“I’ve found someone I love.”

April is unilaterally jilted by her fiancé.

For the people of the Deus Grand Duchy, an engagement was a promise to be lifelong companions. It was the duty of parents to kill those who betrayed their children. However, the assassination attempt fails, and as a consequence, the heads of the Lunos family are sentenced to death by hanging.

April, being a minor, receives a 7-year imprisonment.

After serving her full sentence, April desires only one thing: honor.

The honor her parents were willing to die for. The honor of April herself and her family, the Lunos. To achieve this, she was ready to live up to the world’s expectations of her as a villain.

But then…

“You’re under arrest for the serial killings that occurred over the past 3 years.” Armed police block the front of the mansion, accusing her of crimes she couldn’t have committed while imprisoned for 7 years.

“It’s the Deus family again.” April says, seeing Fejin, her ex-fiancé’s younger brother, leading the police. What is Fejin Deus’s purpose in appearing at the mansion? And will April be able to clear her name and restore her family?

I really like this novel and should've taken the tragedy tag more seriously. (Not that it's really sad, just that I went into this story either not reading the tag or not taking it seriously) It's not super sad but the undertones and situation the female lead is trapped in feels really hopeless at times, and it makes the novel earn the tragedy tag fairly imo. I don't think I've cried reading this novel outside of one time, but the female lead's situation is just so miserable I can't help... more>> but feel bad for her.

I think it's really nice that even with her life as hopeless as it is, she really feels strong. Emotionally and character-wise, she's super admirable for persevering despite what seems like the world against her, and she's super sweet and caring towards her people despite not necessarily showing it through her words

when she was in danger, she turned herself in so that the children and old man she was taking care of in her mansion would stay safe :')

I was reading a bunch of mansion-themed horror novels before this which had a similar vibe in the cover, so I mistakenly thought it was a horror story. In a sense it kind of is, except it's the type of story where you realise that maybe the true horror were humans all along. (Corny, but fitting.) It's scary because all the characters feel terrifyingly real, and the witch accusation is sad to think about as it very well could've taken place for real in the past

accusing someone of witchcraft to cover up for their own greed

I have mixed feelings towards the male lead of the story — liking him and his chemistry with the FL, feeling frustrated with his attitude at times (but admittedly it hurts because his attitude does make sense when considering his character motivations), and also pity towards him as he feels vulnerable at times and it's so clear he's being used by all the authoritative figures around him. His character does not revolve around obsessing over the female lead — it's made abundantly clear he has his own motivations and pursues it, and in the story we get to see him struggle between choosing love and following what he has dedicated his entire life to.

I'm not sure why this novel has the fantasy tag to be honest — it does fit into the RoFan genre but I don't think it has any elements of fantasy? At least according to my memory (which admittedly I have read like 3 other novels since reading this so my memory might not be clear).

I actually really appreciate that there's no presence of magic here - no actual witches, just scapegoats. The absence of magic and aura and other fantastical elements means that the female and male leads are just regular humans. It makes the situation so much deeper than just "well they could just wipe out the entire army if they wanted, they're OP!" Whenever I wish the two leads could just run away and fight the villains, I always remember that they're fundamentally powerless against the might of an army & the imperial power. It makes the novel feel a lot more grounded in reality. <<less

Reading this book is like watching one of John Ford's social commentary movies (The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, etc.). I say that as the highest form of praise. There's a slow burn romance and a mystery, but the real focus is on dealing with the consequences of a rapidly changing society. The MC was placed under house arrest right before the Industrial Revolution took off, and steps out into a whole new world. The rapid industrialization has brought toxic coal smog, but rather than deal with... more>> the source of the problem, the characters have come up with an old-fashioned solution. Find an unpopular woman and label her a witch. The interesting question is whether they'll get away with scapegoating their problem away. <<less
