That summer, a boy laid his head on her lap, chewing a fragrant blade of grass and grinning:

“Jiejie, am I good-looking?”

This boy had appeared out of nowhere — spoiled and fearless, relying on her affection to act out, sweet-talking and begging for her attention.

Jiang Xi: “Quit it, or I’ll beat you up.”

The boy: “You wouldn’t dare~!”

But when the secret came to light, the now-grown boy clung to her in panic:

“Jiejie, don’t leave me… please?”

That summer, as the breeze passed through, the boy smiled, showing his little tiger teeth and held out his hand:

“Jiejie, you forgot to take something with you.”

She reached out for him.

He ran toward her, smiling.

Now, as a man, he carefully reaches for Jiang Xi’s hand again:

“Jiejie… I want to go home with you.”

But this time — can she still choose him?

Rumor had it that Lu Nandu was a cold-hearted playboy.

Until one night, a woman walked into the bar.

He saw her, and instinctively hid his cigarette behind his back — flustered.

Jiang Xi never thought she’d see her ex again.

That same Lu Nandu — ruthless in public, but clingy and childishly affectionate in private — the one who once used her softness to get close, only to break her heart.

As she turned to leave, he grabbed her hand and lowered his eyes:

“Jiejie…”

Jiang Xi: “Trying to make me soft again, Lu Nandu?”

She pulled away. “It won’t work this time.”

I really like this novel, its very cute and deals with the topic of mental illness uniquely. The only thing that icks me a bit is how every character can conceal their emotions in a very rapid and unnatural manner, and if the emotions are concealed that quickly and accurately, how is every other character able to guess the other's emotion. All in all, I love the theme, plot, and characters.

4*. My review is purely subjective, btw. My apologies, I am not good with words.

Spoiler

In this novel, the author seemed to be writing for themselves, not for readers. I mean, there were several points in the novel where a normal author could have woven the plot to give either an immense sense of frustration or satisfaction/justice to the reader, but that didn't happen here. For example, when the FL was accused of plagiarism, and then was cleared. A normal celebrity would've posted something poignant for her fans, which would then give a sense of closure and satisfaction for a reader, but yeah, that didn't happen here. Another thing, the person who accused her of plagiarism only apologized in person, but not in public, so for me as a reader, the apology didn't feel complete. So it was like, the FL didn't seem to care for public opinions nor fame that much, she only cared that her name was cleared, and this is where I wasn't sure if that was a conscious decision from the author, or if it wasn't deliberate because the author genuinely felt that way irl.

One more thing, the novel seems to be a quest for "who has a darker experience, the FL or the ML" type of story. I actually don't know if the FL and ML will last long in real life because it's like one broken human being leading another broken human being along, or two broken people trying to heal each other. But, I don't dare speak about the intricacies and complexity of human relationships. I am cheering for these two characters to be happy from here on.

[collapse]

To conclude, it was a good novel, but it wasn't well written enough to warrant 5* for me because I felt like something was missing, like the novel wasn't patterned for other people to read. But hey, what do I know? Maybe it was an artistic decision to write this way? I could be wrong. <<less

3.5 stars. It wasn’t unpleasant, it was pretty easy to get through, but I think this story just isn’t for me. From the summary, I thought this would just be a simple wife chasing crematorium but it wasn’t, there was a lot of depth in the two main characters, and they were each working through a lot of pain in their own lives. I would say the romance aspect felt like more of a subplot, the circumstances of their breakup was kinda swept under the rug when they got back... more>> together, no actual hashing out. You could call it trust, I just call it a plot hole. Overall not a bad read, just not for me <<less
