Wei Huan, the sole heir of the powerful demon lineage of the Nine Phoenixes, sacrificed himself in a counter-ambush, only to miraculously be reborn on the enemy’s side as a helpless and powerless human.

For the sake of uncovering the truth, Wei Huan is forced to return to his alma mater, the Demon Realm’s most prestigious educational institution Shanhai Academy, to become the first human student in history. He unlocks the thrilling campus scenario, “I Am the Only Human Here”.

Among his worries, there’s one thing Wei Huan fears the most: his nemesis from his previous life. After all, even though he possessed the skill of “Ninefold Disguise,” the vigilant Golden Crow saw right through him every time.

Wei Huan: “Why were you able to recognize me at a glance?”

Yun Yongzhou: “Because I’m your husband.”

[Can changing my identity this time around save me from the consequences of my past mistakes?]

This novel had an interesting synopsis with a 3.8 overall rating, but none of the reviews gave me a clear answer on what the novel was about or like. So I read it myself to find out.

The novel features Wei Huan, a powerful + very attractive social guy with strong family background who believes strongly in positive impact on the world and doesn't support war or unnecessary bloodshed. This is a very normal perspective to have, unfortunately he lives in a world where there is overt and covert war ongoing... more>> between human and demon factions. Demons have demonic powers and spells, while human have technology.

Wei Huan lived during a time when humans and demons had supposedly signed a peace treaty and things were calmer (basically instead of open warfare they were using secret warfare, but the public was told it was peaceful times). He was the only heir of the Nine Phoenixes family and went to the most prestigious private university in all of world (including both human and demon realms). He has two close friends since young age, and then he met another powerful + very attractive guy (Yun Yongzhou) with a strong family background, but this guy is not very social, has a stronger penchant for violence and his own hidden motivations and goals. Wei Huan's motivation in life is to get a cushy job as a teacher and chill for the rest of his life, no going to war, no major struggles (his father was a general).

With this background, Wei Huan dies mysteriously
Spoiler

(and yes this is so mysterious that despite all speculations in the novel, it is never explained)

. The novel begins with him waking up in a research facility without his demonic powers, and realizing that he is a human now. This is quite unusual because while there is reincarnation for humans, once a demon dies (along with their demon core - which holds their soul and is needed to be harmed to kill a demon) they can never come back. Yes, bringing back demons is a near impossible thing. So how did he, a powerful demon, come back to life, especially as a human.

With his frail body he attempts to escape the facility and gets tangled with a guy who aids him, but during this escape he is shot with a poisoned dart and passes out. The guy brings him to a safe base and from them he is informed about how much time has passed since his death and also that he is now poisoned severely with only like 2 weeks to live.

But fear not, there is a very hard to attain cure, which he lacks the ability to get back, at his alma mater from past life. And so he, as a human, attempts to enroll into the prestigious academy which has only ever had demon students. This is where the name "I am the only human here" comes from.

From here the story unfolds: a mystery romance, as he meets people from his past life, makes new friends and tries to uncover the mystery of his revival, death and so much more. (This happens in the first 4-5 chapters, so I don't believe any of these are spoilers)

The plot of this novel is interesting, but the execution is a bit lacking. The author tells a lot of things, but none of it is truly shown. We get to know how one characters is stronger than others, but the details on why are left to vague phrases like "strong bloodline", "as expected of _" and bystanders talking about how strong someone is.

There are several scenes where characters are severely injured one moment, and emotional bonding is happening, but then magically after some emotional bonding they are back to fighting the enemies. This is partially explained by regenerative abilities, but that makes you question why anyone was even reacting the way they did when the character got injured. If the character can recover, whats the point of a dramatic overreaction. More importantly, why was the enemy not attacking while everyone was emotional bonding with the injured person.

A lot of the plot is told between recurring flashbacks to past and present, which is a nice little trick but when the switches happen too often especially in the middle of a chapter with no build up, it creates a disconnect between the reader and the plot.

The side characters are quite interesting, and honestly some of them I found to be more interesting than the main characters. But some of them only exist as an aid to plot and their personalities are not well-rounded (cannon-fodder if you will, but not necessarily characters that are useless).

The mystery is quite interesting though. I would say it was the strongest part of the novel and became the main reason I read to the end. But even in it there are elements of hodgepodge. With several things left unanswered at the end (although the extras are very enjoyable, they don't answer these questions either).
Spoiler

For example the main truth behind how Wei Huan died is never revealed, nor is it explained where the video of him speaking came from. But we do find where his original body went (it was missing for most of the plot).

.

The romance between MC and ML is straightforward, but it felt unpolished. This made it feel like author neither did a great job at romance, nor at the plot. But overall did an average job at everything. The ending is satisfactory so I can't complain. So in conclusion I believe this novel is indeed deserving of the 3.8 star rating. It doesn't fit a higher or lower rating.

Comparison to Mo Dao Zu Shi: Yes, there are similar vibes. With the past and present switches. Both ML and MC being OP. One of them dying and coming back in a new body. A close friend believing MC is the cause of their kin's death. Loving someone for many years while they are dead. Side characters personalities had some similarities. But thats about it. The plot itself is still different and even the character backgrounds and motivations are different. If you said someone was writing an AU fanfic for mo dao zu shi and then decided to make it a full original story of their own, that is plausible. But as a story itself, this is not the same as that. It builds upon its own narrative and follows it to the end. <<less

Love this so far, only wish there were more chapters translated to read. Similar to modaozushi in a sense. Jiufeng is pretty cute, really wanna see what happens next with Yun Yongzhuo. How hard can it be to learn chinese... reading all these novels would be so much easier 😭

Yes, it really feels like Wei Ying and Lan Zhan haha. But here, there’s less of the mystery plot and more fighting (•̀ᴗ•́) و ̑̑ plot
