The Early Spring

Every woman probably goes through a period like this: ordinary, obedient, well-behaved, an anonymous person in the eyes of strangers, a dim star who is neither here nor there in his life.

But that’s just a phase. Later, she shines like the sun—dazzling, brilliant—but she no longer loves you.

Standing in the icy snow of the northern lands, Luan Nian’s hair and eyebrows are frosted with cold. His breath turns into vapor as he speaks: “Shang Zhitao, let’s start over from scratch? From the moment we first met.”

A very emotionally invested story. The first half has a melancholic undertone. Lots of tears shed. It has a seemingly unremarkable FL who is untalented, humble but kind and with great resolves to constantly improve herself. Unfortunately she got trapped in an unequal love for 6 years.

ML is a prodigy, with superior intelligence but a blunt or rather poisonous mouth and n unbiased heart. It takes him a very long time to see into his own heart.

I felt sorry for the FL for being so humble in love but never... more>> felt annoyed, as she loved with all her heart. Loved how she shone through each phase of her life.

The most heartwarming is their friendship and it's also most heartwrenching.

I loved the story, made possible by an excellent translation. Would like loveeattea to pick up the other 2 stories from this series. <<less

This novel is a fascinating read. The male lead (ML) is 'blunt', which, in this case, is just another way of saying he’s rude and emotionally unavailable. There's nothing romantic about his demeanor; he's harsh and unsupportive. The female lead (FL), however, is deeply in love and, unfortunately, quite spineless when it comes to him, which is why their relationship drags on for years.

It's a slow burn, with both leads portrayed as deeply human and morally grey. The story doesn't offer fluffy romance or feel-good vibes, but it does provide... more>> a compelling narrative. The translation is excellent, and the side characters are incredibly well-written and engaging. One of the things I appreciated most was that the FL knew the ML was unreliable and emotionally stunted, but she had a strong circle of friends who became her found family.

A lot of the conflict could have been avoided if the ML was simply kinder, more communicative, and emotionally supportive. Honestly, I think the story would have worked just as well... maybe even better... without the ML entirely.

Still, I binge-read this. It’s not a bad novel at all. If you’re looking for character development and slow, realistic growth rather than romantic fluff, this is worth reading. It’s a story about change, about flawed people, and about the strength of friendships that feel like home.

Rating: High, for the storyline, translation, and the richness of side characters. <<less

The translation was great, the story.... ML is the typical jerk with a hidden soft side. Completely toxic relationship but the FL kept on making excuses or they both figure things out.

I don't like how the FL mindset is just "I can fix him" and then going "there is no fixing this" to "yeah, he is fixable".

Girl.... Noooo, leave!

He only knew that he wanted her when he can't have her anymore. So he start to fix himself, but it is years after being a jerk...

Spoiler

It was a on again, off again kind of relationship throughout. She left on a solo trip, met this guy that was the opposite of the ML but the author killed him off (not literally) by making him a jerk out of the blue. So I thought it was getting better, she realised her stubbornness and decided to make a clear break, left him and cut all ties. I was hoping that she can figure out her own self worth, go home to her hometown, start a business and met someone that is the opposite of ML, but the ML chased her and they got back together...

The writing and translation are good. However, I personally have a bone to pick with the characters—especially MC. I wish she had more backbone and had given ML a bigger lesson.

Spoiler

Its about inappropriate office FWB. ML said himself, "he had never been a good person. He lacked empathy and hated complications. He was, through and through, an extremely selfish, refined egoist."

Their "rs" dragged on for a long time until MC realized her career was at stake and decided to leave. But then, after a single confession, she latched back on like, gurl. Imo, MCs weak. ML is a good boss but I cant even say he's a sh*t bf cuz he was clear from the start. But then he said

Another spoiler:

"I first fell for you the moment I opened the café door and saw you sitting there." so does it mean like even before FWB started? ML knew her feeling and MC can't confess until she can accept the potential loss. But anyways this matches back to what he said about himself so how do I even blame the guy.

As for the MC, I know ppl who've been in that type of "rs", and it really is just like that. I can understand to an extent but can't fully relate, so I won't judge too much on it.

This is not about young and innocent love story. It's inappropriate and messy. That's how I was left feeling after reading it. A bad novel? Not really. It's just a different cup of tea.

Also I've been in an office romance with boss before thats why im complaining MC should have more back bone. I might be bias here lol. So make your own judgement.

I love this novel very much. One of my favorite!

I get that some wouldn't like the ML or the FL characters but for me it's perfect. I especially love the part where they travels, i've been to Dali before so I somehow can picture out.

After reading this, makes me want to travel Tibet more.

Thank you for the translations.

It is honestly a good novel, I've never binged a translated chinese novel so hard until this one— I feel like the translators did a very good job. And I honestly think that the book is great from a writing perspective, the romance? Not so much, I enjoy the fact that it is realistic & has depth as a book, but I will not lie here and say that I "liked" the male MC, he's rude & honestly outside their intimate life— he's not the most best significant other, ... more>>

the fact that they became fwb for so long until they actually started dating — (which btw, the dynamic didn't change that I thought they were still fwb) cheesed me off. Its the first time that I wished that she had ended up with someone else, like her male roommate that she deeply admired whom she always said gave her stability.. but that didn't really go anywhere either... so yeah.. every time she tried to end it, I thought that i'd be great for more character development for them both— but they'd always fall back to the old same patterns.

It definitely felt exhausting to a point, but I still enjoy the novel for what it is though! I just wished their character had more development like especially much later in the book.

as the author mentioned in the first author's note— this isnt a romance story, it depicts the working life of girls in a big city, so for what it is it's a well written online novel. <<less
