Love the story, love the MC, hate the old man.

However, that last part isn't entirely accurate.

Spoiler

As you might've guessed, this novel is about a reincarnated man who can see dead people. One day, as he was working, he saw an old man-the previous strongest in the world (now dead) -who quickly learns of the MC's ability to see him and begins pestering him.

For people familiar with this genre, that's pretty standard.

Now, as for why I don't like the old man. It's not that I dislike his character, as he's pretty great despite my general dislike for OP old men. I hate his position in the plot.

Without spoiling too much, the old man is essentially the plot. He's the story's direction, plot armor, strengths and weaknesses, setting (in a way), and more. He's everything. He IS the story. The old man's word is law. He's like the author's subcontractor. The MC, and everyone/everything else, is just a player in his game. Nothing else matters, and that's precisely the problem.

I may be exaggerating it a bit, but not by much because, without him, the story would be nothing. It'd just be about an average, untalented, somewhat fearful guy who could see ghosts in murim.

What's more disappointing is the fact this could've all been avoided if the old man wasn't so "intelligent" (in other words, the author d**k riding him). If the old man and the MC had a more equal relationship, I think the quality of the novel would rise another notch, but the MC is essentially forced to do his bidding (because plot) if he doesn't want to die.

What I think is even more ridiculous is that, even in the face of such threats, and against such a powerhouse of a man, the MC still holds the upper hand. He just doesn't even think to play his cards. Rather, I don't think he knows he has any. Which, in my eyes, doesn't fit the MC's character. He's an intelligent, cunning, fearful man who knows his place and can read other people quite well. But, it's like he loses half his IQ whenever he's dealing with the old man.

To the old man, the MC's value is immeasurable. He's the only one in the world capable of avenging him, of resolving past regrets, and passing on his techniques. That right there is a huge card as it's not like the old man can just take over his body permanently. Sure, he can threaten the MC, even possess him temporarily, but ultimately, it's a bluff. And the MC should know it's a bluff, having been entangled with ghosts for decades now.

Yet, even though he complains and grumbles, the MC takes a passive, submissive stance towards the old man, doing pretty much everything he says, even when he can turn everything upside down.

Sure, he would definitely get caught up in a bunch of nonsense because of the old man, but he can at least make his stance clear. That he won't be manipulated.

But he doesn't. So, we get a story where the direction is based on the old man's whims. Which, might I add, aren't all that interesting.

You'll learn very quickly that he has some unresolved feelings (as expected of a vengeful spirit), particularly of the betrayal/revenge kind, as well as the "clean up my poorly managed Sect" kind. It's not surprising, it's not fun, it's not unique, and things pretty much go about as you'd expect in a Murim novel.

It could've been great, but the MC just gets dragged along and forced to participate in the plot, instead of taking an active role in pretty much anything. No matter how in control he seems, it's all a facade. Every situation is forced; he has no choice but to participate. And I mean that literally.

Hopefully, this changes as he gets stronger, but I truly believe there shouldn't be a need to wait.

In my opinion, the author has taken a 4.5/5 story and nuked it down to something that can't even keep up with average, mediocre martial arts novels.

If you can look past all that, then you'll find the rest of the novel to be rather enjoyable, but in my opinion, the more you like the characters, the more disappointing the plot becomes.

So I read other reviews and I feel like u guys are being a little too judgmental.I’m not saying your opinions are wrong it’s just that in my opinion the novel is great. So... I’ll just tell you why I feel it’s a great read.

  • First of all, I find it enjoyable how the novel has a lot of dialogue between characters, it makes you feel the connection between characters may they be good or evil.I also find it funny to some extent. So in general, the dialogue make the characters more expressive
  • Secondly, the main character may seem like he is just passive and just follows what the old man tells him to do but, he actual thinks things through and weighs them in to see which choice is the best to one to choose.
    Spoiler

You might think the MC is passive cuz the old man and others tell what to do but in the types of situations its the best course of action for him.

    [collapse]
  • Also I like that the old man and the MC are some what dependent on eachother, with the MC being a little more dependent on the old man due to his circumstances. It may seem like tge old man is attached to the MC and trying to use him, but the old man doesn’t really care if the MC lives or dies. (or you could say he lets the MC struggle to get things done and survive by his on skill) of course he teaches some useful techniques and finds out that the MC is a prodigy (U may call it plot armor but I personally think it’s necessary as he has to pretend to be the old man’s student and he needs the martial arts as actual proof.)
Remember before reading novel that its called ‘The greatest in the world is dead’ for a reason. If you read the novel without thinking that the person who is called the greatest in the world (Aka the old man) isn’t going to play a major role in the novel then you’re an idiot (and a gigantic one at that).

Since the transltions have not gone that far I’ve only reached chapter 100 but, its pretty clear where the plot is heading.
Spoiler

In my opinion there are probably gonna look out who or what killed the old man and take them down or something similar. If not I trust the author write some interesting and unique instead.

Updated Review

I liked this novel—a lot. The story had a strong hook, an interesting character dynamic, and a world that felt alive. One of the biggest highlights was the relationship between Yu Chun-gil (the so-called "world's greatest") and the MC. Their back-and-forth was some of the best character interaction I've read in a while. It had me laughing, and I was fully engaged.

The dialogue could be a hit-or-miss for some, but I personally enjoyed it. Some might find it drags at times, but I think it adds to the character... more>> depth. There were slower moments, sure, but they were balanced out by strong interactions and humor. The side characters also felt fleshed out and contributed to the story rather than being filler.

Translation-wise, there were some pronoun mix-ups and character name confusions that broke immersion, but it was manageable. The translator, XLordFifth, is responsive and actively fixes mistakes, which is always a plus.

Now, here's where things took a turn. Initially, one of the biggest positives for me was the lack of romance or harem. I even mentioned in my original review how much I appreciated that. Over 100 chapters in, I started getting hints of romance creeping in. That alone wouldn't have been a deal-breaker if it had been tagged, giving me a heads-up on what to expect. I don't have a problem with romance—I've read romance stories that I've seriously enjoyed. But when the translator confirmed there's a high chance of harem, that was the real issue for me. That's something I absolutely avoid. Appreciate the translator for letting me know upfront, though. They were cool about it—definitely check out their other works. They're bangers!

That's where I have to drop it. If harem doesn't bother you, you'll probably still enjoy this, but for me, it's disappointing to invest so much time into a story only to have it shift into something I wasn't expecting. If the tags had been accurate, I wouldn't have started it in the first place.

I still think it's a solid read up to a point, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2. But if you're like me and want to know upfront what you're getting into, just be aware—this might not be the story you think it is. <<less

My actual rating is 7.5/10

If you're familiar with the author's other work, Childhood Friend of the Zenith, you'll be quick to notice the huge similarities in world building and side characters.

Very minor spoiler below:

Spoiler

Clans that received a lot of attention from CFOTZ (ex, Mt. Hua, Tang, Nangumg) continue to be highlighted in this novel as well. Additionally, how certain characters meet (ex. Mc's sister) are also very similar

[collapse]

These were just a couple so SEVERAL similarities between the 2 novels. I honestly didn't care at all, but it may put off other readers.

However, there are a fair amount of differences as well. First and foremost, the MC is actually smart in this novel (or at least that's how he's meant to be portrayed). He is able to unravel enemy schemes and come up with his own. There are a fair amount of times where it feels like he intelligence is forced, but I'd say it was overall done pretty well. As another review said, it might seem like mc's getting dragged by the sword saint at first, but you'll soon notice that MC has his own agenda.

Second, this story isn't tied down by romance. Honestly, if you removed the romance and harem elements from this novel, there wouldn't be significant changes to the story unlike CFOTZ. All the romantic interests are relevant for one or two scenes (with the debatable exception of one girl) and then pretty much forgotten. If you're looking for romance and harem, this is not the novel for you. I did find this choice enjoyable though as it allowed the plot to progress much faster.

Third, Even though romantic interests are lacking, there are still interesting side characters. There's the ghost (?) of the sword saint whose entertaining every time he's in the spotlight. Then there's Mc's guy friends and sect leaders (I would list them, but I lowkey can't remember non-English names).

Fourth, fight scenes are hyped even if you know who the winner is going to be. Powerups feel (most of them at least) feel well earned and not completely random.

Finally, there's a sense of mystery lingering through the story, and you learn that many things established at the start of the start aren't as simple as they seem.

(Major spoilers below so read at your own risk)

Spoiler

You initially think that mc's dad and bother are deadbeats, but it's more or less a guise for something more sinister. You're also lead to wonder why MC was so weak at the start of the story considering his talents. Additionally, there's several hints indicating that the sword saint has a hidden agenda.

[collapse]

I liked this story, but there's a very good reason why I couldn't give this a rating higher that 7.5.

The main thing comes down to the writing rather than the plot or characters.

I swear, the author treats the readers like we are incapable of understanding anything on our own. Everything, every single even, twist, turn, needs to be explained in gruesome detail. And more often than not, multiple times. MC does something smart that even a kindergardener can understand? Great, let's spend a whole chapter explaining it and let's spend another chapter reexplaining in the future.

Sometimes, the author reiterates the exact same thing for literally no reason besides to yap. You think I'm exaggerating? I pulled up a genuinely random chapter and immediately say these lines:

Spoiler

"Where is Bang Sung-Yun?"

Do Hyung's question widened his eyes.

Right. In the heat of battle, he had forgotten.

'Right... where did Young master Bang go?'

Bang Sung-Yun, who had first discovered this situation, where did he go?

[collapse]

To clarify, this is all one continuous snippet of text (you can find this at the top of chapter 63 if you want to verify)

How is this an actual piece of text?? The author reiterated the same question 3 times for absolutely no reason. This kind of thing happens multiple times in every single chapter without exaggeration.

Also, the author's writing style is SOOOO repetitive. At least 10% of the chapters end with the mention of a person, sect, or event (ex. MC is told that he needs to meet a person from the mount hua sect and then the chapter ends). The next chapter will will undoubtably start like this:

Mount Hua.

What is Mount Hua?

It is the greatest sect in the world.... pointless exposition that was already repeated in the past.

This is just one of several patterns you'll continuously notice from this story. Another one is that MC does something clever. An elder asks MC why he did it. MC tells them that they already know why he did it. Then MC and elder both go "...". Then elder asks why the MC thinks how he knows. MC explains that. Then MC answers the original question.

The story would be far more enjoyable without these far too common patterns. I genuinely don't understand how the writing can be so bad and unoriginal. If the author removed all the pointless dialogue and completely unnecessary explanations, he could easily cut off 25% of the text without any determent to the story.

If I ever drop this story, it will be due to how the story is conveyed rather than the actual characters or plot.

There are a couple other issues with characters and plot, but they are only further highlighted by the previous issues.

It honestly makes my so sad that this story could have easily been an 8/10+ if these simple mistakes were fixed.

These are very critical flaws, and it is fair to avoid this book because of them. But if you're able to ignore them, then this book will definitely be worth your time. I enjoyed this book far more than CFOTZ.

The translations by Jade scrolls is also pretty good, so don't hesitate if that's a worry. <<less

For the author, plot is great, starting is exceptionally good but after a time things become boring, especially conversations between characters seems stretched far too much then needed and ultimately making story move slowly. Too many short conversations between characters not needed is what I think. For some time things could move neutrally rather every sentence should be funny mindset is a buzz off.. It's my personal opinion author has whole right to agree or not. Btwn keep the good work
