watching it unfold in this story was upsetting, no matter how normalized it was in that era.
    • The lack of communication between ML and FL was frustrating. I get that FL had her fears, but after a certain point, the silence felt excessive and emotionally draining. It often seemed like ML was constantly venting or lashing out, while FL just endured everything in silence. The imbalance in their emotional expression made it hard to stay connected to their relationship.
    • ML's temper is something else, volatile to the extreme. And above all, he is UNFAITHFUL. No matter how deeply you claim to love someone, if you truly care, self-restraint should come naturally. I suppose it's no surprise considering his father displayed the same behavior, but still, it doesn't excuse it.
      [collapse]
That said, I do appreciate how the extra chapter managed to soften the heaviness of the story. It provided a much-needed lighter tone to wrap things up, leaving the readers with a sense of closure.

In the end, it's a short read, and if you're curious especially with the upcoming drama adaptation, it's still worth giving it a try. Just be prepared :D
