Ever long has young nobleman Rolf Buckmann dreamt of knighthood, losing himself in stories of endless errantry and grand gallantry. But that dream seemed ever a dream when his life came crashing down—upon the rite of the Roun of Orisons, Rolf was met with silence from all-goddess Yoná, Most Divine, and thus spurned of Her gift of odyl: the spring of magick strength, to all of whom heretofore were graced.

Branded as an aberration and heretic both, Rolf leaves his scornful family and embarks on a tortured path to knighthood, along with Emilie Mernesse, his beloved and now formerly betrothed. Together, they navigate a society mired in cruelty and contradiction, and find themselves faced with dilemmas that threaten to upturn their lives forevermore.

If I were to make an allegory, MC is an atheist in a super religious society or an "other" in a racist society. So he is treated as a chewtoy. Growing up in that society he internalizes being a chewtoy. Occasionally he shows his grit and smarts in action parts of the story. But nobody gives a sh*t about it afterwards because he is an "other". And he becomes a chewtoy again. If you squint and ignore a lot of things it's somewhat realistic. Sure, no matter what you do... more>> you won't be recognized as a heretic. Now that part may seem cool to you, but hold your horses.

The problem is, Rolf. There is one person who actually, legitimately recognizes his value and decides to recruit him. Instead Rolf decides to stays with his childhood beau, Emilie. Emilie as a reward ignores every single advice of his and publicly berates him on next arc. Everything happens as predicted by Rolf and Rolf saves the day, as expected of an LN. On next chapter we learn that 2 years has passed and Rolf is now beaten by everyone in the unit instead higher ranks. The unit that's been led by Emilie.

The problem is Rolf. He could have solved this years ago. You may think that it's pride but that's not it. He could have swapped units and chase his dreams in a unit that would not have torture him daily. He is not chasing his dream. He is chasing suffering. Rolf is a masochist. This is not a sad story. Rolf is reveling in this suffering. This is his kink. As MungMan mentioned in his WN review of this story, this is misery p*rn. <<less

This is possibly the best translation of a novel I have ever seen period. This novel has been structured entirely in olde english alla lord of the rings and yet it isn't pretentious and is very readable. The problem with this novel is that it is very much not a 'light' novel. I think the other reviewers are very apt in calling this "misery p*rn", this reads like a book that I would read for a college lecture. The story focuses on almost comical levels of the worst parts of... more>> humanity and surely describes the way a non insignificant portion of humanity has lived their miserable lives, trampled by others. That said I think it fails spectacularly as a form of entertainment. As of where I am there is no relief and based on foreshadowing there is no end in sight, the journey that MC has chosen has no good end (much like real discrimination in how impossible it feels to reverse it) except for 2.

Spoiler

He either gains the respect and devotion of someone of great character who has a serious say in the government, or he gains the power that he is lacking to back his beliefs. As it is he has already rejected the help of someone who fits the first category. Based on the founding mythos of this country I expect that rolf will suffer and suffer and suffer some more until he gets power granted to him by a goddess just like the progenitor of the country that he lives in. I believe that the novel is a copy of this founding mythos and based on that I see that the suffering wont end untill the final climax of the story which, based on the business practices of the japanese business companies isn't for another 6 novels

[collapse]

Either way im dropping out here. I deeply respect the vision of the author and the incredible skills and effort from the translator, but I read to have fun and this 'light' novel just isn't fun. <<less

As most have said, the novel is utter garbage following the outcast trope “the goddess has barred me from her blessing, now I walk the lands as an outcast” kind of thing. Problem is the MC is a misery junkie, he doesn’t need to be suffering, but chooses to for some odd reason.

Point is the story is infuriating and predictable, thus loses splendour.

The only interesting thing about this story is the translation. My god the translation here is so magnificent. Reading this doesn’t feel like reading a light novel. No,... more>> it’s like reading a professional fiction book written in the old fashioned style and the poetic flavour of write.

Vagrant’s talents are wasted on this story. <<less

I'm greatly enjoying this story. It's a departure from the usual 'lets watch an over powered character do everything effortlessly'. He experiences real danger, and relies on strategy to overcome the odds.

The main character has a set of values, and sticks to it believing faithfulness in himself will pay off... And it will...

What we get to read is REAL character development, some who questions his beliefs and overtime questions the world he was born into.

The story can get dark.. but so far it hasn't gotten too dark for the sake... more>> of getting dark.

Then the translation.. wonderful. <<less
