Tian Tian is a salesperson at a supply and marketing cooperative in a small town in Guangdong Province.

She’s heard that in the 1960s and 70s, this was a golden rice bowl job.

But by the time she started working in the 1980s, the job feels pretty useless.

Every day she hears about someone’s son or daughter heading off to Shenzhen or Guangzhou to work and make big money.

Finally, Tian Tian decides to take an unpaid leave of absence, brings her savings of 250 yuan, and heads to Shenzhen to find work.

Quick-witted and clever, Tian Tian soon finds her footing in Shenzhen and gets to know quite a few people.

Then, an old lady tries to sell her two mu of worthless vegetable land.

At the time, Tian Tian thinks to herself: she came here to work and get rich. What would she do with a plot of land?

She turns down the land and continues working her tail off, thrilled whenever she makes a few hundred yuan a month.

Years pass. Now in her mid-thirties, Tian Tian is still working. Meanwhile, on that very plot of land, high-rise buildings have gone up.

She heard the landlord got rich off those buildings.

Tian Tian feels deep regret. Especially after working for ten years, she finally realizes — you really can’t get rich just by working.

Then, she dies in an accident.

In her final moment, Tian Tian thinks: if she could have another chance, she would never let that plot of land slip away.

And then… Tian Tian is reborn.
