Fate cut through my throat like a knife and judged my death to be without a resting place.

—That was how Adele would describe her past life.

As a queen, she ruled the Rolan Empire well, but in the end, she ended up under the guillotine.

The moment she was reborn, she learned—

After her death, Roland was torn apart by the struggle for the throne and the glory of the Empire was destroyed. All that was left of her in the history books was the phrase: “She was a worthy ruler, but a pity it was that she could not resist her fate.”

Back to the night of the mutiny, the queen sneered at her “fate”.

Later—

Those who betrayed her bowed beneath her throne as if they were possessed.

Once a knight who disdained pledging loyalty to her, now one who wished only to fight and die for her sake.

A hypocritical nobleman personally scoured the lands himself to present her precious jewels.

The heresy-hating bishop bows down to her and renounces his faith.

..

To fight for her sake, to write her letters of sweet nothings, and to never forget her even in their deaths.

A debauched queen on the surface, but with a heart cold as steel on the throne, “Heh.”

*

“You will not find another woman like her. Maddeningly beautiful and filled with ambition, an amorous queen, yet one so cruel.”

—This is how the imperial history books summed up the life of Adele the Great when they described her.

Where do I even start with this one? Well, first off this is a fantastic, plot heavy political story with a female MC. Unlike a lot of nobility/royalty stories that have a female MC, this one takes a much more realistic and darker tone about women in power during a time where men were the norm. As queen, she faces a lot of misogyny, opposition and slander for the sheer fact that she was born female. While her beauty does play a huge role in this story, 80% of it... more>> focuses on politics and how even though she is more than qualified to be queen, she struggles for her crown due to being a woman despite her competence.

Our main character is Adele, the gorgeous albino queen who used to be an abandoned princess. She is stunningly competent, she says what she needs to, kills who she needs to and does not cower no matter who the opponent. She's very jaded but not entirely as cold-hearted as the summary makes her out to be, she actually has a best friend (a female pirate captain who becomes her naval officer!!!) and their friendship is honestly incredibly cute. For example, there's a scene where Adele compares her friend to a lazy cat in the sun and couldn't resist rubbing her head, it's really cute!!! I will say though, the summary puts her as a femme fatale, however it's more like Adele is just an unrivaled beauty who attracts all the men. Except for a quite a few instances in the start, the rest of the scenes where men are attracted to her are more due to them looking at her and going nuts over her face rather than her intentionally seducing them.

Plot-wise, it's a little more complicated. Most of the story is about Adele trying to cement her rule and strengthen her empire in the story, but actually a good chunk of it delves into the politics and how it affects relationships of the people in said politics. It's refreshingly realistic about what it's like to be a noble or monarch. What you want is not always what you can get, what you want to do is not always an option, personal relationships do not always mean it will be free of schemes or fall wayside due to obligations. Both Adele and Heinrich, who have duty and politics carved into their bones, especially show you what it means to be shackled to their station. Also, did I mention there actually is romance? A love triangle! I won't say who the winner is, but honestly I could have been ok with either of them. About Heinrich, who I'd argue is the most important person in this whole story outside of Adele:

Spoiler

I know someone is going to say it so first and foremost I want to put out there that he did NOT groom her. Yes he was her ex-tutor, yes he knew her as a kid, but when they met he didn't fall in love with her at first sight he just didn't have the heart to reject being her tutor because she was a lonely eight year old. He taught her how to be king, not how to be his child bride.

The relationship between him and Adele is incredibly complicated, but it's not as simple as a one sided love on his part alone. At the beginning of the story, Heinrich has already betrayed Adele and her trust is lost so it's not until later do see how much they actually loved each other in the past. For example, Heinrich disobeyed orders from his family and even violates very important family rules to protect her. On the other hand, privately towards her mother-figure, Adele says that she thought as long as she gave her love to him, they could continue on together forever, that she thought he would always choose her over his family and while she can't cry anymore as queen, her mother-figure cries for her. Their relationship is lost during the political struggle at the start, and might not have even matched up entirely but please don't think it was always just one sided on his part as they had both cared for each other greatly and had a huge affect on each other.

[collapse]

Overall, this story is an incredibly well written and realistic historical fantasy. The enemies are competent and realistic, the relationships in the story are incredibly complex and no one can be boiled down to just "good or bad", people in this story make mistakes and have regrets. The romance is pretty well written, though subtle, and MC being female/queen during a time where men were dominant has real consequences in this story. I highly, highly recommend you give this story a shot if you like plot heavy stories with a highly competent MC. <<less

The female protagonist kinda reminds of Elizabeth the Great, aka the virg*n Queen, except more epic and larger than life.

She's the most beautiful woman in the world; incredibly charismatic so much so that disloyal, opportunistic or hostile courtiers fall under her spell and become loyal subordinates. She's smart and ruthless when she has to be, but she's also pragmatic enough to make use of the people around her, even though she's aware if she gives them the opportunity they'd backstab her.

Despite all the people that fight for her attention and... more>> affection, her kingdom is her first and only priority. She's learned the bitter lesson in her past life that she can't rule with idealism, and that people have their own agendas and would obstruct or pull her down for their own interests. So this time she's not the Good Ruler anymore; instead she wants to be a Great Ruler, and make her kingdom into a Great Empire.

As the previous reviewer said before, with her beauty, charisma, and future knowledge, she is slowly turning herself into this holy, untouchable symbol to secure her people's loyalty to her

Spoiler

and flashforwards from historical documents, etc show that she's succeeded in turning her reign into the Golden Age of her country

I'm loving it so far!!! MC is breathtakingly gorgeous and she knows it and she knows that everyone else knows it so she uses it to her advantage. She ruthlessly wields her own beauty like a whip and turns everyone into her jealous s*aves and it's great. We stan a woman who's beautiful and completely unapologetic about using her beauty to her advantage!! Also, she's seduced but the farthest she's gone with any man is a kiss, so I'm happy about that. This isn't smu*t where she has to sleep... more>> with every man to get allies. It's more like she seduces them and uses their desire to conquer her to her advantage, she tantalizes them, gives them the possibility to make them willingly submit to her. But none of the men get too close because while they desire her, she's also kind of like an untouchable sacred deity. It's fascinating! <<less
