Li Chao Ge had killed many people in her previous life.

When a family looked down on her, she obliterated the family. When the man she liked slept with her imperial sister, she killed the imperial sister. When her mother wanted to pass the throne to her younger brother, she killed her mother.

As Li Chao Ge wished, she became the female empress of the dynasty. She was sorry for many people, but never for Pei Ji An. But in the end, she was killed by Pei Ji’an.

Li Chao Ge didn’t understand, she was good to Pei Ji An, then why did Pei Ji An kill her?

Just because she had separated him and the imperial sister?

After rebirth, Li Chao Ge aggressively went to Pei Ji An’s engagement banquet to question him but suddenly saw Pei Ji An’s cousin.

The person was cold and elegant, like an immortal, very much in line with Li Chao Ge’s aesthetics. Li Chao Ge got tempted and decided to change her mind and rob the person first.

Qin Ke was one of four Lord of Heaven, he was the in-charge of justice. He was cold, ruthless, and unloving.

It was a sin for the immortal to move the mortal heart. Under his hand, countless immortals were deprived of their immortal bones and entered the cycle of reincarnation.

Because of some reasons, the catastrophe of Ji An failed, and Qin Ke went down to assist him to overcome the tribulation, and he became the cousin of Ji An, Gu Ming Ke.

But in the mortal world, the cold Lord of Heaven was robbed by a cruel woman.

Qin Ke thought this was just a catastrophe, and she was just an illusion. But in the end, he unknowingly sank into the illusion, unable to extricate himself.

FYI the bb translation is split, ch17 is just ch5 in the raws. Foxaholic translation follows the raws.

A fun read composed of 11 units where MC and ML solve various paranormal mysteries while advancing over-arching plots involving the mortal dynasty (borrowing a lot from the actual Wu Zetian's rise to power), the ml's personal history, and the MC and ml's developing relationship. It does run in the typical cnovel issue of too packed of an ending arc and the heavenly realm chapters are a little messy in terms of execution.

Spoiler

A bigger weakness to the book is while it sells itself as strong MC, the MC is actually not that strong. The ML did a lot of saving damsel in distress moments and basically solved the story's main plot point. Author could have developed the mc's strength more evenly throughout the book vs doing it all at the last 10 chapters.

The romance is unevenly developed and I'm not complaining about the lack of romance. It's that they went from 10 to 100 within just the last 20 or so chapters, leaving readers little time to digest and truly buy into it.

The existence of the all powerful heavenly realm devalues everything about the mortal realm. What's the point of mc's struggles when everything mortal is so short-lived and weak. That MC herself gave up the mortal realm struggle and ascended was a let down moment.

One of the best xianxia stories I have read. The summary is kind of misleading and the first chapters set the scene for the plot.

This novel is an epic journey on its own, it is an fascinating mix of romance, politics, mystery, and gods. I like that the story wasn't romance-heavy, instead the plot was the one that paved way for romance to blossom. I got s**ked into the characters at first, their dialogue and actions are actually one of the best-written I've ever seen.

Li Chaoge may seem like a very cruel character at first, but then you see the layers of personality shining through. When she was reborn, she viewed her past life as a mistake that she would never let happen again. Not only that, but she wasn't stuck on her past, she tried to prevent those past tragedies to happen again and immediately noticed that because of her actions, and some conflicting elements, some events even changed in contrast to the past. She knew that this life would be brand-new and never lingered on her past too long. She is brave, beautiful, and strong. She wasn't an innocent heroine that was forced to kill people and blame it on circumstances, no she even sighs at her wrongdoings at her past life but she is her, bright, and firm and dangerous. She is unpleasant and quick-tempered, but also with the cunning mind of a princess. Even if her actions could be justified with her being a tool for the queen, she never dwelled in the past, because she knew that if circumstances were reversed, these people would draw their own swords at her. She simply lived and paid righteousness with good and bad with evil.

The author also wrote about this, when she showed the first chapter to her friends the feedback was that she was too vicious, too violent, and many recommended that they change her character. The author didn't change a word and still wrote the heroine as it is, and I am glad for that.

Pei Ji'an is one very interesting character too. He wasn't the male lead, but as one of the reborn characters, he also viewed his past life with regrets and tried to change some things, which he ultimately failed to stop (and was even saved by Li Chaoge). The woman who was the cause of the tragedy in the past, he even felt pity for. Why? Because beneath those he also knew that there was self-interest and power-struggled involved, he even blamed himself for the cause of death of his fiancée back then who Li Chaoge killed because of his rash actions. It shows that he also recognizes his faults and even regrets some of his actions back then, and even empathized with Li Chaoge, politics is a war of blood and iron, it was said; for it was to be killed or be killed.

Li Chaoge was the right hand of the queen, whose ambitions were far-reaching. At the previous life and the present (unavoidable), the Pei Family was implicated, aristocrats were killed, it was a battle between the Queen and the other nobles that opposed her. Li Chaoge was her weapon, and she used her at her disposal. It was the same as the present, but Li Chaoge also wanted her present life to be more stable and to not end in that same sad tragedy. An incredible character, she never ran from her destiny but instead made a few adjustments at present so it can also fit her own plans.

The mystery also connect together brilliantly, with the people behind the incidents unmasked and their goals announced. The story also has Xianxia elements, how can I forget that colorful descriptions of sword fights, action packed scenes and dramatic twists? The author clearly spent the time researching about Taoism and civil law.

The male protagonist is Qin Ke or Gu Mingke in the mortal world. He is the Beichen Tianzun, the first of the four heavenly venerables. He is in charge of justice. He actually came down to assist Pei Ji'an on his heavenly calamity, as they eyed him as the next candidate to be the Xikui Tianzun (one of the 4 heavenly venerables). Pei Ji'an failed on his previous life so he was reborn again so that he can overcome the next heavenly calamity.

He is perfection incarnate, never do no wrong. The author perfectly describes his own feelings as a god who descended to the mortal realm after a thousand years. Even the romance wasn't rushed and when it did, it wasn't the blushing spring blossoms, youth of love you expect it to be. The author placed emphasis on his identity, because he is a principled, disciplined immortal and didn't make it to be just a male protagonist and a female protagonist riding in the sunset, fighting the heavens for their love. Qin Ke understands it, and Li Chaoge understands it too. They didn't try to escape and fought for justice, even if they got their own happiness, the happiness of many was still held as a responsibility. They had their own stance and upheld what was right.

The love between them is what I yearn the most, a love that fought for the justice they believed in and having a person who shared with a like-minded soul. Truly soulmates that walk hand in hand at the path of immortality, sharing troubles and joy together. The trust between them is genuine and natural, not even a third party can shake it.

I also want to mention the other characters, they didn't serve as foil for the main characters, they have their own distinct personas and they were so well-written that I was immersed at their own monologues. The thing I like about the characters is that they mostly acted in self-interest. Given that a lot of them were nobles, even the most spoiled one quickly grew up and became more cunning and didn't stay s*upid. They didn't mince with words and say emotional phrases but their own actions spoke for it, this story is truly an epic tale of a story that I would remember for a long time.

The characters, the plot, the main themes, action-packed scenes, and colorful descriptions, a masterpiece of a book that deserves an award for its masterful storytelling. <<less

Read everything though MTL. Take the blurb with a grain of salt. The story focuses less on the romance between the leads but more on investigating supernatural crimes, cultivation, and fight for the throne. Also, the FL is not as cruel as the blurb makes her out to be. She was more of a tool who had little to no choice but to follow the whims of her empress mother or else she would lose her own life.

Anyway, I really enjoyed how the Demon Division solved crimes and how each... more>> case was leading up to the big thing. I read this via MTL for three straight days because I got s**ked into the mystery and plot. <<less

Whoever rated this as 1 star is just here to sabotage.

A well-written plot with well-written characters. Character development and depth is probably the best point of this novel. You'll feel that the major characters are really alive. Each and everyone has their own flaws and merits.

The romance is more condensed towards the last few chapters. 3/4 of the story focused on the imperial life and subduing demons. They felt more like companions rather than lovers. Don't dive into this for the romance and expect more of solving crimes and diverting... more>> the dangers of power struggle in the palace. However, the climax towards the end showed how much they love each other. <<less

It's hella good, I'm shocked at the 3.5 star rating. The writing is tight, the plotline has few holes, and all the seemingly disconnected plot arcs slowly meet at the climax. On top of that, the main character is kickass (I love how the author wasn't afraid to have a FL who had to make hard choices and has blood on her hands. Her personality is rather knightly if I must be honest) and the ML is... well, I suppose he's a bit too perfect, but I'll give him a... more>> pass since he's a literal god.

A note on the novel's title - 谪仙, literally 'banished immortal' or 'exiled immortal', can actually be a compliment. It refers to people who are so competent and clever that surely they can be nothing less than an immortal doing time on earth.

Downsides:
There is one exception to what I said about the story - I wasn't a fan of the very, very last plot twist. I mean, I kinda get it, but also it came a bit out of left field for me.

I'd recommend reading the translation if there's one. MTL's not too bad but I had to switch back to Chinese a few times for all the Immortal Venerable Fairy etc. titles. If in about a year it is still not being translated I may swing back by and pick up the translation. <<less

In terms of a romance, it really hit the spot, but I won't lie, I had higher hopes for this novel. Spoilers ahead, consider yourself warned. Let's first talk about the dynamics between FL and ML. I enjoyed it a lot in the middle, bc they complemented each other so well. In other novels, you have peerless ML who is better than the FL at everything you could ever think of, that you wonder what he even sees in FL. Clearly, there's no equal relationship or anything for the ML... more>> to learn from. At most, FL is just better than the other loser ladies and therefore ML, who is superior above all, can settle down with her. However, in this novel, even though it was like this, it's not unexplainable - ML literally has heaps of experience on FL. We're talking he's been doing this sh*t for centuries as the leader of the justice division in heaven. He's not some child genius leading winning battles since he was 9 or some nonsense. *Cough* unlike some novels which shall not be mentioned by name. Also, FL gets the chance to perform well in front of him, instead of relying on him all the time. They're in equal positions - she's the commander of the demon suppression division, he's the master of the crime division. Basically, she deals with demonic cases, and he deals with human cases, it's all very exciting. The various cases that they work on together shows not only her competence, but the progress of their relationship, from antagonistic and professional to slowly respecting each other's personality and talents and becoming friendly, and finally becoming a couple. If it stayed like that, it'll have been great. Sadly, it didn't meet my expectations at the end.

From the beginning, you get introduced to Li Chaoge, the FL, who has seemingly overcome all odds in her previous life to take the throne. As a woman! It was unprecedented for me to read that in a chinese historical romance novel, where even if it boasts strong female characters, you're used to stories of at most FLs who support their peerless husbands on the throne and attract jealousy bc he doesn't take concubines or whatever. But she took the throne! Not only that, her mother was also the emperor before her! It's fine if the author avoids feminist themes from the beginning, bc I don't have such high hopes for romance novels, but she didn't - the dynamic between the queen and LCG is fascinating from the start. The author never shied away from feminist themes - our MC admits that if her mom had not taken the throne herself in her past life, she would've never thought it possible. She would've never came up with it on her own, and would've spent her life without such high ambitions, taking the steps of many dissatisfied women before her. In the words of Emily Dickinson - 'Had I not seen the Sun, I could have borne the shade'. But the empress' ambitions changed all that. It makes you wonder, what kind of woman could break free of the shackles of her upbringing, have such incredulous ideas to take the throne despite her humble origins, and actually succeed? In 2 lifetimes, she was the empress. Her reign was inevitable; lamented by the 2nd ML, confirmed by the heavenly immortals. That's not to say she's a perfect individual, no one ambitious enough to seize the throne would not be power hungry. She loves herself the most, at the expense of her children. She's willing to sacrifice FL as a child, and also deposed her own son from the throne. On the other hand, she's very determined to be a good emperor, and she is actually competent. That makes her all the more 3 dimensional, and opens up new opportunities - where she was lacking, could her next generation, the MC, succeed? Could the MC make up for her flaws and do better with her mother the empress as an example? The novel opens up these questions, but never answers them satisfactorily.

Let's see the things the empress brings up that is never addressed. After she takes the throne, there is a point in time where she's trying to pick an heir for the throne. She's debating between two choices, her son, Li Huai, and her nephew, Wu-something. Why the dilemma? Because her surname is Wu, if she picks her son, Wu's reign will be over as soon as she passes. The throne will be handed back to the Li Tang dynasty. Even if she makes him change his name, she's sure that he will just change it back after her death bc he has greater loyalties towards his dead father. However, if she picks her nephew, it's still not her own flesh and blood. The chinese have a superstition that if your relatives don't burn offerings for you, you will become a hungry ghost after death. Her nephew would respect her, but would he burn offerings for her and treat her as his own parents? Obviously not. At this point, I was thinking, she took the throne as a woman herself, why didn't she think of the perfect candidate, LCG, her daughter? But she did! She reveals to LCG after a fashion that she's aware of her ambitions, but can't pass the throne to her unless she marries her nephew. In that case, her descendants will have the the empress' surname and the throne can be passed on to LCG. As a woman who seized the throne, she's very aware of how her ministers think, and admits that they're just seeing her as a placeholder for the throne, thinking that when she dies, her son will inherit and right things again. She's seen as this unscrupulous mother who seized the throne from her own son even though her son is incompetent, and she is a better emperor. One of the reasons she can sit on the throne was still because she was the queen before, and birthed the crown prince during her husband's reign, therefore she's seen as the equivalent of a widow running the business after her husband dies. This is the genius, scheming and powerful empress who took the throne in 2 lifetimes, yet she still had these limitations of needing relations to men! She can't pass on the throne to MC without those restrictions as then she would really be seen as trying to violate the order of things, and the resulting rebellions that would cause would be the end of her dynasty. What about MC? She's always been this super strong character who has martial arts, and ML is also good at fighting, so couldn't she just fight the lot of them? How will she manoeuvre these circumstances?

Well, she doesn't. She simply gives up the throne to become immortal, to chase ML who returned to heaven. On one hand, obviously becoming immortal is better than the human throne, on the other hand, why did the author raise these points then? The empress ends up passing the throne to her son, and her fears do come true - her death monument doesn't even acknowledge her as emperor despite all the things she did for the people during her reign. She's simply recorded as the previous emperor's wife. WTF. The female emperor's magnificent reign came to end like this - nameless, dusted and done. What closure am I supposed to get from this? Furthermore, is the situation in heaven better for women? No, it's mentioned that FL will be the first female official in heaven, as in there's no other. You're telling me even with their power equalised and women being able to train themselves in martial arts, they still don't take positions of power? What is the author trying to express? It really seemed like the author shot herself in the foot by trying to give FL a 'not like other girls' flavour at the end, trampling down whatever messages she could've expressed for women's empowerment to highlight how special the MC is. Even though the only reason FL is strong is bc she had the example of strong women to begin with! The mother she respected so much in spite of their conflicts! She was never set up as someone special just bc she is the MC, separate from other women, but now the author's embellishment tries to set her up as some mary sue!

Furthermore, the ending arc also highlighted how superior the ML was compared to her again, kind of ruining the previously established equality - yes, he is the lord supreme reigning over justice in heaven, but why does he have to take up all the responsibility for their relationship? Basically, a relationship between mortals and immortals is not allowed, meaning ML and FL should be punished, but ML takes it all upon himself. It could be touching if the author controlled herself but it just went to highlight how powerful ML is in the end and took away any sacrificial feelings I had. If he's so powerful, what did he even sacrifice? Nothing. Basically, he's allotted like 39 lightning strikes for his punishment. It was supposed to be half, but he took on the FL's part as well. Ugh, ok. Then get this, the officials debate whether to unseal his power to take on the strikes, bc he only had 1/10 of his power unsealed when he went down to earth. HE SAYS NO! He's willing to take on the strikes with mortal power! WTF. These strikes are said to be so powerful, no one ever survived them before. Some evil monster once tried, and he got vaporised by the second last strike, but ofc ML survives it no problem. Oh, he got into a coma but he woke up within a day when FL ascends to heaven and visits him. What a goddamn gary stu. He took 38 strikes and still had 1 left, so I was really hoping FL would at least take the last one to show that they're both responsible or whatever for their love, but nope. She just thinks 'oh I can't survive it'. Yea right, like the ML shouldn't have survived his? It's only the author's convenient decision methinks. Not only that, he goes and says that he wants 99 strikes actually to change heaven's law after all. Now, apparently surviving 39 strikes of lightning is already unprecedented, and he goes and offers to take more. He's really feeling like that kind of annoying teacher's pet who offers to do more homework at this point. Ofc, no suspense, he survives no problem after a dramatic moment where everyone thinks he died. Please, as a reader, I was not concerned at any moment. He's obviously the author's baby. He returns and of course, the lightning also strengthened him so he's now as strong as ever. Basically, the story ended with no significant messages for the readers to ponder upon, except wow, what a great immortal couple. Which I wasn't impressed with anyways. I preferred it way more when they were sharing joys and sorrows in the mortal world as equals, not some uber powerful ML and some FL who is powerful bc the author says so. Anyways, the loose ends really left me unhappy. Some might say the author is trying to be faithful to history and Wu Zetian's reign, but hey, it's a freaking story about immortals. How faithful would it have been from the start? If she had set out to write a brainless novel, fine, I enjoy those too, but she explored feminist themes only to dump them to the side for some 'love' story I was no longer interested in. <<less

This is a very good novel. Xian Xian has three (3) different plot threads that interweave flawlessly. These three (3) threads are: (1) the reincarnations of our MC, Li Chaoge and 2ML?, Pei Ji An; (2) the mortal past of our ML, Qin Ke/Gu Mingke; and (3) the budding romance between the MC and ML. For the majority of the novel, the plot unfolds while the MC and ML investigate different "supernatural" cases. As the MC and ML solve these cases, the court intrigue continues and the feelings between the... more>> MC and ML subtly deepen.

If you love T.V. Shows with a Monster of the Week format, e.g., Supernatural and an "Ancient China" setting, then this story is for you, because like in the show Supernatural, in this novel, the MC and ML relationship develops as they solve different cases. Moreover, slowly, a more profound villain emerges from the shadows.

P.S. If you don't mind spoilers, then the following comments or minor complaints/critiques are for you:

Spoiler

Pitifully, I didn't recognize (due to the supernatural elements and added characters) that the court drama was a fictional recreation, or re-imagining of the rise of the historically infamous Wu Zetian until late in the story. In that regard, I felt that I didn't quite understand the feelings of the elder Zhang brother for our MC. I like how the subplot ended, but I never could comprehend what about the 1st life of the MC inspired him to try and connect with her in this 2nd life.

Moreover, why did other characters begin to dream of the 1st life? To me, in my opinion, this was the only plot point I felt disappointed me. I suppose I was hoping that the MC herself would have a more profound past than she ended up with in the conclusion I read online. Here, the novel is listed as having 6 extras, but, there, the site I read the novel on, only seemed to have one additional chapter after the MC found the ML again in the mortal world. I think it would've been interesting, as a final twist (not the twin thing I believe another commenter alluded to in his commentary) if the MC herself was goddess (maybe from the underworld?) experiencing a tribulation. IF she was a goddess already, prior to the story's beginning, it could explain both why the other characters treated her so horribly in her 1st life, why those individuals recovered their memories--since as part of a tribulation--she was meant to suffer, and why she so impacted the 2ML's tribulation, provoking the ML himself to finally come down to the mortal realm, undergo a love tribulation with the MC, and confront his twin brother. Personally, I've always wanted to read a story where two people's tribulations--separately planned, perhaps by different powers--"accidently" interfere with each other. However, this was not to be and there is no obvert reason given as to why the MC and ML were so connected in personal character and circumstance. Alas, I suppose leaving the intersection of the MC and ML as a some kind of predestined love must suffice.

A really good story but I hope I can read translated version as reading in MTL is quite a big headache but I still read it since the story is good

  • strong FL not emotional but still rational I really like this type
  • its like a attraction at a sight for FL but not that die for love so I like it as I prefer romance as subplot or slow burn so its a bon appetite for me
  • domineering FL lead really ruthless but still understanding,
  • story is a mix of serious and light type
i think people who like royal palace politics story with a little bit of crime investigation and action type story you should just go for it

one more thing rather than reading it in mtl read it in chinese site... more>> with translation I found it late but still those sites are more statisfying <<less

This... a lot. I feel like a real drama is being played out from scratch, but FL personal characteristics are pretty good. I like confident characters and powerful women. But the plot isn't brilliant, there's an obvious repetitive structure in the novel. And the behavior of some characters looks silly at the beginning, but manifests itself at the end. I consider this's a wrong construction of history. I've lost all interest in the story in 30 chapters because the story at the beginning looks obvious and a little silly. But... more>> in fact, the story could turn out very good with the right disclosure of the characters. However, there are too many "ifs". Besides, the novel is really too stretched. I read up to chapter 60 and immediately moved on to the end.

Besides, I like good books. Even if the story's interesting enough, MTL can actually spoil my impression by half, or even more. You know, I like to have a good time, and not wade through thorns to the stars just to read a nove.

Considering this, it's 4 out of 5 <<less

Loved the novel. Even on a second read I still like it as much. Love it better than the imperial guard revenge though it’s following the same story pattern. Just felt this novel it was better developed: the arcs, the interactions between the characters, the romance. Loved the FL she is strong, opinionated and stubborn with a sense of honor and pride. Loved the ML. It’s a slow romance. Each arc was interesting as it’s about resolving a mystery or a case.

So far (c38) the novel is not only solid but also quite enjoyable, just like most of this authors novels. But unlike the others, I find Xian Xian to have a refreshing element: both its plot that is mostly centred around mysteries and its protagonist, Li Chaonge. She’s flawed and certainly someone who has commited a lot of sins that she cant excuse, but shes in no way evil or unlikeable. She deeply regrets the things shes done in her past life and tries to fix them in a way,... more>> while still doing her best to accomplish her goals (just in a less bloody way), something that fits her character of an ambitious but newly enlighten person.

I dont really have an opinion on the ML yet, and I cant say im enthusiastic to get to know him. <<less

This is a beautiful story

One of my fav character aside from the MC and ML, is the queen in early and later stage

She is an extraordinary woman. We can't judge her, and she doesn't need us to judge. All we can do is admire her

The love between Li Chaoge and Qin Ke is something that I always yearn to be. Without unnecessary misunderstanding, a healthy relationship build in love, trust and friendship
