The best way to describe this novel is feeling nostalgic for a moment you have never experienced.

This danmei in particular has stuck with me. I feel that people who describe this as 'boring' aren't particularly seeing the entire picture. The moments of realisation and spark between the pair is what electrifies the novel.

I think that one of the reasons that I'm drawn to it is how the scenes play out. It's so vivid and paints such a colorful image in my mind, which is a stark contrast to the pairs... more>> difficult relationship. This is a novel that isn't meant to be digested half heartedly, but by soaking in the scenes that make the pair fall for eachother so deeply.

(a song that I reccomend playing during the flashback chapters is 'I Love You' by Fontaines D.C and 'Champagne Coast' by Blood Orange.)

Some lines and scenes that I particularly liked:
Spoiler

'Compared to the man's gaze who was locked onto the flower, everything else around him paled and lost it's shine."

"The feeling of falling in love was the same as the blossoming of a flower, in that they were both natural phenomena, inevitable and unstoppable."

"In a foreign land, far away from their home, on a narrow bed, at a night filled with exhaustion and noises stemming from the lust of someone else, a simple embrace... Those elements came together in a bizarre composition and strangely formed a subtle balance."

"Jiang Mo looked around the exhibition, Shen Zhaowen would look at him, and he would not feel bored. "

"Maybe love was something that had no fixed form. For some people, love developed after a long time of being close to each other, and for others, love came at first sight. "

", of lingering touches and tangled bodies. Every time he was the one to dominate in bed, Shen Zhaowen always had this feeling, like his body was melting, little by little. "

Very nice novel. I was starting to get bored of reading Chinese novel as there was nothing new. This was a breath of fresh air. Love it very much. It's very unique to me as I have not read a Chinese novel with this style of writing before. 💖💖💖💖

Very good story. It's different from anything I've read in months. I just have to disagree with how realistic they say the story is. They both have problems and are very real characters, but it's incredibly difficult to believe that these two end up together in real life "forever." Also not advisable because the relationship is so toxic. It's not just a troubled relationship, it's downright toxic.

One is obsessed and would submit to anything to not be abandoned. The other is an airhead who only thinks about himself, and can... more>> only be in this relationship because he has an escape valve: his escapes. He knows that the other would never abandon him, that's why he always does what he wants. I think one inspires the worst in the other, but since no one will love them with the same intensity and madness they need, they stay together.

I recommend reading it, it's well written and takes you through the ups and downs of this (un) happy relationship. <<less

Interesting take on a normal love shared between two normal individuals. Both with their own share of faults and drawbacks, and yet so full of love for the other person. No written sentences of expressions of love by the author that might seem too sentimental or make the reader think "only possible in fiction".9.5/10. Highly recommend.

This is a well written novel that honestly might not be for everyone. The author even mentioned that readers shouldn't approach the characters with bias, but of course that's easier said than done. Putting that aside, what I really want to say is that this novel is genuinely incredible. The main couple feels so realistic and layered that I could truly imagine people like them existing in real life. Their personalities, flaws, and contradictions feel painfully human.

Zhaowen is the character I relate to the most. From my perspective, he clearly... more>> struggles with abandonment issues. He's emotionally distant from most things, focused on staying afloat. He doesn't understand why people drink, why they chase love so desperately, or why they follow social norms simply because everyone else does. To me, he's a realist through and through.

But all of that composure completely collapses when it comes to Jiang Mo. Zhaowen becomes intense, possessive, and emotionally reactive. What makes him compelling is that he isn't passive at all. His abandonment issues show repeatedly, especially through his jealousy whenever someone gets close to Jiang Mo. He's constantly afraid that someone will take Jiang Mo away, or that Jiang Mo will leave on his own. At times, I genuinely felt bad for him because his fear is deeply rooted and unresolved. This is just my interpretation, but it felt very intentional in the way it was written.

Jiang Mo, on the other hand, is an idealist. He notices beauty in things most people overlook. Art, escapism, love, friendships, and human connection matter deeply to him. In some ways, I found him even more fascinating than Zhaowen because he's full of contradictions. He's passionate yet a little childish, hopeful yet painfully aware of reality.

Even though I relate more to Zhaowen, I felt more emotionally for Jiang Mo. His struggle with accepting that his dreams might never come true hit especially hard. So many people who love art never get to fully pursue it, whether it's painting, music, writing, or in Jiang Mo's case, film directing because society constantly pushes artists to give up their passion as it doesn't guarantee stability or money. Jiang Mo experiences this firsthand. He studies art, makes films, and still have to face the harsh reality that this path may not support him long term. There are some people telling him to be realistic, to get a different job, or that he's foolish for believing he could succeed as a director. To them, his dreams sound naive.

Jiang Mo refuses to accept. He wants to pursue what he loves even if the odds are against him. Compared to Zhaowen, who later becomes a successful lawyer, Jiang Mo seems like he has nothing concrete to show for all his effort. This moment especially resonated with me:

"If the environment refuses to provide me with any opportunities, I might as well make one myself in order to break the barrier. I'll do it."

"You're gonna buy yourself a dream?"

"I'm gonna make one."

This is my favorite moment! With Jiang Mo saying, "How else will I find a path that suits myself if I don't give everything a try?"

What I also really appreciated is how different Zhaowen and Jiang Mo actually are. Sometimes, while reading, I found myself thinking that they don't suit each other at all. They bicker constantly, misunderstand each other, and clash because their values and personalities are so different. But at the same time, you see them trying, again and again, to fix things. I'm not an expert on love, and I don't know if this is considered a healthy form of love, but to me it felt rewarding to see two people who genuinely cared enough to confront their problems instead of ignoring them.

Because even though they both tend to hide, or ran away, they still tries to find ways to communicate, especially as an established couple. That mattered to me. They fought, they sulked, they disagreed, and their problems didn't magically resolve in a neat or satisfying way. And I loved that. To be honest, every time Zhaowen and Jiang Mo fought, I caught myself trying to decide who was right and who was wrong. Eventually, I realized that focusing on that completely missed the point. The novel constantly pushes you to question your own judgments, and I really appreciated that.

I also loved Jiang Mo's rambling moments. His talks about his hobbies, dreams, philosophies, and even poetry felt natural and sincere. They never felt forced or out of place. Huge credit to the translators as well, because the dialogue flowed beautifully and felt alive. <<less

This is a rather interesting novel for me to try to review, as I have quite conflicting feelings about it as a whole. The writing itself was beautiful as usual from Jingan Road, and I did enjoy reading all the varied ways that her characters interacted with one another, as well as the overall scenery and plot progression. However, equally as much, I found myself so exasperated at these two main characters and how they just couldn’t stay more than a single chapter without getting into another argument. There’s just... more>> no peace between them, and after a certain point, I began to realize that they actually just enjoy arguing with each other, and actively fight against peace, with Shen Zhaowen seemingly instigating all the arguments, but also Jiang Mo fighting back in equal measure.

Shen Zhaowen likes to win at everything, control everything, and lives by his own unique set of rules that he believes everyone else should also live by, while Jiang Mo is more the go with the flow type, albeit with his own set of rules for life. While Shen Zhaowen is possessive and wants to lock Jiang Mo up so that the other man can only ever see him, Jiang Mo is a free spirit who loves to explore new relationships with people and experience the world for inspiration. However, just like Shen Zhaowen’s obsessive nature, Jiang Mo has an equally obsessive need to maintain things in the exact order that he sets in his mind, as evidenced by how requires his mugs to be arranged in a very particular way.

As the two of them are so opposed on almost every front, there really is nearly no topic that the two of them can agree on, and the only way that they’re not arguing is if Jiang Mo is actively ignoring Shen Zhaowen or if Shen Zhaowen runs out of things to say. The two of them have very strong opinions about pretty much everything, and what makes their relationship particularly interesting is how they genuinely already know how the other is and how they might react to situations, and yet still won’t make changes to adapt, rather choosing to argue instead. Truly, the most communicative couple I’ve ever met though, because they really never hold anything in, and there’s never any miscommunication between them.

While reading this novel, I really just got the sense of, wow, the two of them are just such an awful match, and yet, they still manage to stay together through it all, what possibly could be keeping them together in this toxic relationship? And the reasoning really at the end seems to be a combination of the two of them having so much history together and such a familial bond tying them together at this point that to leave just doesn’t make sense to them. Neither really ever considers the possibility of splitting up, and they both would rather just accept that they’re never going to stop arguing until the very end. It’s not even really an acceptance per say more as a cherishing of the arguing, like they wouldn’t be whole if the other wasn’t there to annoy them in some way.

Despite all of the conflict though, I will say there were many moments while reading as well where I could see just why they worked together, and why they would choose to stay with one another despite their differences. That moment near the end where Jiang Mo wanted to go hiking in the wilderness for hours on end just to see a random waterfall in the middle of the night, and Shen Zhaowen actually agreed and accompanied him on this request—I really was convinced, because who else would have agreed other than Shen Zhaowen. They truly do balance each other out, with Jiang Mo providing the sense of adventure and risk-taking, while Shen Zhaowen does the risk management. Where Jiang Mo isn’t watching out, Shen Zhaowen is there to cover for him, if only the other would accept his help.

All of the conflicts in this novel make a lot of sense, what with how well fleshed out the two characters are, and their respective thought processes during every argument are quite layered and very much understandable. I could relate a lot to both of them in many moments, and this novel made me think a lot about how I might react to conflict if I was in one of their positions, and whether I would also choose to argue back or just let it go. Something I do really love about the two of them is how they don’t tend to hold grudges against each other, and every time they find something to argue about, it’s a fresh start. Really kind of hilarious to think about though, because they genuinely are able to find things that bother them in such high quantity that they never run out of new things to be in conflict over.

Both of them honestly are exhausting people to be with in one way or another, but despite all the fighting, I did find them a good match by the end. Shen Zhaowen brings Jiang Mo a sense of comfort, while Jiang Mo brings Shen Zhaowen a sense of excitement, and they both give each other a home to return to with one another. Though Jiang Mo often leaves, Shen Zhaowen always does know he will come back, and though Shen Zhaowen always nags, he never expects Jiang Mo to actually change. They know the other won’t leave, and so they feel entirely comfortable in expressing themselves to the fullest, letting loose all their grievances pretty much immediately as they come.

While my heart doesn’t feel entirely attached to either of them individually or as a couple, I did enjoy reading their ups and downs as a couple, and how they worked through every conflict without sacrificing any part of their individual identities. I definitely went from a feeling of wanting them to break up to just being amused at how they refused to do so. Overall, a pretty good short read, and definitely made me think a lot about how I treat conflicts in my own life, if only to convince me that maybe some things just aren’t worth fighting over, as people will continue as they are regardless of how much you may try to change them. Only reason I can’t rate any higher is because I wasn’t particularly invested in this story enough to cry or even feel moved in my heart over them, as it at best was a novel that made me think a lot, which still has its merit!

Spoiler

Also side note but the 50 questions extra made me laugh so hard because of course their answers were opposites for almost all of them, the only similar one being that if they had to describe the other as a plant they’d be a tree?? Hahaha

This is a well written novel. However, I did not finish reading it. The characters has depth to them but I simply don't like their relationship. I couldn't find it in myself to rate it low because the writing style is really good and I respect that. Maybe coming from a rocky family background who argues incessantly have something to do with me not enjoying this. After all, reading is an escapism to me and this reflects too much reality.

A very particular novel in terms of danmei writing, different. A realistic love like few others find and full of life, disputes, experiences, affection.

I don't know how else to describe this novel. In some parts it is monotonous, but if you look closely it is not, everything has small details that delve deeper into the personality of the characters and their story.

I just finished reading the novel so my feelings are full but I have nothing but admiration. If I had to say something about this novel it would be that it is definitely not the best, It doesn't even have the best writing but it has something that catches you and involves you. It's not cheesy or full of fluff but it has those moments that make you think how beautiful her love is. They almost never express their love in words but they do in actions. It is not tragic but it has a certain anguish, sometimes it is discreet so much that it is not felt but I felt overwhelmed in a part for no reason, since clearly the writing was not heavy on sadness but I still couldn't stand it since the protagonist never describes those feelings you just notice it, you feel it.

... more>> At first I thought there was some difference in their feelings, later I realized how much that changed, or how much I began to notice that in fact there wasn't.

It is incredible how the author made me reflect on life, dreams, time, and the stubbornness of a person to remain firm in what they choose. It is certainly a realistic novel, but it has a certain invisible romanticism in the way it is written.

Simply a wonderful novel that may or may not leave you with a strong impression but is ultimately worth reading.

rating: 4.6 but 5 considering not many people read it. <<less

This is a really good story, the characters are decently mature and they understand each other very much. Story is mainly set with the characters in a rough patch of their relationship and how they navigate it, with flashbacks of their past/ how they got together etc. Good writing style, pacing and setting. It's quite light but I wouldn't call it fluff. The flashbacks are done tastefully and not excessive.

Now this. This is a masterpiece.

Love. Ideals. Growth. Conflict. Companionship.

I can only say I cried a lot. A lot. I am genuinely really s*upid. I should've checked who the author was before reading, I can only bite my ass in sorrow at the unexpected bitter-sweet treat.

... more>> This novel isn't just about Jiang Mo and Shen Zhaowen's conflict, their love and their relationship but also about a tasteful philosophy, a dream and the sunlight we crave to hold.

A story about one who needs way too much security X someone who isn't willing to provide it. The catch is- both know this. And they try to work hard to solve this issue. Which is what makes this work so brilliant.

This is NOT a book for everyone. It's not sweet and it's not even romantic. It's real, raw and filled with pain. I think those who've fallen deep, down and bad in love can understand this.

Why? Because falling deep in love isn't just about feeling jealous, wanting to possess and feeling desire toward someone. Many many many stories simply stop at this portrayal. But love is also about sacrifice, obligations, accommodation, understanding and compromise. Unless one had truly experienced all these, it's hard to really put yourself into either position.

For me, I am very much like Zhaowen while my darling, though not quite like Jiang Mo, is very mystical in that way. It was that one day where when we were discussing about ourselves, the topic of fate popped up- of course not from me. Do I believe in fate? Sadly, no. Does my darling do? Perhaps. It was that day my contact name was changed to "缘份' "We are fated. That's how I'll describe us." What a beautiful coincidence haha. I only thought it was pretty cute. My darlings contact name is still "老婆" haha, I'm pretty basic.. I want to address one review here that said their relationship is toxic and unhealthy and can't last long. That's what I'd call a bias. A narrow-minded view and frankly just obtuse.

You've completely. utterly missed the message the novel was trying to portray. Love can't be explained, many things are unfathomable don't have corporeal form and are simply inexplainable. And so that is life, and that is motive, for what do we look at the sky for and what do we smell our wine for, each of these thoughts come swimming in our bloodstreams, melding into our bones and becoming one with our flesh. Like our Zhaowen said, "Love and death, both happen at an instant." You can't control nor understand this mind within you, it's truly mystical and one day it might grow wings and fly off haha. Either way, when one's heart is willing, flesh can be discarded.

When two individuals truly wish to meld into each other, but also keep their own separate forms, it's a dance that's filled with discovery and depth. One doesn't need compatibility to start a spark in the same way one may look back and gaze into the same eyes that filled their hearts with a little more blood. Isn't it romantic? Love dictates who is to be together, not us not them.

This is a literary masterpiece, a gem that I think you'd be s*upid to miss.

P.S- I'd die to meet the lead singer of Queen and Liszt. <<less

Extremely toxic and codependent but it feels accurate to both characters. Instead of a wildly unhealthy relationship presented as true love, it is instead a character portrait of two very mentally ill people living for each other; allowing the audience to cast judgment on the quality of the relationship. Still very enjoyable, but the middle had me yelling for them to break up or work on their issues. The ending was sweet and it felt natural. Would recommend, if only because it makes you think.

I love it. I've had doubts in the beginning on how they would establish a strong foundation for their relationship but unexpectedly, they're good at finding peace and solemn within each other. I believe their contrasting personality is what's making them fit and adorable as a couple. They knew each other so well and are best suited together.

This novel is just like one of ML’s movies—poignant, touching. Like experiencing the whole thing yourself, as if you are part of their world.

Just a bit of warning: both leads have significant differences, differences that will make you think if their love is worth fighting for. But they do, and the process is intriguing and realistic, at the same time.

Months may have passed since I last read this novel, but it still lingers like wine on my tongue.

Drink Drank Drunk is a novel set in a modern setting. It's a very short story, with only 50 main chapters (and 4 extras).

This novel has a more poetic writing style and its reading is very fluid, focusing mainly on the emotions and feelings of the main characters.

It has two protagonists, Shen Zhaowen and Jiang Mo, the two main couple in the story, and they are completely different people.

Jiang Mo is a person focused on the world of art, he likes the idea of having freedom and sees everything in... more>> a more philosophical and artistic way. He is always focused on new artistic projects and is a more laid-back person, having fun at any opportunity. The main characteristic of his character is that he is completely addicted to alcohol, drinking on every possible occasion.

Shen Zhaowen is his complete opposite. He is more serious and reserved, doesn't open up much to others, and is very dedicated and competitive.

One of the character's characteristics is his need for control, hating when things don't go as expected and doing everything to win and be in control of situations, not being... Not at all willing to lose. Unlike Jiang Mo, Shen Zhaowen hates alcohol, can't understand the other's addiction, and never drinks.

Their story is very complicated; the novel doesn't focus on their romance but rather on how complicated their relationship is, focusing more on fights and arguments.

The story shows how love is something unpredictable, something indefinable and complex.

And most importantly, the novel talks a lot about alcoholic beverages and how they affected the lives of the two protagonists in very different ways.

The novel is very enjoyable to read, and has many good quotes.

It also has s*xual content, but not in a very explicit way, but apart from that there are no other triggers besides excessive alcohol consumption.

It's the first novel I've read that focuses only on the main characters and no other plot, and I was very satisfied reading it, as it's not boring but very interesting. <<less

I have never read a story (at least not a danmei) that would develop from an already established relationship. At first this made me a little hesitant because I thought the story would focus too much on the relationship's problems and that it would be something like a forced emotional dependence between the characters where there was no salvation for them anymore, but no!

I really liked the way the author decided to work with her characters. The flashbacks really helped us to understand their personalities. Another thing that I really... more>> liked was that at no point does the author try to point out who's right and who's wrong in the relationship. I feel like this is something about learn how to respect other's subjectivity because that's precisely what makes them who they are (and the reason why they feel in love in the first place).

I think this was one of the best (not so sappy) romance I've read this year!!! <<less

Is it a healthy relationship? Not really, but at the end of the novel, I just feel like they are meant to be.

It's a story about their growth, dreams, ambitions, the sadness and all the conflicts they went through.

At the end of all, it feels like their love for each other will really exist, till death do them apart.

this danmei was pretty great. It’s been a while since I've read anything slice of life related, and I felt with all the other danmei I was in the middle of, I needed a change and im so glad it was this one that found me. I read the entirety in less than a week, any free time I could find I would be reading this.

i think it’s hard to root for a couple like shen zhaowen and jiang mo, at least, I thought this at first and sometimes throughout... more>> the novel. But towards the end, I just love how the author makes you have your own oh, oh. Moment with them. That they’re fated, they’re in love, they’re the only person for each other, and I think it’s beautiful to have been apart of their journey.

they’re a complicated couple, but they work in their own way, and it’s nice to read about and I hope in their own little universe they continue to be happy, even if they argue all the time. Love u drink, drank, drunk ✿ <<less
