“Falling in love with him was a natural progression. He considered it fate. Fate is like an absolute oracle. Just as mere mortals cannot refuse the message of God, so was Cyrus’s love.”

If you've ever been even remotely curious about exploring the merits of in*est fetish in literature, this is 100% the book to start with. It perfectly encapsulates everything that makes the taboo so appealing and erotic; this novel is absolutely a masterpiece of the taboo erotica genre.

This story follows Cyrus and Cecil, a pair of half-snake half-human brothers... more>> who forged an intense, inseparable bond in the womb that followed them all throughout their life. One day, they witness their fathers having interc**rse, which becomes the spark that ignites something new and unfamiliar in their dynamic. They begin to explore intimacy together, which causes Cyrus's love and obsession towards Cecil to intensify. The novel explores all their complex feelings about their beastly side, about the animalistic nature of their relationship, and all the shame, fear, and guilt Cecil feels about violating human taboos and "betraying" his humanity by being with Cyrus. All three characters have a different relationship with their half-human nature and what it means to them to be a human; since they're only half human, do human rules apply to them?

In*est (obviously), ra*pe (between MC&ML), coercive relationships, manipulation, besti*lity (they have s*x in snake form), exhibitionism, rough/intense s*x, an*l fisting. Cyrus is a massive mega red-flag, just like his father!

Humans are drawn to the taboo, the forbidden. One of the most famous stories across humanity is about the temptation of the forbidden. As the book says, their relationship is forbidden, it is something not even beasts do. Cyrus and Cecil’s love is beastly, yet that’s what makes it so appealing. It is simple, primal, animalistic, and intense. It’s hard not to feel moved by the depth of their feelings, feelings that would be impossible if they didn’t grow up together and share a blood bond. Their love is simply more; beyond any labels we have to quantify or define human relationships.

The translation is absolutely fantastic. The writing is extremely vivid and captures the setting and the character’s feelings so well, which is good because it is a very emotional novel. The depth of their shame, guilt, obsession, infatuation and desire is what gives the taboo its spark. The smut is also incredibly well written, but it does get very intense, so keep that in mind going in.

I have virtually no complaints about this novel. It did everything I wanted it to and did so skillfully and beautifully. Props again to the translator for doing such an excellent job capturing the beauty of the writing style. It's definitely worth a read for anyone who is up to taking on the themes it explores.

Spoiler

The scene where Alesia confronts Cecil about his relationship with Cyrus is perhaps one of the best scenes I’ve ever read in a novel. It captured her horror, betrayal, disgust and anguish so perfectly. I truly felt a sheer sense of terror in that scene, and Cecil’s horror and humiliation comes through perfectly. That feeling of dread, of sensing that something bad is about to happen was truly nauseating.

"Whether human or beast, such things were completely irrelevant. Only love existed there, and so he came to love him. Like a river flowing from high to low, like the moon waxing and then waning—it was a natural love. There had never been a day when he harbored any doubt." <<less
