Yuwen Qing is the last surviving bloodline of the Yuwen family, one of the four great clans of Bai Sheng. Having been raised as a boy since childhood, her grandmother—fearing further tragedy, demanded she abandon martial arts for literature. Unexpectedly, she placed first in the imperial examinations, and at the celebratory banquet, the Emperor personally appointed her as the consort of the Grand Princess.

The imperial edict felt like a bolt of lightning, leaving Yuwen Qing utterly petrified. Who was this Grand Princess? She was a woman of immense power who dominated the court, a person even the Emperor feared. If she were to discover Yuwen Qing’s true identity, her life would be forfeit in an instant.

Yuwen Qing only wanted to survive, to keep her head down.

On their wedding night, with hands trembling like a sieve, she lifted the Grand Princess’s veil. Xiao Weilan looked bright, flamboyant, and as beautiful yet poisonous as a poppy.

“Your Highness,” Yuwen Qing stammered, “the hour is late. Please, get some rest. I shall sleep outside, lest I pass my illness on to you.”

Having once witnessed her cut down an enemy commander with a single spear, Xiao Weilan narrowed her phoenix eyes, watching the performance with keen interest. “It is our wedding night, Consort. Are you certain you want to leave this Princess all alone?”

Yuwen Qing suppressed her overwhelming fear. Caught between the risk to her life and the weight of the command, she finally scrambled onto the bed with trembling limbs, curling up in the corner and shutting her eyes tight.

“Does the Consort intend to just sleep like this?” Xiao Weilan arched an eyebrow, her tone rising with an undercurrent of danger.

For some reason, Yuwen Qing detected a thick sense of threat in those words and was on the verge of tears. She was a woman, after all what exactly was she expected to do? This was a plight far worse than death.

Xiao Weilan would not allow it. Looking down at her, she teased Yuwen Qing like one would a puppy. Once bored, she simply made the “puppy” sleep on the floor. After all, the consort was hardy enough, and if she fell ill, it would save the Princess the trouble of having to keep up pretenses a perfect solution, in her eyes.
