After being fired, Lu Qingjiu finally decided to return to his hometown to farm.

At first, he started raising a pig, and then he found that the pig could solve more high-level math questions than he could.

After that, he started raising a flock of chickens, and then he found that his own fighting ability was one-tenth of that of a single chicken.

Finally, Lu Qingjiu finally realised that this old home wasn’t quite right… Especially a certain person by his side who constantly stared at him day in and day out.

Lu Qingjiu: “Are you drooling because of the spicy stir-fry I’m holding or because of me?”

Bai Yuehu pointed at the stir-fry.

Lu Qingjiu: “Then can you let go??”

Bai Yuehu reluctantly glanced at Lu Qingjiu’s arm, before loosening his teeth.

I don't like slice-of-life usually, but this was enjoyable! The food descriptions were balanced out with the supernatural plot, and I appreciate that. Didn't get bored reading it in one go, surprisingly.

I think the MC and ML suit each other, and their personalities are pretty solid. Not toxic (unless you count the inhuman ML having an age gap because inhuman/fantasy) despite the... ML's natural tendency for vore. XD Dw about that too much though; there's nothing explicit or overboard between the MC and ML imo.

I think the side characters are... more>> absolutely lovely! The MC's childhood friend was adorably hilarious. A real ride-or-die bro who didn't feel annoying or like he was intruding on the MC & ML. The female side character was also not annoying thankfully.

The ending was a bit predictable, but I think overall the story was pretty good. Foodgasms, a bit of supernatural plot, a chill romance, great side characters, and a decent ending. <<less

The food, the ~mystery of the week~ vibe, the heart wrenching moments I didn't expect going in. Gosh, Fantasy Farm was everything I was hoping it would be and more. I love the slow burn romance. MC and ML really get to feel like characters on their own, and their other relationships are fleshed out and vibrant. The romance itself is very sweet and kind of refreshingly blase.

I'm seriously going to miss this novel. 😭 (Also I would describe Fantasy Farm as a kind of adult cast Chinese Natsume Yuujinchou... more>> like vibe? With a more serious plot that builds up through the narrative. This is 10000% my niche, so I hope this description helps someone else pick it up too.) <<less

Very unique story with a set of characters that are easy to love, both male and female. I loved all the food and cooking in the story as well, but that's the part of me that loves slice-of-life stories. ^^ If you want action packed drama, this is not the story for you (although there is some action here and there). If you want slice-0f-life with supernatural aspects, come on over. =)

This novel is really great! Reminds me a lot of Natsume Yuuchinchou. This is a novel about the quite life living in the country side along with the mysteries that exist in the unknown.

.............

“At first, I thought that the crow was calling my name in order to lead me out, ” Lu Qingjiu said, “Afterwards, I thought about it more carefully.” His tone was a little pained, “Say, do you think that even when I’m not there, the crow would still be calling my name?”

This is like a story with all my favorite genres rolled into one. It’s hilarious, the horror is subtle and creepy, it’s bl, the characters are awesome ?

It’s a great slice of life that has a sort of episodic mystery type plot that slowly adds up into a little world of its own. The translation is amazing too!

As a bonus there’s lots of awesome food in this story (and the translator does an amazing job of including all of these mouth-watering pictures of the dishes). Although this may be a... more>> form of torture, since it looks sooooooo good ?? <<less

An amazing, slice-of-life novel which manages to hit you with equal doses of tragedy and comedy at surprisingly intervals in the same chapter.

Ofcourse, it's not very angsty. Just that one chapter, you are smacking your lips and the next chapter a tragic past memory makes its way and the next chapter you are laughing your ass off at the FF inhabitants' antics...

The romance is pretty slow but beautiful.

MC is a gentle, warm and open-minded/ accepting all weird sh*t happening around kind of a person. He has always been able to... more>> see/ hear weird supernatural stuff so he manages to accept new creatures after a brief surprise.

ML will initially come off as violent and hungry. But as the novel progresses, readers will realise that he is actually pretty good, childish and strangely obedient to MC despite being a gazillion times stronger than MC.

We cannot forget MC's best friend - his presence in the novel is extremely constant and frequent, he could very well be one of the main characters. Like all other 3D characters in the novel, he comes off as a silly but warm-hearted and kind farmer but as the novel progresses, you will ofcourse realise that his past is tragic.

This novel has managed to maintain its comedic and slice of life undertone despite most characters having terrible, painful and tragic pasts that should have built up more angst.

I highly, highly recommend this novel.

Special mention to the TL (Chrysanthemum Garden) - Super good TLs with yummy food pics. <<less

"I don't see nothin'" might as well be the main theme of the story, which is an incredibly sensible way of dealing with the supernatural. See no evil, hear no evil etc. It's amazing how quickly the characters back off at the question 'Do you really want to know?'

Lol, it made for a lot of hilarious moments, with a lot of nods of understandings, most of them amounting to 'Yaaaa, let's not talk about this, ever.'

Also, I really enjoy the cooking scenes. The protagonist making all kinds of sensible meat... more>> filled dishes for his various friends and moochers, but is also able to casually talk about making soy sauce and stuff. If the setting had been in the ancient past, I might not have believed that someone below 30 could make all these stuff, but this is the information age where one could find recipes for miso, soy sauce, preserved beancurd etc, so kudos for all the delicious images! <<less

The characters are rather nice, MC is your normal everyman. The supposed love interest is a fox spirit taking the form of a handsome man, he's constantly ravenous for food. MC just resigned from a company that constantly overworked him, decides to move back to his ancestral home out in the country. Only... the place is chock full of supernatural beings, many of them malevolent. Pretty much every day is a horror story of something trying to devour or haunt the MC, but he cooks meals for the fox which... more>> then either chases off or eats said threat.

I say supposed love interest because, well, frankly there has been zero BL up to this point. Nothing s*xual or romantic has gone on between the two lead characters, its all been focused on food and horrific beings. If I hadn't seen the shounen ai tag and the novel being on a BL themed translator's website, I'd assume there wasn't any content like that in the entire series.

Honestly, its a fun read, I like the x-files monster of the week feeling going on. <<less

Let's be honest, this is cooking novel. Over half is dedicated to cooking food, discussing how delicious mc's food is, and getting ingredients to get said food. The actual character elements are there for some light comedy and the occasional spook here and there.

As someone who has made the food in the novel or had it, the food parts honestly do not appeal to me. More often than not I find myself wishing the novel would just get on with it since I find the horror elements and the supernatural... more>> parts fascinating.

If you don't mind this detail, this is a pretty good time waster. <<less

Dropped

I thought it would be a nice pace of slice of life, but the plot is just frustratingly dragging. The author won't just get to the main point and continues adding more and more chapters about food, cooking, in other words fillers. Gosh this reminds me of detective Conan where there's mainly fillers compared to actual plot.

I know the MC wanted this type of life but having chapters upon chapters of cooking and farming is just plainly boring. I got bored and tired of reading the same pace over and... more>> over again to the point I started skipping paragraphs to finish the chapter but the next chapter is the same all over again.

Also, there's something lacking in their relationship. I just couldn't feel it. They kept saying that they were in love, but I couldn't feel it. It wasn't worded out correctly <<less

Great so far!!! Foodgasm at its finest!

However, Tea Novel translations are just machine translation (which I find to be just nonsense when I read).

CG, the original translators, is actually looking for a translator to pick it up so I'd greatly appreciate anyone coming forward! Begging for anyone!!!!

Someone on CG picked it up! There's a continuation, woohooo!

A really fun, funny and interesting story! Such an entertaining read, with a cast of amazing characters.

The only downside is that from Chapter 96 to 120, the translator is by Tea Novel. All translations by Tea Novel is barely disguised MTL. They have the wrong pronouns (sometimes the pronoun changes mid-sentence!), gibberish sentences, wrong names, the whole lot. I hope someone eventually finishes off the translation so we get a smooth complete read.

So.... What can I say in 6 chapters so far?

Apparently enough, because these chapters are nice and long~ translator said that the chapters get shorter, though, from this point on. :/

Have you ever encountered a slice-of-life with tastes of mystery/suspense and supernatural (mild) horror and regular doses of food p*rn? How does an author mix those supposedly-contradicting genres without involving drama, intense romance, and overbearing/possessive/jealous MCs/MLs?

You can say the characters are simple, but that's part of this novel's charm. They're easy-going, so they don't rashly rush into action. Being SOL,... more>> they also don't weigh to heavily on the romance (yet), but there's potential. You know, reach a man's heart through their stomach~ and I love how, even though I'm not used to slow rural-types with few humans around, this MC doesn't give off any lonely vibes because this is what he grew up with, and the local community supports him.

Pigs are so cute. And tasty. And now the chickens arrived. I look forward to watching the summary unfold, but do I dare hunger [literally] for more? <<less

4/5

If you're a fan of slice of life, food, and the type that loves filler episodes when it comes to long animes, this one is for you. I love those, so it checks all the boxes for me. Especially with the way the author teases us with mysterious plot points, this was very good. I would have even given this a 4.5/5, however, I'm not sure because if its because of the MTL quality of the last 30 ish chapters of Fantasy Farm, but the ending (big main plot) seemed... more>> lack lustre after the whole build up. The whole thing is 100 over chapters long and I don't really blame the author for forgetting the important flags she raised. Quite a bit went unexplained, just glossed over during the extras.

Tldr: casual read, love the food/cooking element and rural living vibe <<less

I really like this, it’s very chill and fluffy without becoming boring. It has enough amounts of angst/drama to spice it up from time to time without becoming like a soap opera. I like the MC quite a lot too, he’s got a lot of common sense and is quite open-minded but is still funny and not OP. While the ML does seem to be a bit OP it’s actually believable and not in an omnipotent way, he’s very real (for a supernatural being) and makes mistakes too.
Even though... more>> the romance is developing quite slow, I don’t even notice how long it’s been since the first chapter. The story is entertaining enough without having to lean on MC/ML romance drama (though I’m excitedly awaiting for it to happen, they’re so cute 🥰).

It’s kind of like a hybrid of the Manga/Anime N*tsume Y*jinchō and the Korean variety show 3 Meals a Day.

My only complaint is that it makes me gain weight, I keep eating because they keep eating 😭 (my grocery and delivery bills have gone up too.... at least I’ve learned new recipes) <<less

I usually dislike over-repetition and find them boring (which ends with me dropping the novel), but there's something about Fantasy Farm that I can't just stop reading it to the point that I mtled it in one seating after reading the translated chapters a few months ago. I can't let it go omfg, even now as I write this, the scenes are still stark in my mind. It's utterly refreshing, at times sad (realistically too, in my opinion. The angst isn't overexaggerated and just about right) and over all, it's... more>> wholesome. 10/10 would reread in my free time (not that I haven't two times already).

Also:

Spoiler

It should be called "Fantasy Village" lmao. It's not just the farm that's filled with supernatural creatures, the entire village is, along with the residents. God, like, I had my doubts because from time to time it's kinda obvious? But I was still not prepared for it when it was ultimately revealed. The villagers doesn't even know they're dead OTL

I missed the horror tag before I started on this one (only saw the supernatural) and I'll have you know I always exclude this tag. I'm the type who closes their eyes when watching horror movies. And always follow it up with a romcom or a comedy show.

Now I'm stuck in between wanting to know what happens but I'm also afraid it will be more than I can handle... QAQ. Well for now the food LQJ makes and BYH's presence is helping me forward

The novel is 4 ⭐️, minus a million stars for that translation. I switched to the mtl and I found it easier to understand.

Pros:

-the friendships and side characters

-interesting plot and concept

-enjoyed the little mini supernatural segues

-liked the characters

-Yin Xun, poor kid needs a hug

Cons:

-the food, waaayyyyy too much time spent on food and it was annoying

-not that big of a fan of their relationship once they were together. Can’t figure out exactly why

-THE FOOD, again, there was so much food p*rn

I really like the MC's personality / attitude in this story, the way he calmly / comically accepts things haha. Paired with his childhood friend and the ML, this is a super entertaining trio! It's definitely a slice of life story, and even for slow romance this is really quite slow, but I really enjoy their relationship so far. It's built on mutual respect, and unlike many other MLs I find this one super refreshing. Not only is he willing to do dirty work even though he's super OP, the... more>> farming and washing dishes, to spare up MC's time (although ulterior motives are present..), he's a glutton and ridiculously lazy. He also helps the MC a lot and never really intentionally hides anything from him.

As a glutton myself, I like that there's also a lot of food p*rn in this story! Side characters are also comical and unique, like the ghost that fixes balding. I also got quite a few shivers reading this story. It's not scary or anything though, so if the horror tag is s a deterrence don't let it be. <<less

At first it is a slice of life, food forward slow story. Then magical elements come into it. The further into the story, the darker and more ghostly and mysterious elements come in. It's still super food heavy, but there are some tone changes that bring in heavier elements.

While reading this, just keep in mind that there is a change in energy so don't expect the sweet and funny plot to continue till the end.

Relaxed but not boring. Slice of life but not slow.

There are so many cute and laugh... more>> out loud moments. It's a fun read.

The characters are all well developed.

Very mild spice. When the couple finally gets together, (which takes a long time) it does the fade to black and the walk funny in the morning deal.

(I wish the couple was reversible/would switch back and forth, I think it would work with their personalities.)

Spoiler

Dragons have 2 dicks. 🤔😲

[collapse]

A minor complaint is that there are some great side characters that because of how interesting they are or how they get a little story to themselves, I wish they were included a bit more. However, in saying that, the story would be twice as long, (not that I would complain about that) and I don't know how they could be included when the story itself is so well paced. So it's just a useless complaint really. The story doesn't feel like it's missing anything by not including them more, it's just that I wanted to know a bit more and have like spin off chapters or day in the life without the main character, etc type of thing.

It is well translated and only has a couple of minor grammar errors with he/she.

The teanovel site is a bit problematic. You can't click next to go to the next chapter. Every time it goes to ch.118. So 99-118, 102-118, etc. There are also more errors.

The ending..... oh the ending. It is great and disappointing at the same time. I am happy enough with how it ends, but so much is left unsaid. Small threads from throughout the story from the beginning just get left in the dust. It feels like there should be more.

The first 1/3 of the story is just amazing. Then it's like a slow decline as more serious and sad things get added and it builds into this sad and chaotic mess where you will get teary. I still enjoyed it, but it almost felt like one of those stories or drawings where you have 2 people and one person starts it and the other person ends it. The tone shift is worked, but I would have loved it if it just stayed the same happy mystical food journey.

I will read this again, but I think I will just read the first half. <<less

Read up to chapter 94 and MTL'd the rest. The MTL is about 80% understandable, but there are some hilariously bad mistranslations at some points.

This is mostly a comedic slice-of-life novel. It does get boring at times but I keep coming back to it because of the mouthwatering food descriptions *q* There is an overarching plot, but it progresses very slowly until the last 5 to 10 chapters.

The romance is very sweet, even though there's a lot of third wheelers *cough Yin Xun cough*

A slow paced, slow burn, slice of life story with a touch of supernatural & mystery. The climax is at the very end and while it's suspenseful & heartrending, it was solved quickly enough with quite a satisfying conclusion. ML & MC didn't fall in love at first sight, in fact ML only regards MC as meal tickets at first while MC never consider man as target of affection. Though the romance is sparse, they grow closer naturally. MC knows what he wants & take the first steps (and ML... more>> finish it LoL). Love how independent & self-aware MC is.

Spoiler:

Things that I find sad is that MC's grandfather & grandmother never resolved their misunderstanding until the very end (I know, grandma has passed away even before the story start, but still, they are the linchpin). I wish grandfather can get some closure at the very least. He's been through so much and can't even get a happy ending with his grandson. While the villain can't be considered evil, they are the epitome of doing wrong for the greater good. Unfortunately the one who got sacrificed is MC's whole family. All's well that ends well doesn't sounds so good when you think about the one that suffer. <<less
