When student teacher Hirose returns to his alma mater for a few weeks, he notices strange events seem to be revolving around a student, Kaname Takasato. As Hirose soon learns, Takasato was said to have been “spirited away” and then mysteriously reappearing one year later without any memories of where he had been or what had happened to him.

While some students are fascinated with Takasato, others have taken to avoiding him, particularly as rumours emerge that bad things tend to happen to anyone who tries to upset Takasato. As Hirose tries to learn more about Takasato, he soon witnesses firsthand the strange occurrences surrounding Takasato as the consequences grow ever more severe and horrifying.

The author later worked certain events from this novel into the Twelve Kingdoms series. Chronologically this novel takes place after the fourth Twelve Kingdoms book, Skies of Dawn (風の万里 黎明の空; Kaze no Banri, Reimei no Sora) and some events are covered in book six (黄昏の岸 暁の天; Tasogare no Kishi, Akatsuki no Sora).

I can't believe it took me this long to find this novel! Ono-sensei is one of my all time favourite author. So far her novel [and the manga/anime adaption of it] that I have read is truly, truly, scary!

Now, while there is ghost/supernatural theme on her works, the scariest things is still, of course, the human hearts. And Ono-sensei really have a way with word to describe this scary part.

I means, ... more>>
Spoiler

Takasato is, indeed have terrifying ability but seriously, it is not his fault! Yet everyone seems to just hell bent on pushing the blame on him! What the heck, they even push him from the window, in fact if not for his supernatural ability this novel probably already ended from prologue due to the fact that the grandma making a kid, standing outside in February while it is snowing and getting dark! As soon as I read the prologue I already want to beat that grandma. Then I read the last line about the pale white arm and I was like 'Yep, here comes the horror'
Alright, let's stop with the rant and start being serious.

So, the title is misleading. Takasato isn't a Demon Child. In fact he is, possibly, the purest soul out of everywhere in the story. Now, I am not saying everyone here is bad. No. That is the things. I can't hate some character here even if they do something s*upid, for example, Iwaki. Dude, I get it, you are a teenager. You are hot blooded. Someone is rumoured to be cursed so you decided to slap that guy to prove he isn't. But seriously, your action are what starting the snowball effect!

For the others though, well, sorry Sakata, but you should know better.

So yeah, long story short : You have a kid that got kamikakushi aka 'hidden by God' and then when the kid come back, he isn't exactly the same anymore.

Sounds like a familiar plot huh?

Now, this is where Ono-sensei brilliance coming. She makes a believable story with supernatural element on it. What if, people's fear are ruling their mind? Seriously though, again, if Takasato didn't have real supernatural ability, this novel will be a bullying novel where poor misunderstood teenager got throw out from his home after he ended up in hospital because his classmate thought he cursed someone because they slap him in order to prove that he is just a normal ordinary person. And after a kind teacher took him in, a malicious person leaked to the media about 'the curse' that he even ended up in newspaper and TV station and you know how reporter are, nasty fellow.

My blood is boiling when I read 'How could you curse your parents to death' as the reporter taking a candid picture. WTF.

[collapse]

So yeah, Ono-sensei, thank you for writing a scary novel that showing that in the end, even the so-called Demon Child is actually less scarier than human being. <<less
