Shavonne is a poor ghostwriter who lives in a run-down apartment in the streets of the slums. He’s lonely, as he has no family and recently broke up with his partner, now he only has a friend, Dr. Fawkes. One day, strange memos began to stick on the door of Shavonne’s house, where he worried everyday about being able to survive. Before he can uncover the mystery behind them, he encounters a beautiful young man that keeps peeling onions on the staircase next to his unit. After having to listen to the man greeting him every day in every possible language, Shavonne gave him candles so that he could hide the smell of onions. The man invited him to dinner, and it was then when Shavonne discovered a body in the man’s bedroom… Are the serial mu*ders that are causing sensation on Ira Street, the mysterious stalker and the young man who peels onions related?

Well, since no one has written a review yet, I'll do it myself.

I loved it, from start till end.

The story is about a ghostwriter (someone who writes books that are published under someone else's name, with the latter getting all the credit) named Shavonne, who lives in not-so-good conditions and has financial problems because he doesn't earn that much money, etc. Etc. More to highlight: he's an orphan, his only friend is Dr. Fawkes (he is an important character to watch out for, even if it doesn't look like it... more>> in the beginning), and his boyfriends don't usually last long.

One day, he discovers that he has a new neighbor named Lewellyn, who is obsessed with onions (and even the word obsessed falls short), and he invites Shavonne to have dinner at his house. While he was there (mini spoiler, but you can read it because it happens at the beginning),

he comes across a dead person in one of the rooms. It turns out that his new neighbor is a mu*derer!

Lewellyn and Shavonne knew each other before! But Shavonne lost all memories, which is why Lewellyn went to find him and reconstruct their old relationship.

So, there's much more to the relationship between MC and ML than what you might think.

Very good development of the story, and also loved how it ended! I highly recommend it. <<less

I will also write a review on this spectacular story!

The story is fairly simple, in terms of summary (I won't dwell on the summary for you can look it up elsewhere). I absolutely adore this story because of its extremely interesting plot. The character development of both Shavonne and Lewellyn is quite interesting to see. I have read this story multiple times, yet I still find myself reading it again.

I will not write (in this review) anything related to the story as it's not what... more>> I intend. However, since you dear reader have decided to read this review, do read this story. Everything about it is marvellous, interesting and shocking. This story is my number 1 favourite Webtoon of all time. It includes: romance, thriller, horror and mystery. It's one of those extravagant reads, where you still find yourself pondering on the thoughts, scenes and quotes of the story.

Do read this dear reader, for you won't ever regret it. <<less

A beautiful story, one which deserves to be enjoyed free from spoilers or expectations. There's a manhwa adaptation that is fantastic and I would highly recommend it, but reading the novel just confirmed to me how incredible this story is.

To put it simply, this is a story about a down-on-his-luck ghostwriter named Shavonne who, while trying to hold his pitiful life together in a crime-ridden slum, meets his new oddball neighbor, Lewellyn. There's quite a lot that happens, but it's best to just let it unfold as you read.

What's probably... more>> the most interesting aspect of this story besides the incredible progression of the leads' relationships and the plot twists, is how scenes we've seen early on get recontextualized and reexamined as flashbacks are revealed to us. Strange quirks that Lewellyn has, like peeling onions on the stairwell or greeting Shavonne every morning with a new language, take on new meaning as we peel back the layers of their relationship. You think you understood how a character felt during one scene, but realize later on that actually, there was far more happening behind the scenes that complicates our initial understanding of a character's actions or words. An enthralling, gut-wrenching read with a lot to chew on and cry about lol. Really, it's been years since I read the manhwa adaptation and it left such a lasting impression on me that I had to read the novel and yes, it was worth it! Give it a try; I'm sure you won't regret it.

The Lute Penitentiary scenes are sooo good, because it's such a violent, terrible place but the two of them created something beautiful and just for themselves. Two lonely, incredibly damaged people found just a single spark of kindness in each other and nurtured that into an enduring love. And even though they suffered horribly with all the odds and powers that be against them, they found each other again and made their own happiness. God, the emotional damage from those scenes is great.

I'm so glad this had a happy ending because there absolutely was every real possibility it would end in tragedy, but NO, they get to be happy and safe together. Such a good palate cleanser for all that TRAUMA and onslaught of HEARTBREAK!

I remember reading this in 2022 and honesty don't remember much about it but this novel was so good I literally cried with the plot twists at the end and was tripping because it was like 2-3 chapters left and they were still in the tension I was lowkey imaginating a bad ending but gladly they ended up well with that one dog they always wanted and the little house.

Honestly I thought this was going to be a red flag killer x victim plot but lewellyn turned out to be... more>> such a golden retriever throughout the entire serie's and was always trying to get to shavonne no matter what. Honestly it was so sad how he got deceived by that one corporal/sargeant or whatever his rank was because he was supposed to leave shavonne alone and literally make him have a good life but instead spied on him with men he'd send to date shavonne.

Maybe while writing this I got some facts wrong or missed some big details but I read this 3 years ago and if I did im so sorry lol pls correct me.

Anyways. Where are all the MLCD fans at????? I've never seen one irl or social media like where y'all at bro I wanna yap with someone about it and like THERES NO MERCH??????? Pls people come out ik y'all exist out there somewhere. Anyways my discord is shavonnee. After binge reading this story in a single night, here is my personal take on this novel, including light criticism and final thoughts!

(MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

In what seems to be an old-fashioned story set in a time before phone technology existed, a man named Shavonne lives alone in an apartment, working as a ghostwriter for multiple people. After a few turns of events, Shavonne is introduced to a man named Lewellyn, who has an odd affection for onions, and for Shavonne himself, it seems. One thing leads... more>> to another, and we are brought into the world of Shavonne and Lewellyn as we learn how they live, connect, and eventually learn what it means to love.

Immediately from the get-go, this story has you on edge with everything occurring in Shavonne's life. When I read it for the first time, I had a feeling that something bad was going to happen sooner or later because of all the suspense and eerie atmosphere being created. This suspense, personally, drew me in and made me want to read more. However, I have to say this suspense is a mini double-edged sword. At times, the story would have lots of build-up only to immediately cut to the chase, making the build-up feel as though it was there for nothing. While this isn't always the case, it can slightly disrupt the pacing for some readers.

What I think is a strong suit of this story is the character writing and the bond that the Shavonne and Lewellyn share together. The pair each have their own specific backstory that plays a big role in how each character acts and how they process their thoughts and decisions, which is something I love to see in novels: when characters feel three-dimensional. I feel that this novel captures character writing perfectly, at least when it comes to these two characters.

Other supporting characters definitely have their own backstories that influence how they act, but the main couple 100% feels more human and emotionally developed than the rest. This may be a drawback for readers who want to branch out and explore side characters more deeply. However, being a light novel, this imbalance makes sense. Either way, the main couple's emotional payoff is just so worth the read.

Another strong suit for this novel would be the way everything clicks into place and begins to make sense. Lewellyn and his onions, certain aspects of his physique, and many other details about him become clearer as the story progresses. Not to mention that Shavonne's side also begins to feel more understandable as his past and emotional state are slowly revealed. I can appreciate an author who knows how to connect everything back together.

All in all, this story is definitely a tear-jerker and worthy of picking up. There is definitely some caution to be taken when it comes to Lewellyn while reading, but his actions carry a sense of virtuous meaning in his own eyes. It's not a story for the lighthearted, but it is very much worth checking out. If you're into yanderes, psychological elements, angst, and reunions, then you'll be as glad as I was to have picked this one up!
