The only one who ever reached out to him had died—

Even though Jiho had used up all his guiding energy for him.

‘If I’d stayed by his side from the start, maybe things would’ve turned out differently…’

Drowning in regret and self-loathing, Jiho collapsed.

When he finally came to, he found himself standing in the middle of the hallway of the illegal guiding facility where he had been confined until three years ago.

“Wh-what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”

And at the end of the hallway—he was there.

Baek Dojin, wearing the same tight-fitting combat uniform as he had that day three years ago.

‘Baek Dojin died. I must be dreaming.’

Maybe this was the last time he would ever see Baek Dojin in a dream.

So Jiho clung to him desperately.

The warmth of the hand patting his shoulder was so comforting that Jiho wished he’d never wake up from the dream.

“Mm… huh…?”

But something felt off.

“I won’t do anything you don’t like. So don’t be afraid.”

Why… why wasn’t he waking up from the dream?

So, not sure why it has so many 1 star ratings. It's honestly not that bad.

So first I'd like to address the s*xual ab*se tag. This does not occur between the MC and ML. Contrary to that, ML is actually the one who saves MC from his situation.

The ML is a 100% green flag for sure. He is very patient, kind, understanding and protective towards the MC. Maybe even overly so since he treats 20 (23) year old MC as a child. In terms of guiding, ML tries to refuse... more>> MC, and when that doesn't work he tries to set boundaries and take things extremely slow. MC doesn't understand his careful considerations and, after some misguided advice from some teammates, is forcing ML to be guided.

In this novel I'd say the MC is a bit naive and childish, but also world weary. He's been ab*sed since he was a child by the ppl who were supposed to care for him and by his "customers". He is not naive to s*x but rather to social cues in general since he was isolated growing up. I can't wait to see his character development into someone stronger (mentally and physically) ! <<less

There's too much infantalizing of the MC for me, so I'm discontinuing.

The MC is physically weak, can't talk, gets carried everywhere, has his back patted to send him to sleep every day, gets dressed and washed by the ML, fed cookies and sweets, constantly gets described as looking underaged. 😒 But he's hypersexualized because of a lifetime of ab*se, and somehow that ab*se never causes actual issues with him other than not talking and an aversion to biting (which, like 99.99% of people in real life do not actually like... more>> being bit as far as I've ever known—yeah, I've actually asked my friends because biting is so prevalent in romance books and I was so confused 😂 so this not something I'd consider a side effect of trauma so much as just being normal).

I think the lack of real consequences is another thing that made me dissatisfied. Things happen too easily, so the tension is low. I ended up being a bit bored during action scenes because of it. Also, there's way too much thinking happening during moments where a split second is all somebody would have to react to a situation.

Overall, it's a light, quick read with shallow characters and a simple plot. This is probably better for somebody new to Guideverse because the premise is basic and overdone. The smut happens early-ish (c50 maybe?) and without a lot of relationship development. <<less

To that dear commenter who literally hate on this novel. It is a better choice that you didnt continue because you should go and read some psychology books instead.

Now comes my feelings about it.

Knowing all the things MC went through, I would cherish him the same way our ML did.

He is weak. Because of malnourishement. What do you think 10+ years of ab*se will do to someones body? Not being fed properly, always be*ten, dr*gged and etcetc. So many horrible things happened to MC. How can you complain about it?... more>> He looks underaged for that exact reason too... pls dont talk about something you cant put a finger on. Seriously.

Dont consider his aversion to biting a trauma response??? Pls I have zero problems with biting my partner or them biting me. But I cant even imagine what MC had to go through for him to have that trauma.

He doesnt speak and it was explained why he cant/wont. Totally understandable.

Yes. I wrote this comment purely because I got extremely mad after reading that comment and then reading this novel. Because whatever they said is so wrong in my eyes that I cant stay quiet.

Enjoy the story, the MC and ML are sweet. I will reread it in the future for sure. <<less

First of all, this is a regression story. And half way through the story, several people including the ML found out about the regression. So it is pretty nice that the MC doesn't have to carry the burden alone.

Along the story, Jiho is improving both physically and mentally. The user who mentioned Jiho being infantalised and all those extreme babying stuff is probably reading with their nose lol babying did happen, but not in a bad way like that user mentioned. And, Jiho did have trauma from the long term... more>> s*xual ab*se. But people need to remember, different people have different reaction and affect from trauma.

All in all, don't be afraid to read this from one bad comment and just give it a try. This is a cute story with some weight on it. So far I am loving it. <<less

Bogwing's review nails a lot of the things I felt reading this book so read their review too. My rating is different though. I agree with some people that the plot is very basic and not very special, I would say the plot is 3 stars. I really like the character voices and the way all the side characters feel very distinct, though, and I feel like the way the regression is handled was quite unique, so I increased to 4 stars for that reason!

Now, RE: complaints in other reviews.... more>> A lot of the complaints people have (such as: everything happening because the ML leaves the MC, the way the ML treats the MC, etc) are because of the trauma both characters have. I think the author is aware of this based on both characters having counseling and constantly trying to make decisions based on their understanding of each other's experiences. But because the MC's trauma is so obvious, a lot of readers seem to overlook the ML's situation.

Of course it can be frustrating as a reader, but all his decisions are based on the things the MC has experienced in all their lives. Does it lead to him being over protective and sometimes making poor judgments? Definitely! That's part of what happens with trauma. Trauma can ruin your ability to judge situations and can impact relationships to a high degree. The ML in particular is a man with a heavy sense of responsibility even before he's essentially tasked with saving the world. He clearly feels like he has to take on everything alone and protect the MC as much as possible (especially in contrast to the ways he felt like he failed the MC in the past lives). You don't have to like this type of character or the story being told, but I personally think the author did a good job showing how much their experiences impacted their thinking processes and decision making.

Now, in fairness, aside from all of that, the book definitely has a 24/7 daddy/baby dynamic, which is not for everyone. 😭😂 I absolutely do not recommend reading this if that's going to be a problem for you. And there were parts of the book where even I was like, the MC is a little too much of a crybaby to a cartoonish degree. Some people won't mind this and other people will hate it—if you want characters who are equally badass and can fight, definitely go elsewhere.

But if you like the dynamic this book gives, and you want a fun, casual, and pretty quick read, this is a book for you! I enjoyed myself and I think plenty of other people will too. <<less

I was a bit put off due to some other reviews, but I'm glad I didn't let that keep me from reading this! I have some things to say RE: the age gap/babying the MC/MC's initial disabilities, but first!

This is a charming novel that tells a story of a couple whose love for one another transcends a single life. There's some time/regression aspects, and both of them learn and grow in the life this story focuses on due to regaining memories from those former lives. I went in expecting a... more>> typical hunter or guideverse story with either a heavy focus on RPG-like elements of monster battles in dungeons or smut because guiding. There's none of the former, and while there is some of the latter, it isn't instant and doesn't dominate the story. No, the book focuses on the plot (the impending end of the world in the Final Dungeon) and how things have changed versus what the characters knew and also, and more interesting imo, the growth and change the characters go through as people and a couple. It was a really warm, sweet book and I'm very satisfied with the ending. The extras had me laughing and also teary eyed and I'll miss these two!

Now, regarding the supposed infantilization of the MC: the ML does view him as someone younger/weaker/in need of protecting and for very good reasons. Which I will put behind a spoiler because, well, they're a spoiler!

Spoiler

The MC was in an orphanage until he was 8 when he was bought by an illegal guiding facility. He was heavily ab*sed from his abandonment at birth until he's rescued from the facility. Because he was kept like that, he didn't go to school or live a normal life. He has no idea how to use a phone, how to cook even an egg, or how to order food at a cafe. He has 0 lifeskills, and the ML is determined to help him learn some! His initial babying of him is due to the MC's extremely fragile mental/physical state; if he was treated poorly then how is he to recover? The MC *needs* help and the ML provides it. And while ML notices he's initially attracted to MC, he takes 0 action on that.

There's a 14 year (technically 11 due to time travel) age gap between them when they meet at the start of the novel. The ML is like 'ew gross he's a child' when considering his own attraction to the MC, and refuses to allow himself to do more than holding hands for guiding. This frustrates the MC who feels like he *is* grown/an adult. Having been personally on both sides of this IRL (thinking I'm sooo mature and adult in my early 20's and trying to date a person in their mid 30's to being in my mid 30's and being like 'that's a child' when a 20 yr old hits on me), I think the author handled it well. MC is mad because he's not a child (then proceeds to burn breakfast and use sugar instead of salt on a fried egg, okay baby) and ML is frustrated because he feels like there's a power imbalance and wants MC to be able to make his own informed, consensually decision.

They only become intimate initially because of MC pursuing ML, and ML realizing that part of MC maturing means he has to be allowed to make his own choices—good or bad. The whole book focuses on what our choices mean and how they can impact us and others, so I think that was a very important plot detail and not just uwu he's a sexy baby nonsense. In some of the extras the ML mourns the fact that MC has grown up so much but not like aw he's not my wittle guy anymore but in a 'my choices meant he *had* to mature even more than necessary and I regret that I put him in that situation' way. (ML enters a long coma and MC is on his own and has to take care of not only himself but feels like he has to also take care of ML at the hospital too.)

But ML also is SO proud of his partner in how he's grown and matured and become such a wonderful person. He loves MC so much (and that love is returned) and after everything they went through to be together, he's so happy to see MC go from scared, unable to speak due to trauma tiny malnourished victim to articulate, kind, reliable, clever, and healthy young man. It's really very touching!

Oh and his muteness does go away, and rather quickly! It's due to trauma, not a physical disability and he goes to therapy to address it! Lots of people are going to therapy for lots of mental health woes in this novel and it's very positive towards getting mental health help if you need it! Which I thought was a nice touch!

[collapse]

If you don't want to read that spoiler box (and I don't blame you!) then just know that the "infantilization" of MC stems from plot points and the whole book focuses on growth, good or bad, and how important it is for people to be allowed to make their own choices—and how those choices can impact others. MC is not an uwu sexy baby trope, don't worry.

Now another spoiler to answer three major questions I always want to know in regards to a novel!

Is it a HE or BE? Is there SA/noncon? Is there infidelity?

Spoiler

HE; there's mentions of it in the past with the MC in his past life but nothing graphic or ever between the CP; nope! It's a 1v1 no cheating!

A really satisfying read! Although a bit cliche, tis still a 5-star read for me.

The MC might start off seemingly weak, but he's actually stubborn and determined. He couldve been a more pitiable character with his background ... more>>
Spoiler

Also, we just sort of never talked about the first life MC who offed hinself

[collapse]
but I was suprised at how strong-willed he actually was. I guess it was a very conscious decision to gloss over the tragic parts of his life/ves and focus on healing and fighting for the current life.

ML felt like a gentle, reliable presence the entire story even towards the last battle where odds were stacked against them.
Spoiler

The first life reveal was so good! I wish we saw more of that dynamic. He's a bit rough on the edges, but he remained a kind, steady, and grounding presence for the MC.

[collapse]

I really felt their relationship work -- ML being careful with MC, and MC clinging to the ML -- I really didn't think I would enjoy the dynamic, but the action plot in the background may have complemented it.

Kinda refreshing how not dumb the MC and ML were.

The author tried to flesh out the side characters, which is a plus in my books.

The plot is overall okay, nothing too dumb happened to make it make sense. Nothing too surprising happened, but I enjoyed the obvious twist in the story. Like, even if it were obvious that there was a

So to start off, the translation was great and really carried across very nuanced tones- which it's genuinely been a while for me to see when reading a Knovel.

That's being said, god this novel is just boring. And unfortunately, it didn't start out that way...

At the beginning, the regression was impactful; the situation, the timing, ALL of it added up to really suck you into the story.

... more>> So did the "chasing" arc that came immediately after, the slow burn, the surprises AND the struggles.

But after that? After they start as a proper pair Guide & Esper?

Well honestly, it just starts to all fall flat. Repetitive scenarios, repeating arguments. The ML being a stubborn ignoramus, the MC desperately trying to understand...

It really started to tire me out.

As one comment on the translation site put it;

Spoiler

Every single regression has happened because Dojin couldn't control his emotions/be less stubborn.

...

Things keep going wrong when they are separated! I don't know why he's not getting that :/

[collapse]

It was so formulaic that you could see it coming; Dojin leaves Jiho alone for xyz reason (always caused by his decision, and Jiho not exactly agreeing) *BAM* something bad happens. It was literally "guaranteed" to happen the second you knew they would be apart.

And then as I came to the tail end of the novel, literally everything I predicted turned out to come true. And boyhowdy is that just annoying.

It doesn't make me feel good, it was just *that f*cking obvious* what was going to happen.

As a result, I decided to sit for a bit before writing a review (because I didn't want to 4 star it and then just say- damn this shits boring but it's not bad) and actually came up with a few things, I realised, bothered me alot about this novel. Hence why it's now a 3 star review.

  1. I realised we know sweet FA about Jiho. No seriously, he's the 'main character' but we know far more about the ML than anyone else (why are Korean authors allergic to having Top MCs? Literally the ML might as well be the MC seeing as we get his perspective too, just as much as Jihos).
  2. Jiho doesn't feel like an MC, he feels like an emotional placeholder. You want to play daddy/baby with the ML? Dw, you can essentially just self-insert as Jiho.
  3. The story isn't actually that fleshed out, the romance is. Like, it's subtle. But I realised, we don't know much about the World at all outside of Korea- and even then we don't know much about this Korea in particular.
  4. Wdym the World rests squarely on Dojin's shoulders? You're telling me he's the only multi-esper in the whole world? Really? There's other S classes, so what makes them S class?
  5. Why tf does Dojin have multiple Esper powers? There's literally no explanation for it, not even like background whispering rumours. That's just weird.
  6. Why can Jiho modulate his guiding frequency? Bare in mind, he was always able to do it! Are we sure he wasn't messed with in genetic experiments when he was a child, like the Monsters were? (No spoilers bcs literally there's nothing about Jiho info wise and this never gets brought up again bar *two* conversations with different team members).
  7. The author clearly has a thing for Daddy/Bear tops, and whilst I think it's okay. The other reviews feeling uncomfortable with it are valid. Jiho repeatedly expresses he doesn't like being treated like a child... Something the ML really does alot. (This is played off as Esper protectiveness Vs Guides, but you literally *do not* see another Pair do anything similar). And whilst initially it wasn't a kink thing (helping Jiho rehabilitate/he's only 20 in his eyes), by the end of the novel it's hard not to see the ML viewing it that way, due to the inner monologue we are privy to.
  8. Every unpaired Esper is painted as aggressive, SA & r*pe specialists, who don't give a f*ck about guides. But then the author says the Korean Guides are treated almost the best in the World... Hey author-nim, did you read your own writing? No tf they aren't, your Korean Espers apparently regularly ab*se and assault them in cages- sorry I mean "guiding rooms they aren't allowed to leave without permission".
  9. Everything is solved far too easily; the 'villains' are borderline comically dealt with, and the only major angst was Dojin himself repeatedly causing problems.
  10. Dojin suddenly becomes 14 years older than the MC rather than just 12 (did the author miscount the years before regression?) And even after realising Jiho is mentally coming up to his 30s (including the regression he'd be like 28+), still treats him like a 15 year old.
