It was just another day in the monotonous grind. At his father’s request, Park Wan went to water someone else’s garden as usual. The sun beating down on the crown of his head was intensely hot, and the scorching heat made his throat feel like it was burning. But something was strange. A sprinkler, which had never worked before, peeked out from the grass and spouted water. His school uniform was soaked to the point of being see-through, and he couldn’t return to school in this state. And so, Park Wan stepped inside the enormous mansion, its luxurious maw wide open. And around his neck, a glittering shackle was fastened.

DMH is a genuinely toxic BL, and what makes it work is that it handles familiar tropes in a grounded, psychologically consistent way. I would not recommend the manhwa, though. The adaptation flattens the nuance and reduces everything to a generic “toxic BL aesthetic” that misses the novel's tone entirely. It takes something unsettling and thoughtful and turns it into something loud and surface-level.

On paper, it’s a classic setup: poor, recessive Omega bottom + wealthy, dominant Alpha. But it’s not the usual “tragic backstory + desperate pursuit” formula. MHJ (ML)... more>> doesn’t chase Wan (MC). He’s not obsessed from the start. Their relationship begins when Wan needs a guardian to come to school after he gets in a fight, and MHJ sends his secretary, Chief Kim. From there, MHJ quietly and inevitably takes over Wan’s life. He collars him. He absorbs him into his routine. There’s no breakup arc, no groveling, no redemption. It reads disturbingly close to how a real, uneven power dynamic would unfold.

The s*xual pacing is also done well. MHJ doesn’t immediately jump into s*x. He chips away at boundaries, slowly, until Wan eventually offers himself as leverage. It’s wrong, but the pacing makes it believable, not melodramatic.

MHJ works because he’s awful in a consistent, unembellished way. He’s not “evil for effect.” He’s entitled because he believes he is. Even his marriage proposal is basically, “I need a long-term s*xual partner, I want it to be you.” His punishments aren’t dramatic set pieces; they match his worldview. He doesn’t agonize, doesn’t apologize, doesn’t self-narrate. He just is. The author maintains this characterization throughout.

Wan isn’t as sharply drawn, but he’s still compelling. His slow resignation is written with a lot of emotional clarity. You genuinely feel how he becomes the “ideal omega” MHJ always wanted, not out of love, but because resistance becomes exhausting and costly. His lapses into rebellion, panic, and fear feel real. You root for him even when you know MHJ is going to punish him for it... and the novel never forces some dramatic escape arc. When Wan does run, he regrets it immediately—because by that point, his life has already reshaped itself around MHJ.

So yes, it’s toxic. But it’s toxic with internal logic, not posturing. It doesn’t try to sanitize or glamorize what’s happening. <<less

Ok hear me out... its actually pretty good ngl

Someone said that there is no redemption or wife chasing arc and they are somewhat right since its not the conventional wife chase arc lol

TW: SPOILERS AHEAD

Despite the ab*se Park wan suffered under Ml's reign, I feel like its a very precarious situation. Evidently ML has always been very abusive as u can see in the start of the novel, and u might even curse him in ur mind calling him a lowly bastard but its funny... I dont know how I... more>> started rooting for the both of them as soon as I went to chapter 99 and it is so unbelievable considering more than half of the novel is just plain ab*se.

You might even think this might have Gang*** but thats not true... usually in korean novels I have noticed this trend about MC getting punished by ML into doing stuff with other people as a punishment, which I personally find very f*cking distasteful.

MC is a recessive omega and they are kinda similar to betas since there is a low pheromone count on their body and the ML is a dominant alpha so like- when MC does get pregnant it ends up with a miscarriage.

In a very subtle way you will start seeing changes in the Ml's tone... like initially he was extremely ruthless and had no consicience whatsoever. But then during the later half of the story you might not even notice but there is such an immense difference from how they first started out.

If I can give anything as a comfort about this story, it is that the ML has always had the MC and has been loyal when they had somewhat committed to each other. During the confession scene in another chapter MC asks ML directly that why would he propose a marriage. ML says- "Thats because you have a hole I like to f*ck*

A very crude way of putting it, and MC asks if ML loves him. ML denies it. When ML asks the same question- MC says smth like "You? Forget it." And you can see ML is highly affected by it.

I cant blame MC for not liking that piece of absolute inhumane garbage in the first half. Things drastically change after the miscarriage. For the first time ML lets MC go and its upto MC whether he will accept ML back or not. I mean its obvious what he will choose, since all his life he has been living under ML so that level of dependency is kinda expected...

This is not a regular love story quite obviously. In fact during the scene when ML is waiting for MC to tell him whether he will take him back or not- MC says, "I thought about what you said, and it seems our bodies are compatible, so even if you dont love me we can still marry."

Then ML says this- "Love? I define what love is." I mean uptill here u pretty much can gauge ML is head over heels for MC and just loves him alot. His personality has a 360 degree change but alot of his old personality remains. You cant really change a persons nature that easily... yes you can surpress it because you havent been given that environment and have been living with someone you care about more than your usual self. In mls case I think it is easy to understand why he is the way he is. We could argue about nature and nurture, but it seems his nature has been like this from the start, his nurturing just made him a whole lot shittier. So I guess both are to blame.

I just want you all to objectively understand from the Ml's perspective. You dont need to pity him or feel sorry for him at all, but understand him... the author has done such a great job subtly changing mls personality and making him milder... there are lots of books like these but this one is especially nicely done.

There's a manhwa! (Beware it's very toned down. Still a good ref for how each chara looks)

It's the type that gets better as you read. It's also the type where drama gets worse as you read. Author was able to push each characters to their worst.

Very dark cinderella-esque, if you're looking for that type of genre.

  • ML is that rich manipulative guy who grew up with skewed mentality thinking everything he do is right. Narcissistic in short
  • MC is the typical pitiful poor protagonist, that was wisked away by the toxic ml
There's a lot of deus ex machina moments but I don't mind. Some scenes are still unpredictable

Spoiler

like the part where the supposed changed man hs bully wasn't actually a changed man. I regret rooting for a friendship

[collapse]

I love the chara development. The change is subtle but it's there. Honestly you can't change a person overnight, least they can do is meet halfway and author wrote it perfectly.

Spoiler

main chara dev imo is when ML finally literally broke the chain he placed on MC. Took him gazillion years, but I like that symbolism. He is still same self centered guy but he atleast is trying his best to compromise. (The bar is low in darkgenres iykyk). Pity we didn't see him cry, but his reaction is pretty much full of regret

[collapse]

I always like how MC is written so his character is peaked to me since day 1. He never stopped fighting back. And I respect his decisions, he has realistic pov

Spoiler

He finally broke down big time after he got pregnant. And he never really mentally recovered until he was able to actually leave. Baby needs his safe space. That whole angtsy part was delivered satisfyingly

[collapse]

This got me reading till dawn and still readin after I woke up. The last chapters of mtl was kinda a headache but I'm glad there's an ongoing translation.

And we can't forget our goat Chief Kim. He's been tolerating our ML's bullsh*t since god knows when, but he has his loyalties and I respect him for that. He is pretty much what makes the ML op <<less

This is one of the best Korean the authors I know. The whole novel is really well written, everything is so well explained, the characters are well characterized. I really respect this author for his immense talent. I just have to say that I saw an episode of the manhwa of this novel and it was very disappointing and I dropped it and I prefer to just go with the novel.

Spoiler

ML is truly a narcissistic and unlikable character. That poor MC really has no power to move forward in his life. And the crazy ML has trapped him. Even though I saw mc's father killed in the new chapter, I was happy because he was so unworthy that he couldn't support MC and give him a good life and he was just gambling.

What I like about MC is that he doesn't have Stockholm syndrome and doesn't like ml. Please keep it up.

It's strange that as the story went on, I gradually started to like ml😀. This is the talent of the author. This novel is really worth reading.

Fabulously written, every emotion so vividly expressed. The story in itself in essence explores obsession, helplessness and acceptance of ones fate.

if you’re trying to find a story where the ML regrets don’t bother with it.

Spoiler

Till the end ML neither apologies even once nor feels regret, so if you want ML begging for forgiveness after all the cruetly, yeah this is not for you. I actually liked that aspect of the story, it transitions from an uber rich ML experiencing momentary obsession to long lasting one. Yes I could no where feel that ML loves MC even when they got married in the end. Neither did MC ever truly fell in love with the ML but was rather scared of losing ML’s attention and obsession and him abandoning him

[collapse]

Translation was awesome and pretty accurate. Kudos to the translation team. <<less

I won't say that this novel is good, but there are other novels that are worse than this with Seme being a bastard/jerk and crazy.

At first I was a little hesitant to read this one because there was a spoiler in the manhwa saying that Mu Jeonghu didn't get karma/regret, but I just wanted to give him a chance, and it turned out it wasn't that bad even though it wasn't regret but he got his punishment. In fact, I'm a little more satisfied with what Mu Jeonghu has experienced... more>> than Kwon Ido, who always apologizes with a pitiful face, which makes me a bit sick. With how Mu Jeonghu took care of the crazy MC was a satisfaction in itself even though he never apologized or regretted his actions. I also liked the fact that MC until the end had no feelings of Love for him, even though he was dependent on Mu Jeonghu. Because in reality he lived alone after his father left, and will fight alone when he finds out that his father has died. Mu Jeonghu also experiences a little character development at the end of the story. <<less
