Chu Yan’s life went through ups and downs. At the age of fourteen, he stepped into the realm of a fourth level martial arts expert. However, he was framed at the celebratory feast of fifteen and charged with attempting to assassinate the emperor and usurping the throne. In the presence of all the witness and material evidence, he was demoted to a civilian on the spot and sentenced to death. Not only was his martial arts destroyed, the poisoned wine at the banquet was also damaging his body at all times. The Emperor, the Prince, and the Princess colluded just to frame him, the Crown Prince.

To Chu Yan, the turning point in his life was probably the pair of earrings left behind by his mother. This echo loop could open a time and space cage called Return to the Ruins Tower. Inside Return to the Ruins Tower, one day was equivalent to three days in the mortal world. Different levels in the tower had different surprises.

Chu Yan made up his mind, “When I recover my strength, I will take what you guys took from me, and take it back again!”

Ok, so I'm only up to chapter 886 at the moment, but I think I already more or less have an opinion.

(Edit: my opinion is valid until somewhere around ch3000)

It falls somewhere between 3/5 and 4/5.

Gave it 4/5 mostly because it's quite a pleasant read in comparison to all the garbage we are lately flooded with. It's rather shounenish in style (but bad guys aren't massively converted to good guys, they get properly dealt with) but paired with its quality of narration, it's ok.

My assorted thoughts:

    • First few chapters are really bland. To the point where I'd almost stopped reading before I truly started.
    • Cultivation is relatively easy and levels (so far) make sense. Advancements are mostly based on opportunities and plot devices provided to MC. There are some descriptions of cultivation and advancements here and there (nothing overly fancy, but I kinda liked them). Of course, MC can fight beyond his level.
    • A suspicious absence of angry young masters in every town feels weird. A complete lack of "x gasped, y is shocked, z shouts in awe" reaction chapters is really refreshing. I'm not sure if it's due to translation (was reading at arresinc) or if the original is like this, but narration between dialogues conveys some information and is pleasant to read.
    • Opponents have emotions, their sects and relationships, and their reasons to fight. It's nothing overly complex, but it's a nice change to have that not everyone apart from MC's buddies is a full time psycho. So far, just one sect has been relatively bad.
    • Following the previous point, dialogues and inner thoughts sometimes give you this shounenish feeling. Stuff like motherly love and power of friendship pops up here and there in the novel. It's not to the point of being bothersome but it's a bit atypical.
    • Harem is both weak and strong, depending on how you look at it. It is strong because there is a lot of gals. It is weak because they (and their interactions) are quite bland (with an attempt of humour here and there - a sidekick of one girl serves as a full time running gag). On a plus side, kidnapping of spouses doesn't serve as 90% of the plot and gals aren't falling into traps/problems due to their idiocy (let's be honest, it happens a lot in other novels).
    • Friends also have adventures, thoughts, and can bring something meaningful to the story. Of course, MC is the goat but other folks are at least doing something.
    • Resources available to MC don't make much sense. Just adapt to the fact that if it was told that MC prepared for the trip, now he can suddenly make half of the mountain go kaboom with explosives/formations/etc.
    • "Ah, we know what he's going to do now." - Sometimes it feels like there is a plot-related mind connection between MC and his friends. He winks or coughs and 40000 miles away, his friends suddenly understand his secret plan and follow it.
    • Usage of MC's powers (and overpowered opportunities) isn't optimized in any way. But due to the novel not being tr*sh, it doesn't bother me as much as usual.
    • MC is quite often rescued by a variety of plot-related "seniors." It's not truly bad, but still a bit too often for my liking.
  • Edit: after around ch3300 the dao o word count becomes exceedingly strong. It honestly feels almost like a different author. Every single thing has like 4-7 people reacting to it, every single one of them with a paragraph consisting of around 3-5 sentences. Two sidekicks around ch3400 re-appear over and over again and whine for a full length of a chapter about "oh where, oh where is my master?" It's been such a sudden downhill. If I wasn't so close to the "current" chapter, I would probably just drop it around ~ch3500-3600.
