In the third year of Yifeng, the illegitimate daughter of the Ningyang Marquis’ household entered the palace.

Entering the palace is like stepping into an unfathomable sea; the only rule is to never fall in love.

Ning Shuyan was well aware of this. What she sought were wealth, power, and the Emperor’s favor. Over three years, she planned meticulously, captivating the Emperor’s attention and climbing from the rank of Cairen to Noble Consort.

The harem whispered that the Emperor’s affection for women was dictated by utility and interest. When Xiao Yu first met her, he was intrigued by this woman. He said, “I didn’t expect her to have such beauty.” Everyone claimed that his interest in her was merely fleeting. Yet, that fleeting interest turned into a lifetime of favor for Ning Shuyan.

Xiao Yu later admitted: At first, he was drawn to her looks, then captivated by her alluring charm.

Unexpectedly, a lifetime passed, and no matter how much he looked at her, he never grew tired.

To him, she was gentle and enchanting, pure and kind, and deeply devoted to him. Even years later, she remained unchanged in his heart, as radiant as ever, with his love for her growing stronger with time.

What a beautiful novel. I thought the number of chapters would deter me but I kept on reading because the story development was just so good. I can't add any more to what has already been said by other commenters, other than ML and FL had such a beautiful relationship that I wanted to keep reading more extras. In a few years, I'll probably re-read this again to re-live the feelings.

This was so much different from what I thought. After reading so many historical harem romances, the interaction and dedication of ML to FL grew on me.

  • Xiao Yu: Emperor with low EQ, and who restrains his indulgence with himself.
Spoiler

You can see his growth ij character here: At the moment, the woman in front of him seemed to be really different. She could empathize with him, had many interesting ideas, and had a good temper. He just hoped that she would not change. Although he, as the emperor, could not fall in love with a woman, he was willing to pamper a woman forever. However, later this type of thinking changed to: "I didn't understand the love between men and women before, but now I understand it, and I don't want to leave any regrets. I just hope that my wife is the one I love in my heart, and we can be buried in the same tomb even after death."

[collapse]

  • Ning Shuyan: I admired her resolute decisions and careful planning. I adored her character development.
Spoiler

She went from diminishing her perception of the Emperor to truly caring for him. If... he was not an emperor, if he was just a prince, she might also be willing to give him a little bit of her true heart.

This thought came to her mind spontaneously, but when Ning Shuyan's eyes fell on the dragon pattern on his hair crown, her heart suddenly turned cold.

Her fingertips tightly grasped his clothes.

There is no "if" in this world. He is destined to be the emperor and the most ruthless or amorous person in the world.

Once you fall in love, you will lose miserably.

[collapse]

There was conspiracy in the harem battle, true sisterhood, childcare, filial piety. It was a pleasant reading overall. I wasn't expecting true romance, so I was possitively astonished and surprised to find it here.

Ah, classic harem scheming!

I’m really enjoying this so far. The main character is sympathetic and interesting to follow, though her occasionally mentioned background as a transmigrator seems like an afterthought so far. As of this review, we’re still at early stages, so the schemes are relatively simple and it’s not clear whether the Emperor is “love interest” or “final boss, ” but the book is already showing an interesting twist with the MC, despite herself, befriending an early villain - I’m enjoying their relationship and hoping the death flags are... more>> red herrings.

Recommended so far to harem drama fans! <<less

This everything you'll expect from a good palace intrigue novel and more! Well written, a tad too long for my liking, but all the loose ends were tightened adequately.

The schemes, the calculations, the ruthlessness! Palace intrigue on point!

Spoiler

I really didn't expect Chen meiren to end up being so close to Ning Shuyan, so much so that even the emperor became jealous of their relationship

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also didn't expect the queen to pull a big one and straight up poison the emperor! She really didn't know how to scheme, did she?

[collapse]

Our FL :
Spoiler

Honestly, I was expecting the FL to be like the TJOAIC FL but she was a bit... too sincere like she felt guilty from time to time, for not sincerely loving the emperor, and she actually fell in love with him, when he promised not to hold another concubine selection and even abolished most of the concubines after he was bedridden from poison and was not expected to survive

[collapse]

ML:
Spoiler

He is a very sentimental and sincere type of a person, even as an emperor, his schemes were not that deep, as compared to other novel's emperors. From the way he remembered his mother, to the way he treated his brothers, it was clear that getting the throne was his way to survive in the imperial harem and fulfill his mother's expectations of him. He unconsciously wanted sincere affection from his harem, and FL was the first one to give him that experience, she treated him as her husband, not as her monarch and let the mighty emperor feel the pleasure of being an ordinary family man. I feel like, in alternate universe, he would have been that famous Wangye who only had his Wangfei in his harem. So, no surprise, the emperor is as whipped as frosting on a cake, when it comes the FL, by the end of the book

[collapse]

Things that could have been better:

Spoiler

The ending seemed a bit rushed, ngl, the empress' scheme was impulsive, and even though she wasn't the sharpest sword in the armory, the level of recklessness was disappointing. If I was the empress, I would have poisoned the emperor in a way that it doesn't trace back to me, or framed FL as a demon consort, so the emperor is constantly under pressure of the court. I never would have done the butterfly scheme, and done so at such an inopportune time.

Also, Shen Cainu's character arc was unsatisfying. She has so much potential, she could've served as a contrast to the emperor, as he realized that he loved only FL, even if there was another woman who loved him sincerely. Her ending was forced too.

The last 60 chapters, the emperor became a simp, after he realized his love and almost lost FL a couple times, becoming very indulgent. He should have slowly unraveled the true depth of NSY feelings for him, have a moment of heartbreak, realize that he loved her no matter what, and be determined to make her fall for him by offering lifelong sincerity. Also, things we a little too smooth for NSY and she never truly suffered a loss, so that was a bit unrealistic.

[collapse]

In conclusion, this an absolute gem of a book, not TJOAIC type, but not a fake one either. A semi-precious stone, that deserves occasional re-read and affection. I expect great books from this author, in a few years. <<less

Another harem strategy novel with MC who came from modern world and utilized all her knowledge about seducing man to capture the emperor's heart. All her actions were the result from careful calculation and ML fell hard into her act.

Spoiler

MC later also fell in love with ML for real but at that time, ML already devoted to only her so she wouldn't be heartbroken by watching ML favored other woman.

[collapse]

Also, like other harem novel, this story was also full of scheming and MC repeatedly almost lost her life since she was seen as a threat by other concubines. The threat only ended after MC became the empress which happened near the end of the story. <<less

i never expected this novel to be this good. I usually can’t stand it when the male lead has a harem and actively engages with his concubines and consorts (though I know it’s “natural” since he’s the emperor), so I tend to skip stories like that. But for this one, I gave it a try—and actually learned to love it.

what drew me in first was shuyan. She’s so smart and realistic: she knows an emperor could never love just one woman, so everything she does is for her own survival.... more>> She doesn’t care about gaining favor; she only wants a decent life within the harem. But because she’s targeted by others, she’s not some passive goodie who never fights back—she knows how to defend herself and get revenge if needed. I really love women like that. She realizes she can only live peacefully if she gains power and “levels up” (especially after having a child).

what’s even better is that the male lead falls for her first, and HARD.

as what I said, shuyan believes no man could ever love just one woman. So I really love that she holds on to that mindset even when her heart wavers sometimes because of how the ML is treating her now. I also love that she only treats the ML, almost at the end of the story, sincerely. It's just for my own satisfaction, honestly, since I really don't like ML with harems, though I like the story.

you can see the sincerity and love when he starts to change, because everything he does for ning shuyan shows his growth (as the ML.) you can feel his effort. And after he falls for shuyan, his eyes and heart are COMPLETELY belongs for "his yanyan." my favorite moment of them is yulang carrying shuyan on his back, even when they were old.

another thing I adore in this story is the sisterhood between cheng yin and shuyan-they're such a joy, and their bond is just beautiful. I love that not everyone in the harem, like how other authors like to write their story, is bad person. Plus, the redemption of the eldest prince. <<less

I almost didn't continue reading because the premise felt too similar to Imperial Concubine Is so Charming. The names even looked similar. It wasn't until I opened that novel minutes later and read the synopsis and reviews that I realized that was the one I had read, not this one. So I continued with relief.

The premise follows the synopsis. Once our FL steps into the imperial harem, the chaos begins. Schemes, miscarriages, battles for favor, mockery. You know the drill. The FL, like most FLs in this genre, is meticulous.... more>> I would be too. The man is for everyone, so you must stand out and stay in favor. The FL didn't go in with her heart. She went in with her head. Every move is planned and calculated to keep the emperor interested. Her strategy works. He becomes curious about her, then deeply favors her. Naturally, other consorts scheme against her, but she's sharp. She spots most plots from a distance and navigates the rest quickly. And when the emperor fell for her, ha... things shifted.

The ML is your typical emperor in these stories.

Spoiler

He's no virg*n and he's active nearly every night. Sometimes he visits the same woman multiple times in a row. Other times he rotates based on court politics or personal whim. You might not like him, but this genre requires setting aside modern perspectives. He's juggling court stability and using these relationships strategically. His connection with the FL starts as curiosity, evolves into pleasure, then intense favor, and eventually love. Their dynamic is fascinating. I genuinely laugh during their intimate scenes. Honestly, I wish there was more smut because I wanted to see just how flexible she was. 🔥 She clearly knew what she was doing. Early on, he's shocked when she reciprocates during intimacy. Other women were trained to just lie there without emotion. With the FL, though? Both of them actually enjoy it. This made me so happy for her because imagine being with a man repeatedly and getting zero pleasure. The other women don't even kiss him because he dislikes it. She's not some lifeless doll, though. As time passes, he showers her with more nighttime visits, lavish gifts, and promotions. You really see how his feelings move from phase to phase.

[collapse]

Now, the rest of the characters... a mix of entertaining, s*upid, and wicked.

Let's start with Rong Fei.

Spoiler

She is the biological mother of the first prince and one of the original harem members alongside the Empress and Zhang Fei. She's well-favored and has a son, the firstborn. If the empress remains childless and he proves worthy, he could become crown prince through birth order alone. Instead of nurturing him properly, Rong Fei wastes her energy making snide comments, punishing newcomers, and causing miscarriages among other consorts. Her fatal flaw? She's foolish. She schemes constantly but fails to train her son. The boy turns out incredibly dumb. She gets confined once for her actions, does it again, and that second offense destroys her completely.

[collapse]

Then there is Zhang Fei.

Spoiler

The supposed favorite of the emperor. Looking back, she was pretty much a pawn in the game. Initially, she enjoys favor despite having no children. I expected her downfall to come later. Her cover weakened after Rong exits the picture. Credit where it's due, she plans better and covers her tracks more carefully than Rong. Once Rong is gone, though, her schemes become visible. The person who would've shielded her is no longer there, and the FL's favor keeps rising.

Her karma hits brutally. She's infertile, and we later discover the Empress sabotaged her fertility medicine. Worse? The emperor knew and allowed it. This is why I almost pity her. The emperor had feelings for her once, but her powerful family background made her arrogant. He turned a blind eye to her behavior, mentally keeping score while still showing her affection. That same family background bred greed, though, and greed became THEIR undoing. When her family's ambitions are exposed and they fall from grace, all the emperor's overlooked grievances resurface. Her ending wasn't light. Painful and humiliating.

[collapse]

Prince Xuan was another headache.

Spoiler

Remember, he was the FL's original match before the late emperor reassigned her. The irony? Around chapter 50, we discover he already had a concubine and would soon take another. When they meet later, he becomes obsessed. He even takes a Cefei (secondary consort) who resembles the FL. I knew he'd cause trouble, and I appreciated that the author didn't resort to cheap tactics like drugging the FL to sleep with him. His downfall was tied to his pride in the late emperor's love for him, but the planning was not sound. He's always been competitive with his older brother and wanted what his brother had. During a celebration, though, he attempts assassination. The FL saves the emperor. The c*cky bastard isn't even worried about punishment because he produces an edict his greedy mother obtained (a whole nother matter I typed and deleted cos I was going on and on about him). It grants her empress dowager status and shields him from any punishment, even death. So despite the assassination attempt, the emperor can't execute him. 🙄 I loved the solution, though. Instead of death, he gets house arrest without servants. After two or three years of that isolation, he'll truly understand his punishment. Idiot!

[collapse]

The last individual I will talk about is the empress...

Spoiler

She shows her fangs early but lacks the intelligence to back up her hostility. Only her title as Empress protects her initially. Once that protection crumbles, she spirals out of control. She's a smiling snake who acts magnanimous while harboring vicious intentions. She can't even endure properly. Yes, she's the primary wife and the protagonist of her own story, but her position demands sacrifice. The ML doesn't even like her. Before the FL arrived, he favored other women. Without the FL, he'd simply favor different women. She fails to raise the son placed in her care. She has no children of her own and obsessively monitors other consorts' pregnancies. Furthermore, she attempts to poison the emperor and can't maintain composure when confronted. Let's not even talk about her being a poison woman. You can imagine her fate. 😤

[collapse]

Loved the FL and Cheng Ying. It was girl power boss... thank you!!! In the end,

Spoiler

our FL becomes Empress, exactly as she deserves. 👑 The extras reveal she gives birth to dragon and phoenix twins. She already had a son before this.

This is one of the most balanced historical novel I have read in a while. The FL doesn't blindly fall in love with the ML and forget herself and the ML doesn't unconditionally support the ML.. The FL kind of manipulates the ML into falling in love with her but she too ends up being genuinely in love with him. Not everyone in the harem is smart or manipulative, the FL kind of pities the other consorts because they are all stuck there vying for attention. The FL is pretty... more>> lucky, because she managed to turn things every time she was stuck with a problem. The fights and tension between the leads are also mostly logical.. <<less

This was such a good read! I wasnt expecting much when I chose to read this out of boredom-

Spoiler

Cheng Yin and Ning Shuyan’s sisterhood was such a surprise- (they were so close that ML misunderstood them 😂

[collapse]

it was good how it also delved into the Mls thoughts- eventhough he isnt the perfect kind of male lead he faired really well as the story progressed.

Spoiler

He finally came into terms with his feelings and was pretty much honest about it at the later part of the story. He also ended up abolishing the selection of new concubines for our girl- even making her the empress.

[collapse]

The female lead too, although she isnt that overpowered- she wasnt dumb with her decisions. She’s pretty strong willed. Kinda sad they didn’t add more parts of her bonding with her concubine mother.

over all, this was such a good read. UNDERRATED I must say. Although the leads arent perfect and some parts felt rushed at the end- I just love how the story developed. <<less

Another masterpiece! This novel gave me all the feels. Would absolutely recommend!

Ning Shuyan transmigrates to the ancient times and enters the palace because of her concubine mother, determined to hold power and favor so that she can protect herself and, her mother outside the palace. Meticulously step by step, she earns the Emperor's attention and favor facing numerous harem struggles and intrigues ultimately becoming the ultimate victor.

However, this novel is more than that. It showed the different sides to many antagonists and the pitiful reality of many characters stuck in... more>> a horrible imperial system. Even the sad, almost constricting existence of the Emperor is fascinating to read. Xiao Yu, the male lead's progression from a ruthless but law-abiding emperor to a human being constrained by constant proprietary forever stuck between his feelings and responsibilities was definitely the highlight for me. The last twenty chapters made me sob fr. I couldn't stop crying. Definitely worth reading! <<less

Solid harem intrigue novel. It starts right as the FL enters the palace as a lowly ranked cairen and follows her rise through the ranks as she captures the emperor's heart. Most of the story follows the FL as she has to deal with one harem scheme after another, whether she's getting framed for something or is acted against directly, until she reaches the top and is secure in her position.

Overall the novel is nothing groundbreaking but is a great example of a well done harem story.
