A parody of Cultivation novels, similar to Konosuba but set in a Xianxia world. Absolutely a hidden gem for the English audience, this novel has been Top 10 on Qidian (the website where most Chinese novels are uploaded) for 11 months in a row, ever since the start of the year.

Official description:

“I’ve repeatedly emphasized that the cultivation world’s atmosphere was already crooked – I didn’t make it that way,” Sword Immortal Lu Yang declared during a press interview, expressing great anger. “They say history is written by the victors, so why am I still being falsely accused even though I’ve won?”

The next day.

“I’ve repeatedly emphasized that I’m the one who made the cultivation world’s atmosphere crooked. History is written by the victors, and I’ve won!” Sword Immortal Lu Yang declared during the press interview, expressing great anger.

A cultivation novel where the ultimate goal isn't immortality but just looking cool and beating the everliving crap out of anyone who had genuinely wronged you. (Shocking, I know, not just "You looked at me wrong, now you die" type shii usually seen in cultivation novels.) In this world, the best defense mechanism is being incredibly thick-skinned and utterly shameless. While other protagonists face world-ending threats seriously, this guy handles the antagonists in the most ridiculous ways imaginable, most of the time within 2-4 chapeters where in other novels it... more>> takes a whole volume. Bro is so used to bumping into powerhouses at least three full realms above him that world-shattering events barely register as a minor inconvenience anymore.

Even through the comedy, the worldbuilding is really good and there is actually an interesting story (if you don't take it too seriously).

The translation (at least the wuxiaworld version) is really good and the novel is overall a fresh read.

TL;DR: A comedy more than a Xianxia, but a comedy done very well.

First things first, the synopsis gives no information so I'll give a short summary.

The main character is the disciple of one of the five great immortal sects and has a very unconventional mind. This story follows him solving problems and having interactions in unintended or unexpected ways.

... more>> This novel is fantastic.

First of all, of course, the comedy. This novel is more a comedy than anything else, and if you take it too seriously, you might not enjoy it. This is clearly demonstrated by the idiot who rated it 2 stars before me.

There were many points where I laughed or even went back to reread. This is a very, very rare Xianxia comedy that I actually found really funny. Even for just that, I would recommend it.

Second of all, the characters. I love the entire cast of this book. The main character, the side characters, the enemies, even the passersby! I feel like each of them has life to them, with unique perspectives, goals, and personalities. There is not a single character in this book that I feel makes it worse. No characters are introduced for plot progression or anything.

Genuinely, I find it hard to think of novels that are even comparable in terms of crafting characters.

Third of all, the actual plot. There is constantly something going on, and that something is hilarious more often than not. I was never bored reading this book and was constantly anticipating what shenanigans the author would pull out next. A great read from the beginning all the way to the currently updated.

Fourthly, the translation. Both the translator and the translation are phenomenal for this work. The actual translation is very high-quality with zero mistakes and the translator is interactive by explaining strange terms with links to sources or just saying his thoughts. I'm so glad this work got picked up by him, give him some support.

If I had any critique about this novel, it would be about the cultivation itself. This novel is not about cultivation or anything like a traditional Xianxia in general. The main character doesn't dedicate his life to immortality or any other common trope, and cultivation level doesn't mean everything here either.

I think this is fine since it is not the story's focus. The focus is the comedy, and that is done perfectly. Forcing typical cultivation standards on this MC, such as expecting him to be ruthless in killing people, would absolutely worsen the story.

However, it is still worth mentioning if that is what you expect coming into it.

Overall, I would recommend this story to virtually anyone. In fact, this is a cultivation story that I might be able to recommend to real-life people outside of novelupdates. Amazing read. <<less

Translator here! I really enjoyed reading the novel so I wanted to share it with everyone who can't read Chinese! I laughed a ton while translating it so I hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I have. It's an extremely funny and anti-climatic parody of typical cultivation novels which is a delight to see as a long time reader of those typical over-saturated OP MC novels.

For those expecting a stereotypical cultivation novel, you'll find parts of it here and there but it's more of a comedic satire... more>> of the genre rather than your everyday cultivation novel. If you're tired of reading novels where the plot makes no sense and the MC gets power ups out of nowhere, I strongly encourage you to read this novel.

btw people complaining about the translation quality is usually because they're reading the MTL on webnovel instead of my translation.

Also, for people asking about harem, as of the most current chapter in the raws (1k+), Lu Yang has not gotten in a relationship with any character but it depends on the author if he decides to give Lu Yang a relationship but it's unlikely imo. This is a comedy novel after all. <<less

The story is nothing like the synopsis and it's definitely not like Cultivation Chat Group.

The story follows a young would-be cultivator that the author is determined to make look smart.

The story starts with the protagonist trying to join a sect and become a cultivator. The first arc is about him "outsmarting" the tests. The tests given to the protagonist ignored simple problems with the protagonists "clever" solutions.

... more>> The second was a training arc. It was decent, but nothing special.

The last arc I read related to a job the protagonist took. It turned into a detective conan style mystery. Complete with the protagonist giving his "this is how I figured out the mystery". But doing this in a fantasy novel is a horrible idea. Imagine the detective saying things like, (I'm making up the example so I don't post real spoilers) "the only way you could have mu*dered him was if you possessed a level 10 gryphon, or a barrier defeating potion, or contracted with a demon." It's complete nonsense. The audience can't play along at all. <<less

this novel it´s pure gold coated in comedy, a xianxia with modern elements like insurance, laws, pyramid schemes, etc. (Those are incorporated in the xianxia world like;
Spoiler

some guys buy insurance for accidents on the flying boat, or they can also go to jail if they fly in their sword when they are drunk XD

To keep things short, it's basically Cultivation Konosuba. It takes a couple of arcs to really heat up, but the novel really finds its pace once the MC (Lu Yang) awakens the Xianxia equivalent of Aqua (Huang Doudou, the Everlasting Fairy), who is hilarious as she constantly reveals to him the dark, embarrassing secrets (chuunibyou) of ancient cultivators that could obliterate him with a thought, making him fear for his life. Written by the same author as "The Reversal System Appears Only at the Mahayana Stage", the MC is completely... more>> Lawful Good and the story is focused on primarily lighthearted humor despite his strong sense of responsibility towards enforcing justice.

The standard cultivation in this novel progresses as follows:

  1. Qi Condensation
  2. Foundation Establishment
  3. Golden Core
  4. Nascent Soul
  5. Soul Transformation
  6. Void Refinement
  7. Fusion (or Unity, depends on translation)
  8. Tribulation Crossing (or "Transcending Tribulation", depends on translation)
  9. Half-Immortal
  10. Immortal
The MC's gimmick is that despite having low cultivation, every time he walks outside of the sect, he will inevitably cause a storm of trouble involving enemies at least 4 major realms higher than him, whether he intends to or not, and he'll somehow drag everyone else into it too. His second gimmick is that he is hilariously good at tricking people and taking advantage of win conditions that are too vague.

The majority of cultivators in the world are decidedly not serious, preferring to search for prime opportunities to act cool and brag over actually cultivating.

The side characters are fun and have personality to them, especially the MC's best friend Meng Jingzhou and the Everlasting Fairy, who simultaneously support and embarrass him. The setting feels very lively as the motivation for various divine phenomena is constantly revealed to be the result of the embarrassing moments of one ancient immortal to the next, and sometimes also touching as others are due to their unbreakable bonds.

Most of the side characters get vivid backstories, but not all of them get followed up on by the end. Romance is a weak point for this novel in particular, side characters are a strength. The author also spends a little too much time with the MC in the lower cultivation realms, which gave him less time to explore his life in the Tribulation and Immortal Stages. The finale is decently satisfying and resolves all of the major plot threads (if you include the 3 extra chapters he wrote), but it could've been better with a full epilogue arc as many minor plot threads got ignored. If you've finished his previous work, you know what I mean.

Full Spoilers for the Ending

Spoiler

The three final realms are Transcendence (must sever all karma), Omniscience (must be entangled with all karma), and Harmonization (must become one with the Heavenly Dao).

Lu Yang ascends to Immortality with the Trace Origin Dao Fruit, which allows him to see the past of any object and revert it. All the Immortals of past and present come to congratulate him, but using his Trace Origin technique, Lu Yang reveals that the Yingtian Immortal had been killed and his body possessed a long time ago by the same mastermind who killed the Everlasting Fairy, who did so to prevent her from reaching Omniscience, which would undo his Transcendence, something he achieved by killing everyone who ever knew him prior to the famed ancient immortals every being born.

Lu Yang and the Everlasting Fairy use their Dao Fruits to allow Yun Zhi to bring the mastermind to the verge of defeat without merging with the Heavenly Dao. The mastermind is forced to make a last minute leap to an alternate timeline where Lu Yang did not revive Huang Doudou, which ironically makes Lu Yang even stronger and achieve Omniscience, allowing him to defeat the mastermind directly and revive Huang Doudou.

Extra 1-2: Whatever Happened to Li Haoran

Back in the original timeline, with his time leap the mastermind has died, Meng Jingzhou ascends to become the Karma Immortal, and Li Haoran awakens his memories as Yingtian Immortal, earning himself a surprise beating from his old friends in front of his previous (8th) life's wife and daughter. He ascends to immortality using the Reincarnation Dao Fruit, establishing the Netherworld and proper reincarnation.

Extra 3 - The Actual Ending

It is Huang Doudou's birthday and everyone is counting on Lu Yang to trick her into coming back to the sect to celebrate it. Huang Doudou and Lu Yang have making random secret realms across the universe for fun. She sees through Lu Yang's attempts to bring her to her birthday party, admitting that she thinks the day he revived her is more special. Lu Yang confesses his feelings for her and they become a couple. This silently enrages Yun Zhi, who proactively fights Huang Doudou for the first time to vent. Lu Yang easily stops the fight, revealing he has reached Transcendence, which confuses the two as this should in theory mean he has severed all karma and been forgotten. Lu Yang reveals that he used his throwaway ability to Invert Yin and Yang to transcend as "Lu Yin", thus retaining karma as "Lu Yang". He speculates this ability was developed by one of the mastermind's friends so they could transcend without killing one another, but was ironically killed before he could ever share it. Huang Doudou realizes Lu Yang has feelings for Yun Zhi as well, but flaunts her relationship in front of the latter anyway. Yun Zhi is once again, silently enraged, and the series ends

This novel is absolutely unhinged. The comedy is gold and the writing and grammar is surprisingly excellent quality. Does not make fun of troupes directly but in a subtle way. Every time you think a cliche is coming, you'll be hit with the unhingedness of this novel.

A light-hearted xianxia-themed comedy

It's pretty well-written, with its main appeal also being its main flaw.

The characters' thought process are a bit unconventional. This easily creates humoric moments, which is essential to such a story, but perhaps too many characters exhibit this strangeness, resulting in dialogue or developments that seems almost random at times, and contrived/forced at worst. Restricting these strangeness to a specific kind per character or limiting these comedic characters would make the story more believable. As it currently stands, it tests the readers' suspension of disbelief a bit... more>> too much for full enjoyment.

Another obvious flaw is with the dialogue. Sometimes it is used as exposition, which is not exactly wrong, but when it's done as an info dump, it is. Rather than being short and witty, dialogue instead becomes a wall of text. This and its info dumping nature makes it very tempting to just skim through it. While good for character counts, it's horrible for enjoyment. If it is to be long to be skip-able, it only works in a comic, not in a novel.

One good thing is that most reveals are done well, or in other words, setup fairly. This is in contrast to many in the same pile trying to look smart yet just withholding any clues and just revealing things as they come for you to revel in the main character's intelligence or something.

Overall it is written pretty ok, and fun to read. Would recommend as a time-passer.

Its probably best as a comic but this is great also.

P.S. The author tries a lot of trope subversion. <<less

Good xianxia novel.

It's generic weak OP MC, cultivating from weak to strong, with the help from golden finger senior sister and the hidden-in-the-sea-of concious deceased immortal soul.

He has to fight the opponents which have higher power than him but wins everytime. His sect has the whole cultivation world as enemy. So everwhere the MC goes, there're powerhouses who want to stomp him to meat pulp. Life outside the sect is so hard.

The background world is in chaos. Worlds were destroyed. Stars were destroyed and faked. Pasts & histories were destroyed... more>> or fabricated. The current world is in the pre-chaos period. Laws exist, many & extensive. But the outlaws are everywhere, waiting to be the stepstones of the MC.

Sound very generic, ehh? That's right. But when the writer puts everything together, the novel stands out and fly through the nine heaven !

As the generic xianxia, this novel does not lag those dog-eat-dog, man-eat-man scenes. But the MC who has two golden fingers swallows them all.

Caveat #1: lot of beauties but sorry, expect no harem. The most beatiful girl stays with MC days and nights; but sorry, expect no 18+ scence.

#2 : lot of Chinese idioms and word puns and references. Reading MTL is next to scratching your itching back through tripple thick gloves.

Conclusion : comedy-based generic xianxia novel that is very extra-ordinary. Deserve 5 stars rating. <<less

I'll keep it short. The quality is good enough to force me to write a review.

Comedy: Genuinely fresh; some elements are repeated but never appear formulaic. It's lively

Plot and World-building: Well-crafted

Romance: Nearly nonexistent (or used for comedic purposes) until the very end.

In my evaluation, the author is a very intelligent fellow. This comedy is tiers above most of the tr*sh that passes for WNs.

Easily one of my favorites. I know a lot of people love Cultivation Chat Group, but the comedy never hit right for me (maybe I didn’t read far enough), this one, however, always gets at least a chuckle out of me every couple chapters. Highly recommend.

It breaks the mold of xianxia in a very good way. There are some cliches and parallels, but it often does them different in a way that’s refreshing or satirizes them. Don’t want to make any direct comparisons to avoid tainting your perspective. The lead... more>> character cast is relatively small and strong. There’s a bit of an overarching plot that’s honestly pretty typical but isn’t harped on in a way that makes it annoying like other novels.

I’m sure you’ve gathered that it’s not really a cultivation story. A pro or con depending on your tastes. Personally the setting is enough for me. Seeing the way the MC makes an atypical journey in the cultivation world is really what the comedy is about. <<less

This novel is so good I created an account just to review it. The main character, Lu Yang is really funny and the author is good at making jokes which will subvert your expectations if you base them off the traditional Chinese novels. Very fun, lighthearted read. The only flaw in this novel would be that the plot progression is a bit slow but the comedy definitely makes up for it. Definitely more of a comedy novel than a Xianxia

Suprisingly its pretty good, I'm hooked with it, the only fault I can find with this novel its that the traduction is a bit off, but if you like novels like Cultivation Chat Group, it will definitelly hit with you.

Moreover, I should mention that if you compare it against other xinxia novels, you will find that this novel is pretty realistic and the actions/story makes sense.

9/10 Its great comedy but also pretty good cultivation novel while most cultivators here are different from normal ones but if you think about it its logical, comedy is great there are few chapters where I couldnt stop laughing entire chapter. While I feel there is too much stuff happening like they go from one to another thing MC is the most talented person so even a litle timeskip is enough for him to jump realms plus if he kept jumping realms there wouldnt be much content so its great... more>> like this. Both Comedy and Realism are great and make you think wait a minute why didnt I think about that a lot. Comedy is similar to Losing Money to become Tycoon and few other novels like that I suggest reading more chapters cause first few might not be best cause they need to introduce the world and stuff but there is comedy. <<less

It's funny at the start, but the character living in MC's head is really annoying. There's always a bunch of filler chapters between the interesting plot parts.

Romance: none, although some jokes about arranged marriages are made.

Dropped because I got bored of reading filler.

For sure a novel writing style compared to typical mass produced murim / xianxia novels. It attempts to break and avoid cliches. It has tries to have funny plot and writing, though some of this seems to be lost in translation. I think it's worth a try to read.

I however dropped this as I've read too much Martial arts novels and couldn't remember the story really anymore after taking a month break

I find this story pretty funny so far and somewhat reminds me of “Ascending, do not disturb”. The MC has “unconventional” thinking that makes the story entertaining, and all of the characters have their own quirks but none are annoying. All in all, this is a great story if you’re looking for a light hearted cultivation story.

Not bad. At first the novel struggled to get a balance of slapstick comedy and serious cultivation, but it settled down, or I got used to it, and I enjoyed it.

There are some hint of romantic attraction, but no real romance, much less anything explicit. Since it's a comedy, one of the recurring motifs is how enlightened the modern society, or at least the Xia Dynasty is. Ghosts have rights, cultivators assaulting weaklings and "tr*sh" are arrested and prosecuted, and formerly forbidden techniques have disclaimers. Even some of the bitter... more>> enemies get imprisoned in relatively good conditions and can get time off for good behavior.

The main conflict gets resolved by the end, and overall pacing is not bad -- a decent mixture of fights, exploration, cultivation, and political intrigue. The comedic elements continue, and the author periodically uses short narration to describe improbable developments like the MC stumbling into one plot or secret quest one after another.

Overall, it's a nice comedy. There is a potentially interesting backstory for the MC before his tansmigration, but it's described in a short summary.

Overall, an enjoyable novel, somewhat comparable in tone to "Cultivating, Do Not Disturb!", although with a guy protagonist, almost no romance, and lots of horseplay between friends, and friendly rivals.

One lack is missing resolution of some romantic tension, but an explicit section dealing with relationships would be inconsistent with the story. <<less

Top quality stuff. Been a while since I last read such an interesting novel.

The entire novel is essentially a parody of multiple cultivation novel tropes, with comical explanations to them.

I also like the fact that the novel has so many likeable characters and the fact that the MC rarely travels alone in his journeys.
