When Prosperity Fades, All She Seeks Is a Lifetime of Serenity, Free from the Ties of Emotion.

Awakening from a hazy dream, she finds that the fleeting years of vanity have unsettled her heart. As the splendor fades, she seeks a life of serenity, leaving behind the burdens of sentiment.

Behind the towering walls of the grand mansion, the surface appears calm and undisturbed, yet beneath the still waters, treacherous currents surge.

In her past life, Gu Jinchao placed her trust in those bound to her by blood, only to suffer devastating consequences—her mother passed away prematurely, her younger brother was cast out, and her family was torn apart.

But who would have thought that upon awakening from a dream, she would find herself returned to her youthful years?

Now, reborn in this lifetime, the entanglements of love and hatred that once consumed her have long faded into nothingness.

She treads cautiously, wishing only for her mother’s longevity, her brother’s well-being, and a peaceful, stable life.

Yet fate is relentless—hatred has dissipated, but love resurfaces.

When the dust finally settles, where will her heart truly belong?

I think there's quite a lot to unpack here but if you're in a hurry, this story is about a run of the mill character who was a cruel you-know-what in her past life and was trying to be less of one in the next life.

That being said, honestly the only reason I even read this was to see if I could because this is something that's not enjoyable at all. If there's one thing I appreciated, it was the realistic aspect of the MC. Reborn MCs remember so freaking... more>> much! Like, I can't remember what I had for lunch last week. What do you mean you know who did what at what time/date when you were a baby?

Anyway. While I appreciate the consideration, it was taken too literally. There was nothing special about our MC. She was completely useless. And the constant misogynistic undertones, with the tacit approval of the MC, was making me mad. If I wanted a complete realistic portrayal, I would have been looking for nonfiction books. Our MC had zero personality. I'm almost convinced that this had a new trope called "beauty without brains". I actually judge the male characters that liked her. I was praying for some saving grace to at least add something to her. I mean, a little fire in her character would be nice.

The writing was good though. I have to give it that. Maybe older generations would like this one. If you want to read it, I recommend lowering your expectations as much as possible. <<less

I enjoyed the story but as others have said, it's not one that I would get satisfaction from re-reading.

I really feel bad for the women in those times. If you're poor, you get sold for food, money or favours. The girls can end up being in brothels, trained "thin horses", concubines, servants, etc.

Even concubine-born daughters may not be better than legitimate daughters as it depends on the mother-in-law. If you can't get pregnant or birth a daughter, it is your duty was the wife to find a concubine for your... more>> husband! One of the side, side characters have to serve the husband as well as the mother which entails standing behind her or by her side, picking up dishes because lo and behold the mother cannot reach that far with her own chopsticks!

In the reborn life, the FL's family isn't that great. Her father and many other men in the story just turn a blind eye.
Spoiler

The Song lady decides to marry in as a concubine despite being a legit daughter. I can see that it's part of survival, plotting and scheming for herself and her daughter so their ends can be justified since they caused the mother's death and basically the downfall of the brother.

[collapse]

Concubines' lives

Spoiler

They birth children and the children cannot acknowledge them as the birth mothers and just call them aunts. It was said to see that in 3rd master's home, the concubines are basically housed in a tower far away without guests, entertainment and cannot even see their children. They are basically left to rot away their lives. Even the FL brings in the Luo/Lu girl who is just 16 and after the dad marries a second wife, she basically is left out of the story. Another one is the 2nd master who brings back a skinny horse with a child. She "dies" off and the child is brought up by the grandmother and poor kid wants to learn from the FL on how to be liked by people. He sees it but doesn't understand it. The kids are so innocent and it's just depressing.

[collapse]

As I'm reflecting and remembering the details, I wonder why I finished it. I guess that I want some sort of redemption for the FL. She does take good care of the maids around her but she, like the ML can be ruthless. I guess during those times, you do have to be ruthless in addition to being able to scheme and manipulate. <<less

This is hands-on one of the best ancient romance I've read! It's so good I've read the MTL version twice!

I'm baffled at the one-star, it absolutely does not deserve it!

This novel is centered around a reborn heroine Gu Jinchao who made the wrong choices in her past life and now is being given a second chance. It's not your traditional rebirth story with lots of face slapping and retribution but more about learning from your mistakes and maturing after a tragic previous life.

The main couple is one of the best... more>> I've encountered, a beautiful and meaningful love story that stays with you.

All in all, it's a one-of-kind novel that you will love if you're a fan of slow paced, detailed ancient romances with complex characters and intricate relationships like "Legend of Concubine Daughter Minglan", "Love Like The Galaxy" or "Concubine Raiders". <<less

Okay, the story itself is well-planned and detailedly-written. If you like ancient settings with plenty of characters, inner courtyard schemings, and a dash of politics—this may be for you.

What you need to know:

As with other cnovels with hundreds of chapters, the events unfold slowly and the ML doesn't appear until much, much later. The build up shouldn't be a problem if you like the ML and his romance with the FL.

... more>> What I didn't like:

However, I wasn't swept away with the OTP. The ML is the quiet, reserved, but deeply jealous type. I found him bland and predictable especially when compared to the 2nd/3rd ML,

Ye Xian.

He also barely confides in the FL and literally and figuratively shelters her like glass. I guess this is a natural relationship dynamic since he's a lot older than her and is at the pinnacle of power.

(I can't help comparing this against "Blossom / Jiu Chong Zi" where the ML, Song Mo, treasures Dou Zhao but intellectually respects her and involves her in strategizing. Granted, they met at an earlier stage of life when Song Mo was just about to rise to power.)

I was slightly disturbed too by

two specific mu*ders committed by the OTP. One, plotted by the FL. The other, ordered by the ML. I've read other cnovels with battles and killings involved but the coldness/premeditated aspect here bothers me.

What I did like:

There were two side characters that shined well and could be the leads in their own story. They were the reason I finished this—I needed to know how they ended up.

TL;DR: Because I'm not a fan of the OTP, the first half is more interesting than the second half. But I'm sure this type of story will appeal to others.

Also, the official translations are wonderful. Thank you so much. There's only 50 chapters so far and I had to read machine translations for the rest. But I wouldn't have gotten started without Juju's Translations. <<less

Another novel finished.

Before anything, a big shoutout to the author and translator for all the hard work. I truly appreciate the effort that went into bringing this story to life 🤍

I’d give this novel a solid 4/5.

... more>> I’m usually a big fan of rebirth stories, and while this novel has that element, it isn’t heavily emphasized — which surprisingly worked really well. I can’t even pinpoint exactly why, but it feels like the author handled it very cleverly.

The female lead is my type: smart, but not overly perfect. She has her advantages, yet she often misses the right timing. What surprised me the most is how I reacted to one major plot point — she failed to save her mother. Normally, I really dislike this kind of trope in rebirth novels, but here... I found myself accepting it. Maybe it’s the way the author delivered the emotions that made it feel natural instead of frustrating.

The early part of the story was especially strong. The emotional scenes felt very real and hit me deeply — probably because I could relate, having lost my own mother. I genuinely cried, and it was hard to put the novel down.

However, towards the later part, the focus shifted more to the male lead, especially his political storyline. Because of that, we didn’t get as many impactful moments for the female lead, which was a bit disappointing since I personally prefer stories that center more on her growth.

As for the romance, I was honestly confused for a while about who she would end up with. She had chemistry with multiple characters, which made things interesting. In the end, I was okay with her final choice — they were sweet and loving. However, one thing that bothered me was how the male lead kept a lot of information from her until the very end. He would only share when asked, and even when she gave suggestions, he didn’t always take them. Still, I can’t really nitpick too much because the author managed to justify it well within the story.

Objectively, there are quite a few plot holes and some directions I wouldn’t usually enjoy. But somehow, the author’s storytelling made me overlook those flaws. It’s funny because when I think about it, the novel feels like there’s nothing to nitpick — but when I really reflect, there actually are many. I guess the author did a good job covering the weaknesses so they don’t stand out too much.

Would I reread it?

Maybe — but probably when I run out of new novels to read 😂 <<less

When I read this novel, I don’t like the story and most of the characters in this novel even I don’t really like MC. I skipped a few chapters and subconsciously I have a glimmer of hope for this novel to shine, luckily it shines after more than 100 hundreds chapters, its getting better after around 100’s chapters.

I can’t guessed which one is the ML until he proposed to MC’s family.

if you have nothing to read, just give this novel a chance.

Gu Jin Chao is a spoiled girl who marries the father of her crush, only to end up alone and despised. When given the chance to do life over, she completely ignores her crush and tries to make a way for herself. However, when her first husband makes a reappearance, can Gu Jin Chao stop events from repeating?

This one was a little interesting, in that I love a spoiled wife situation, but I really didn't expect the love interest to be who it ended up being. It also leans more... more>> to the political intrigue, and was relatively fast-paced until the end. The only issue that I had was the age gap, but you're either going to read it or you won't.

If you like Rebirth, He Fell First, and political maneuvers being done by actual adults, then this is for you. <<less
