This is a fairly standard genre peace. The quality of the writing is fine and it doesn't make heavy use of the same cut and paste descriptions again and again. The English translation (A Dreamers World) is solid and a step above the official translation on Webnovel.

The story itself is fairly cosy. It's too fast paced and dynamic to really be "slice of life". But at the same time there is no massive drama or angst, no one courting death and no real danger until the later (500+) chapters. The... more>> protagonists cheat ability doesn't seem that overpowered which was welcome but despite that the protagonist is definitely too OP. Not really a problem as its part of the genre but it does make you wonder why the author spent so much time on the earlier tournament arcs when there was zero tension. The MC does start to lose battles later and they never get arrogant which keeps them likeable despite being OP.

Surprisingly a lot of the secondary characters stick around and while basically no character, including the MC, get much "character growth" the relationships and the MC's reaction to people and their reaction to her feel a lot more natural and organic than a lot of these stories.

There's no accounting for taste but a lot of the complaints seem a bit weird. The MC being a reincarnator is brought up constantly and informs all of her person relations especially her family ones. Also some of the complaints are explicitly refuted in the text itself e.g. It is explicitly explained why the MC decided to be a beast tamer and all the world building re-enforces that choice (non beast tamers are second class citizens that live in danger with limited career and life opportunities you would have to be insane in the setting not to aim to be a beast trainer). Similarly complaints about fights "in the wild", in every single one of them multiple beasts attack if and when they can and the MC or the antagonists trainers get attacked in literally every single one. I mean some of the complaints read like the people didnt read the novel. <<less

From the high rating, I expected this novel to be a hidden gem. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a generic overpowered MC tale, where the protagonist effortlessly impresses everyone around them. The world-building is lackluster, and the characters feel one-dimensional.

The MC's transmigration is introduced early on but then seemingly forgotten. It has no impact on the story, and it feels like a tag added for the sake of being added rather than a meaningful plot point.

Furthermore, the MC's decision to become a battle beast master seems rather arbitrary. In... more>> a world filled with possibilities, one would expect the protagonist to at least consider other options. However, the idea of a different profession is never explored, as if it’s a given that the MC should be fighting throughout the novel.

This novel is a prime example of a "turn off your brain while reading" type of story. While that's perfectly fine for some readers, it's confusing given its high ratings. <<less

This is my first beast-control novel with a female protag and I'm quite surprised on how good it is. I like how FL interacted with her pet beasts and the pets also have their unique personalities.

It feels refreshing because there's no unnecessary drama or villains showing up like mushrooms asking for a face slap. Just a fun journey of leveling up with fl's cute pet beasts.

This is a still ongoing novel which I have been following for a while now.

Basically, if you enjoy Pokemon, you'll enjoy this. The mechanisms are not the same, but the way the magical critters interact with humanity in the various ways are very reminiscent of the anime. ... more>>
Spoiler

The main character's pets are also very reminiscent of Growlithe/Arcanine, Hoopa, Vaporeon, Mega-Pinsir...

[collapse]

So far the MC has won every official fight she's been in, and even most of the conflicts in the wild where she ended up facing higher level trainers and pets. So in that respect, there's not as much suspense at this point as to the end results of her fights. However, the author is really good at coming up with interesting tactics and describing them, so the fights themselves are fun to read.

The world building is also great, not only do you have many "provinces"/zones on the planet which have different environments and cultures to explore, there are also different planets altogether. People in different places can also have different attitudes and relationships with the Pokemon...I mean, magic pets. And there are also many ways in which professions and jobs within a society may change due to the presence of Pokemon pets. It's all fun to explore.

MC's personality is a strange mix of jaded and naive. Because she's a transmigrator, she's got experience with life in socializing with her peers/betters, making deals and contracts, and spotting scams. On the other hand, her lack of memories growing up in Pokeland magic pets world and the fast pace at which she gets sent to various different places, makes her very inexperienced and ignorant about things that other people take for common knowledge, or who learned in the high school terms that she skipped.

Her pets also get a lot of detailed characterization, such that they are very much major support characters of their own rather than just footnotes to the protagonist. It's the characterization (along with the well written fight scenes) that make you want to root for them despite the lack of suspense as to the final result of the competition. <<less

A generic op protagonist story with Pokemon themes. I suspect this story got good reviews because it is a rare female MC power progression story, but it's not as well written as reviews suggest.

The thing I disliked most was the mc's attitude to their pets. They don't have to be a saint and care about animal rights, but at least make their attitude consistent! MC risks her life to stop strong trainers from capturing and forcing contracts with unwilling pets. The MC and the trainers don't know each other, and... more>> MC can't even form contracts with said pets, so she isn't trying to snatch them away, she is doing it for ethical reasons. But on the other side, MC also drools over strong uncontracted pets and even mentions that she would force a contract if she could. She actually considers this as an option before saying that the pet is too strong, so she'll have to resort to trickery instead. This is so hypocritical and I don't understand MC's stance here.

There's other issues too. As others have already mentioned, MC makes important life decisions without considering other options or thinking about it. She's a trainer cuz she's a trainer, and she battles because she battles.

MC is also Mary Sue levels of lucky, finds a treasure by tripping on a rock lucky, and her transmigration is also never brought up and nobody seems to notice. Standard fare for these types of novels though, so I don't mind.

Fights are basically pokemon battles. We have moves, we have turns, and for some unknown reason you cannot sneak attack outside your turn. You can't attack the trainer, and the trainers do not attack either. And this is outside the arena, in real battles. There are no rules in fights, but everyone behaves as if rules exist. The author refuses to say the word pokemon, but it's basically a pokemon fanfic at this point.

Anyway, novel is not worth the hype. You can still read it if you are desperate for strong female MC novels, but lose your brain while doing so. <<less

Love the story, I'm looking forward to new chapter every day.

Like others said, the MC is OP and basically never lose, so if you aren't into that then this isn't really for you.

The cheat system is very hand off, it's basically a passive that increases pets' experience and skill efficiency. So no random missions or rewards that come out of nowhere. MC's is lucky though, so like in many other novels, she will be put in tough situations then come out of it gaining good stuffs.

The story has a good... more>> mix of progression and SoL, the pace isn't too fast nor slow. MC is moving forward fast, but still has plenty of fun interactions between pet/pet, pet/human. The fights are mostly tournament style, pet vs pet only. And because she obtains new pets, pets learn new skills or make better use of old skills, they don't feel stale.

Below are some refutations of the other review:

Spoiler

-MC risks her life to stop strong trainers from capturing and forcing contracts with unwilling pets. The MC and the trainers don't know each other, and MC can't even form contracts with said pets, so she isn't trying to snatch them away, she is doing it for ethical reasons. But on the other side, MC also drools over strong uncontracted pets and even mentions that she would force a contract if she could. She actually considers this as an option before saying that the pet is too strong, so she'll have to resort to trickery instead. This is so hypocritical and I don't understand MC's stance here.

->This is just bad reading here. MC doesn't care much about other trainers forcing a contract. She even wants to just get away because said trainers are stronger than her. MC's big thing though, is that she usually supports her pets' want. In this situation, her pet was very eager to help the other unwilling pet, so she chose to help it too. This will happen quite a lot, where MC will choose to do or not to do something based on her pets. Eg: Someone bribes her to intentionally lose battle, she only refuse because it'll ruin her righteous image in her pets' eyes.

[collapse]

Spoiler

-MC makes important life decisions without considering other options or thinking about it. She's a trainer cuz she's a trainer, and she battles because she battles.

->It's a fking beast taming world, everyone trains their pets there. She decided to go all in aiming for the top place because she loves the battles, and she has the cheat to do so. Doing so will also make it easier for her to travel around. You don't need some kind of deep trauma backstory to aim for something.

[collapse]

Spoiler

-Fights are basically pokemon battles. We have moves, we have turns, and for some unknown reason you cannot sneak attack outside your turn. You can't attack the trainer, and the trainers do not attack either. And this is outside the arena, in real battles. There are no rules in fights, but everyone behaves as if rules exist

->False, outside the arena, they absolutely target the other trainers. There aren't a lot of outside arena battles in the story, but in all of them, the priority is to knock the trainers out, even just targeting them will help distract the pets. This is a civilized society though, killing is avoided, so you'll see many situations where stronger trainers get handicapped cause they can't go too hard.

I couldn't stop reading, I've been binge reading for a whole week. This has become my fav beast Taming novel! The FL has 15 y.o. and has transmigrated into a world were beast are used for anything, transporting, giving birth, security, etc. When she opens her eyes she discovers that the majority of the population are beast tamers and she is one too. From then on she will contract the first beast, and start her journey as a super genius making records in everything (she's really OP). The battles are... more>> really cool and the world of beast is amazing (the author loved Pokemon so there are regional, national and so on tournaments...). The imagination of the author is endless. This is a really enjoyable read, really chill and (thank God) no face slapping or useless dialogues and so on. The pace is perfect. <<less

I enjoy this novel a lot. Not perfect, but well written and engaging. Some points:

OP Protagonist: The protagonist is massively OP and basically never loses. Even on the rare occasion she loses the match she will win the game. After the first tournament you will start to feel like she won't lose, and the feeling that things will always go her way in various aspects ... more>>
Spoiler

such as winning the lottery to spend unlimited money for a year

[collapse]
will only grow. I don't particularly mind, but if that bothers you a lot this might not be the novel for you. Usually things going her way are either a result of people trying to make a connection with her or there's a convincing enough situation set up for it. Whether it's a tournament or outside a tournament it scales well with her power and there's always at least something that is challenging enough to be interesting reading how she gets through it (or escapes it), and she does seem to progress slower after each stage (relatively speaking; it's still way too fast for that world), but ultimately it is still an OP protagonist novel.

Transmigration: I can see some aspects that this affects such as being more aware of scams and conscious of the importance of money than someone that age might typically be and more willing to study compared to the old person. I don't think it was really necessary, but it's not something I care that much about.

Protagonist: I like her personality. I don't have much to say about it, but can't leave it out.

Pet beasts: Each of the pet beasts has its own personality, interests, and motivation. Although she would still be powerful, the MC's ability to understand these aspects of her pet beasts is a key factor in making full use of her golden finger, and I find this one of the strongest parts of the story.

Mother: Agree with another reviewer: their relationship is cute, funny, and relatable.

Other relationships: There are a lot of relationships that really only last for one plot arc and then kind of fall off or at most the character will pop up in social media after the next big development. It's not unrealistic exactly, but sometimes it's a little unsatisfying. For example for the first big high school tournament she got moved to a more advanced team, but after we got to know her previous teammates a bit I wanted to know a bit more about how they did. It wasn't completely unaddressed, and it's not like I wanted to see detailed accounts of all their fights too, but maybe somewhere in the middle.

Drama: As another reviewer said, it's nice that there's not too much big drama, but there are a couple of drama setups that feel unsatisfactorily resolved. The first is the relationship with the paternal family, especially the grandmother which is strained but not antagonistic and seems to be going somewhere but has been on pause for many chapters. However, I suspect that this will be addressed more in the future and these things take time and she's currently

so it's not a big deal.

The second is a rival school which

cheats and their best player plays cruelly

[collapse]
and she just beats their best player and the first spoiler issue the final consequences are implied to happen off screen, while the second is not really addressed at all.

Combined with the previous point, I would say that the emotional payout for some things does not always feel in proportion with the setup. I suspect there are cultural factors here. Most Chinese media feels tonally off and unsatisfying to me, and this issue gives me some of the same weird feelings, but not to the extent it puts me off the story.

Fight scenes: Very engaging. I am easily exhausted by novels that focus too much on the fighting, but this goes into just the right amount of detail. Occasionally it will drag a little, but usually even if I know she's going to win (or escape safely) it's interesting to read how. Tournaments are broken up with things she's doing in between matches, so I don't get too fatigued by endless fighting. <<less

Guys... I've actually finished the whole 1009 chapters of this novel... hahaha I cannot believe it!! I wish it was completed but alas, the second volume just started😔

Definitely not for everyone. Especially if you dislike OP characters. I don't really have objection because its satisfying to read, what else. They work hard too, so its not just something that's really in your face. Its unbelievable to think that I witness her pets cultivation from the very start to what they are now in the first volume's ending. Her pets each... more>> really have their own charm, I love every one of them. I'm so excited about her future pets. (I'm also excited for the Interstellar Cup. I'm waitingggg)

I just finished so I can't give a longass review but it really is good. I hope my enthusiasm to read this doesn't dissappear with this break. I wanna stack up the future chapters first. <<less

This is a pretty good novel.

While the MC never really struggle. The novel isn't really about her either. It's about her journey and what we learn on the way. The relations between a Beast tamer and the beasts. The society built around humans and beasts. Different views among Tamers and much more.

The MC seems OP and in some ways she is, however alot of her strength belongs to her beasts.

The MC got a gold finger and she's exeptional on planning and making strategies. However she's severely lacking on knowledge (she... more>> knows literally nothing when she first starts out). She also got an Eye for talent as she noticed pecularities with both her first two pets and promply got them.

Her beasts is also talented, much of their character is influenced by the MC and the way she trains them.

The MC's strength is much due to her pets who improves themselves on their own.

I think the part I appreciate the most about the MC is that she seem to understand very well whats truly important to her and she knows how to be grateful to those that help her out (it'll become very evident around chapter 600-800 somewhere).

Aside from the above there's also sprinkled comedy on top of the story, just enough to keep it enjoyable.

The writing is good, the translation is also good.

I'd like to write more, but I shan't

Should you read this?

It is absolutely worth a try, I personally loved it.

That being said, don't expect much struggling here. Instead expect a relaxing and interesting journey to a beast taming world. <<less

I really like this story, It's not often that we have beast taming with a female lead.

I like her, she's funny, smart and competent. I like that the author doesn't make drama with bad people. For expemple her father left her and her mother to lives with another woman and child but we don't see them and the FL mention that he feels guilty and gives money.

Most of people she meets are friends or passerby and not 2d antagonists talking non sens.

I dislike this novel. It is simple, but borrows a lot of things from pokemon, like abilities and types. Transmigration so far had pretty much nothing to do with the story, other than that MC has an older mental age than her "peers".

The translation (A dreamer's world) feels like mtl and then edited for consistency, because of grammar structures in chinese is very apparent in this translation.

A fun and light read, strongly reminiscent of pokemon.

There are some significant weaknesses, but the distinct personalities of both humans and pet beasts and the nice scattering of humorous content keep me as a reader engaged and in a good mood.

Since enjoyability is the primary reason for reading these kinds of books, I believe that while slightly inflated 'Beast Taming: Starting From Zero' does deserve a high rating.

The primary weakness of the work is that the MC is too OP. It's fine to be powerful and have quick progression, but... more>> in my memory the MC has not lost a single time the entire 515 chapters I have read so far. Not even a draw or forfeit, or winning with significant costs that require time to recoup. The suspense of an uncertain outcome is entirely absent.

Whenever the author needs an excuse, the answer is money or luck leading to money. Please leave all your financial know-how at the door, because true frustration awaits otherwise. <<less

Pretty fun story, and I'm enjoying the evolutions, but it's getting harder to overlook how much the story steals from Pokémon. Most of the abilities and moves introduced in the past ~100 chapters have been direct copies of Pokémon moves. Which would be fine, but they even copied stuff that doesn't make sense in this world.

Fortunately, the MC is not boring, and the 'golden finger' is not overused and doesn't feel cheaty. My only complaint about the MC is that this isn't transmigration/reincarnation, she never uses any of the knowledge... more>> from her 1st life or even brings it up after the first arc.

Edit: Oh and I almost forgot about the random unlimited balance debit card MC randomly wins from a lottery. This is the turning point at which the writing starts getting weaker. I feel like the novel could easily be a 4/5 if it got a real translation, but the edited MTL holds it back quite a bit. <<less

Fun story. This is type of novel that rely heavily on shock factor, its actually one of the annoying thing in the novel, so many lines fawning over MC, I recommend skim them altogether since they became old very fast, its not like they're important most of the time.

Other than that I find this novel very enjoyable, the daily life of MC and her beasts, how they meet and how they bond. I also like how light themed it is, well sure there are some shady stuff going on but... more>> there's nothing overly complicated, no revenge story whatsoever, no unnecessary nationalism no petty bickering etc. Character interaction are funny too and even if MC is op as hell her challenges aren't light either. I also like how they handled tournament events because it only focused on MC battles, so it doesn't stretched like most tournament events in other media.

One thing that I absolutely like about this novel is the build up for upcoming major events, I absolutely love it and the pace is really good making it satisfying to read for such a power fantasy story unlike most where sometimes they dragged too much making it tiring to read or pacing it waay too fast.

Honestly one of the best power fantasy I've ever read, but if you expect something serious, gritty, and majestic grand plot, you'd be disappointed. This is light comedy themed power fantasy much like pokemon itself, but MC is op af, granted I dont know much about pokemon, but from what I've heard there are nothing gritty or dark about them except its lore, the story itself is rather light. <<less

I love this story. It’s rare to see a female lead in beast taming. She’s funny, smart, and capable. The author avoids unnecessary drama; even her father, who left, isn’t a big issue—he just sends money out of guilt. Most characters are friends or neutral, not pointless villains. The game and competition aspects are great, and her bond with her pets is really enjoyable.

This is a novel about a woman who transmigrated to the body of a 15yr old girl who lives in a Pokémon like world. There are enough differences to say that it is not the Pokémon world. Instead of Pokeballs there are contracts and there are a lot of differences with the types of beasts that can be contracted and the skills they have. And wild beasts can be found outside cities but they are mostly weak. The very strong wild beasts live in special dimensions that can be accessed... more>> from rifts that appear randomly. There are also things that are also in Pokémon but finding them feels more like finding an easter egg.

Spoiler

Off course there is a golden finger mechanism which gives her advantages with training her contracted pets. It allows her to go through the ranks much faster, which is mostly used to look cool and show off. I'm sure it will change once she visits the special dimensions. And although the MC is incredibly lucky the author at least tries to explain where the luck comes from, and even though the MC is just as lucky as the mc's in the novels where it looks like the world shapes itself around the needs of the MC but because there are explanations it doesn't feel like the world provides for every need of the mc

[collapse]

This novel off course suffers from some of the problems that most translated Chinese fantasy novels suffer from. A lot of the stories in this genre have the problem that it is written as an high paced action story and in the proces the stories and context that leads up to the action is neglected. It makes it look like a lot of stuff just happens to the main character without much planning behind it. And there is so much effort put into making the main character look good (peanut gallery ready to fawn over the MC, elaborate action scenes, TV interviews, etc) that the little bit of background stories and building up towards events stand out as lacking. But I realize that these problems are with almost every Chinese fantasy novel and is more a result of how Chinese fantasy novel authors have to earn money than writing ability. <<less

One of the best novels I have ever read.

This is purely about growing strong and never stopping. I really like the MC, she knows her stuff and there are things she is not perfect at and tries to keep improving, The focus is mainly on the FL so the other characters are not shown in much depth but I don't hate that.

Currently its going good; the pace is good for me, not too fast, not too slow, the fight scenes can be a little bit drag but not to the... more>> point that it pisses you off; no romance so far and I think it would be good without it.

so 5/5. <<less
