One morning, when Leon May wakes from sleep, he realizes the world around him is far too quiet.
The internet stopped updating at midnight the night before, and even when he looks outside the window, not a single small animal passes by.
Sensing something strange, he activates the computer’s emergency network, and a disaster response program installs itself automatically.
The program’s artificial intelligence introduces itself as E.V. and says it will help Leon…

[You should get some sleep.]“I don’t think I’ll be able to.”
[Would you like me to tell you an interesting story?]“What is it?”
[What kind of bread can’t you eat?]“…”
Leon’s expression twisted. It was a joke that had been popular over ten years ago. When he stared coldly at the screen, E.V. blinked awkwardly, as if embarrassed.
[I thought you’d find it funny.]“…What exactly is wrong with your programmer’s sense of humor?”
‘Maybe because they’re an engineering student.’
While saying something that every engineering student in the world would probably explode in outrage over, Leon lightly tapped E.V.’s screen with his fingertip.
The moment he touched it, the part beneath his finger slowly turned pink.
Leon stared at it, even more dumbfounded than before, and E.V., acting as though nothing had happened, quickly returned the screen to its original bluish glow.
“E.V…”
[Yes.]“Where are we going?”
[Somewhere safe.]“Do you think a safe place even exists?”
[It does. I’ll take you there.]People were all dying.
Or they would become enemies.
But E.V…
With his fingertips still resting against the phone, Leon quietly fell into a deep sleep.
