It’s been twenty years since “Gates,” disaster zones infested with monsters, and “Newtypes,” a new human race of psychics, appeared.

Each nation has struggled in its own way to reclaim peace. They established the Deschement Center, an international organization that manages Gates worldwide, and appointed high-ranking Newtypes as “Sentinels.”

The strongest Sentinel, without question, is the S-Class Newtype Jae Chaui (在此矣). His name means “I am here,” and like the name implies, he reigns as a timeless, invincible hero and absolute force—never aging, never injured, never fading.

Meanwhile, in the ruined corners of the world, lives Song Morae, an E-Class Guide barely surviving a life as barren as a desert. His everyday existence, filled with contempt and oppression, is poor and pale.

So when the Deschement Center offers him a job—and even claims he has been selected as an S-Class Guide, the new partner of Jae Chaui—it’s almost beyond belief.

“Is that your partner? Just died a moment ago. Time to take on a new one, right?”

From the first day they meet, Jae Chaui shatters Song Morae’s world with force and indifference.

Even physical intimacy feels hollow, and speaking is even harder—their partnership is chaos.

Yet Jae Chaui “likes” Song Morae. Even as he breaks him down, Song Morae remains an incomprehensible mystery. Jae Chaui, despite everything, can’t figure him out.

Morae’s silent mystique defies unraveling.

“Breaking is easy. Fixing isn’t.”

Unless you split open that pretty little head and peek at what’s inside.

Not sure how exactly I'm going to rate this one yet. This story is a melodrama, tragedy, frustrating, make-you-cry-for-the protagonist kind of story.

The ML is presented as a typical obsessive, possessive, unreasonable s*umbag ML who never listens and is also abusive. When the MC is wronged by others and gossiped about the ML doesn't defend him, nor does he seem to consider any kind of distress the MC undergoes to be important. I usually hate his type of character (but I love melodrama, which is why I keep subjecting myself... more>> to them -_-), but later revelations about the ML make the existence of this character archetype actually make sense? It turns out that he's actually a unique s*umbag ML in a way that's interesting.

Like, a lot of other s*umbag male love interests will be "redeemed" at some point in the story, or something happens that makes him become nicer, or maybe other characters are written to be even worse somehow making him look better in comparison or something. Like "ML has a sad backstory that justifies him being a rapist" or "ML realizes that hurting the MC is Actually a Bad Thing", or "yeah the ML is bad but the second male lead is just as bad plus he doesn't actually love the MC he only wants to be with him for clout." Or something.

This doesn't happen with the ML here. You finally get to ML's POV after ch 100? 110? Or so? (Don't remember exactly when) and it's shown what his thoughts/motivations are:

Spoiler

He doesn't even realize that how he's treating the MC is wrong? He's not maliciously trying to subjugate the MC and doesn't even want to hurt him, he just has no normal sense of morality and is just does whatever he wants because he doesn't think there are any issues????? And there's a whole lot more with him and his backstory that changes the context of everything he does but also makes everything make more sense.

[collapse]

MC stays pretty weak and ineffectual, he's used to being in an abusive situation and therefore gives in to ab*se too easily, he doesn't explain things and try to clear up misunderstandings, and he's hated by basically everyone Just Because. All of this can be frustrating. But as time goes on it becomes more and more apparent that it really wouldn't matter if he did try to explain himself or communicate, and that it really doesn't matter what other people think of him. And eventually? All of that ends up not mattering.

But if you, as a reader, are burning with anger from the injustice and want to jump into the story to scream the truth in everyone's faces, know that the MC comes out on top in the end (I guess???) and everyone else is given their just desserts (in a manner of speaking???).

I'm not finished yet so I'm not leaving a rating yet. Might be a 4/5? A 5/5 just for actually being written well? But if you want a good sad, frustrated melodrama cry, this novel is perfect for that so 👌👌👌 <<less

never really written a review on here, so it'll be bad... but so far I really like this! I like our MC and ML, and I'm excited to see how their dynamic changes. I look forward to learning more about MC's past, and I think he is overall a charming character, though I'm also biased because I usually like MCs with his personality. ML is very "does whatever he pleases" but he also dotes on the MC, though we have yet to see if that's because of true care or... more>> because of his possessiveness. translation is great, and I look forward to updates! <<less
