So it turns out, in the Song Dynasty, being a concubine wasn’t a lifelong contract. A respectable woman sells herself into concubinage. As her three-year pawn term nears its end, this modern woman-turned-“fake mistress” in ancient times must choose:

Should she reclaim her freedom and search for true love again?

Or submit to fate and remain a servant for the sake of a fleeting royal command?

The early chapters show the FL navigating the harsh realities of Song‑dynasty concubinage with no cheats, no modern knowledge, and no shortcuts. You really see her growth, her work ethic, and the trade arc that shapes her life.

For some toxic reason, I actually wanted her to end up with her first husband again. She never had any physical or romantic connection with the second one, and both he and the main wife were kind to her. She even repaid that kindness when that family fell apart, which was genuinely heartwarming.... more>> But later, it becomes clear why the first husband wasn’t right for her — he’s stubborn, old‑fashioned, and far too ambitious for someone like her.

As for the man she ends up with... I skipped so many chapters that I honestly forgot when he first appeared. But he’s the one who actually understands her and treats her the way she deserves.

If you’re looking for romance, this isn’t that kind of story. It’s a very slow burn with more politics, survival, and daily life than swoony moments. <<less

Took a chance even though there were no reviews and I sort of regret it. I would never recommend it to any of my friends and gave it 3 stars. First 2/3rd is a 5 but last third is a 2 at best.

Summary of novel full of spoilers:

Spoiler

Average modern day lady ends up in Song dynasty as a contract concubine. Gets sold by family #1 after giving birth. Immediately gets sold to family #2. She has less than a year left of her 3 year contract as a concubine and plans on living her best life afterwards but big tragedy. Husband "dies" then main wife dies. She ends up in charge of 3 kids even though she herself is 15/16. She was able to get herself out of contract early and worked multiple jobs to support her little family. ML shows up here and there. The funnest part of the story is when MC risks it all to transport (with a ship) sugar to Korea to become rich. She succeeds and becomes a famous rich lady. Time skip, her old business friend betrays her and author spends so long on this arc with no satisfying conclusion. We conveniently learn that MC's parents aren't her real parents. ML is returning to the capital and may not return. MC learns her baby daddy's backer is going to be making a big move so she goes to the capital, too. There, she is able to find her real mom and is granted a title in exchange for never acknowledging her true family. MC finally marries ML after finding out shes pregnant. There's less than 5 chapters left and MC gets her baby back, a coup is attempted/failed and MC gets her HE.

First half was so good but the ending was so very RUSHED. Author covered what have taken her at least 150 ch in just 20 chapters?!
Spoiler

dealing with birth secret of MC, becoming a noble lady, marriage, getting her baby back, rebellion (all things the author was building up to for the past 150 ch but dealt with in a single chapter for some) and yet spent 30 ch on her business partner's betrayal that was never completely concluded!

[collapse]

The plot itself was so GOOD. It started off as a very realistic and cruel transmigration of a modern person to ancient China.
Spoiler

Those ancients are much smarter than you think and won't fall at your feet just because of hotpot or soap like the typical transmigrations. Also, our MC is a very average modern day person. She does not have any golden fingers. The setting is the same Song dynasty we all know of but that fact does not help her all. Girl doesn't remember any history related information that could better her life. I was waiting for the moment her cheat of being a modern person comes into play but it never truly does!

I love weak to strong stories and although this story is one...
Spoiler

in hindsight, everyone walked all over her and she either too easily forgave them or didn't retaliate. It was just so unsatisfying. Example: Bai destroys friendship because of jealousy but they are back to being best of buddies in less than 30ch. Birth mom abandons her after birth but MC forgives her after mom cries

I'm still very confused about the ML.
Spoiler

I must have zoned out and missed it but I have no idea what the ML's official title or job actually is. Even the MC doesn't know if he has any money when it comes time for them to marry. We never really get much on his background besides his father losing his standing in the capitol when he was younger.

[collapse]

In the end, I don't understand what the point of the story was plus transmigration wasn't necessary for this story and would have been ever better without it.
Spoiler

Author is strangely patriotic at times and on multiple occasions likes to claim other countries' culture as actually Chinese. I'm not a history buff either but MC doesn't know anything that can make her rich or give her an upper hand during Song dynasty but knows that sumo and tea ceremony comes from China? MC had trouble accepting the buying and selling of people but eventually she buys and sells people too. BUT crashes out when her friend sells a maid?! Author, be consistent! Our MC is all over the place after the abrupt time skip. For most of the story, she hates Song dynasty men and tells other women not to rely on a man and never give them your heart. Every man in the story has a major flaw besides ML and maybe that's why she falls for him but it just doesn't fit her character. Without the romance, I believe the story would have been a better fit for the strong modern female character the author was going for by placing her in the Song dynasty as a rental concubine

[collapse]

Tldr; read only if you have run out of other historical Josei novels to real. I did enjoy the story but it left me feeling mostly regret. What a shame. <<less
