I built an empire and worked myself to death — literally.

Then I woke up a hundred years later, only to find out there’s been no emperor since.

……And they want me to do it again?

TL;DR - So far it's been pretty good.

For potential readers: this novel had the 'harem' tag on it on the TL site, but here at NU there isn't any harem tag. It's not yet certain if it's going to go that route, but it probably is considering:

Spoiler

The MC had around 8 wives during his reign, and there seems to be two more women that show interest in him in this life.

[collapse]

But even so, there are plenty more characters in this novel that aren't just the women that may or may not become part of his harem.

First you have his family: his father and brother who, though at first suspect, become loyal supporters once he proves himself.

Next there are his children, who he loves dearly and are probably the only things that are keeping him from unironically leaving the empire he created to go off into the countryside (That and the fact that this is his empire that he cultivated and strived to make and its currently being torn to shreds, so he's trying to mend it for the sake of peace)

And lastly he has his new subjects who he treats as his family themselves. There are a few wholesome scenes with the MC, his family, and his subjects just chilling and eating out.

The MC himself is pretty strong, but he's not as strong as he was during his time as the emperor. His personality is that of a casual old man seeking retirement and just wanting to relax with his family, plus behaving like a divorced dad who hates his exs' guts but still wants to see his children.

He isn't squeamish when it comes to women; he has married 8 times, after all. And he's thoroughly tired of the whole marriage stuff. He's also very ruthless when it comes to his enemies, for example:

Spoiler

One time when he was out with his buddies just hanging around and eating, some arrogant elf younglings came up to him and started trying to order him, a human, around. He thoroughly beat them up, and it was very satisfying.

[collapse]

Not only ruthless, he is very perceptive, being able to understand the intentions and plans of others with a few glances and words, and he also has the cunning of a snake, able to manipulate his way into all sorts of advantageous deals. It really shows just how capable he is and why everyone saw him as an admirable figure back when he was emperor.

Spoiler

As for his wives, it would seem that, although he hates (?) them, and they might hate him too, its implied that they really did care and love him, at least in the past.

Here's a quick recap summary of the story I've seen so far:

Spoiler

After the emperor's death 100 years later, he reincarnates into the youngest son of one of the 12 human families that were assigned as the houses that are candidates to be the next emperor. At first, he thinks things are stable in the empire, but after a visit from the child of Burzlow (or whatever his name was) to try and take his fiancee away, he quickly realizes things are very wrong beneath the surface. Starting with the so-called 'Empire Liberation Force' trying to destabilize things and being the true masterminds behind the whole 'Burzlow takes his fiancee' thing (which was actually a ploy to destroy both families and cause chaos in the land), and the non-human races all vying to control the throne, and corruption and tyranny running rampant across all the forces in the empire. Suffice to say, things are absolutely FUBAR, and what's worse is that his children are getting involved by it. His dear children are being used by their races and their own mothers as sacrifices and bait. Of course, the MC, being a responsible parent, decides to step in and protect them, as well as protecting his new family. He's going to set the empire straight, even if it means beating each and every single one of those ministers again and taking care of the rebels by himself.

[collapse]

If you like: grumpy old men returning from retirement to clean up the mess that others made after him and thoroughly discipline them along the way, actually healthy family relationships, powerful MCs that aren't wimps when it comes to doing what they have to do, funny banter, an MC that's an actual leader, then read this novel. <<less
