Mi’s Legacy

The sun has perished, and the apocalypse is upon us.

A little white, blue-eyed cat, infected and mutating, lay on the verge of death.

Rain soaked its fur, making it look like a pitiful, gnawed-on mango pit. To avoid being a burden to its human, the little cat crawled into the ruins alone, leaving behind rows of paw prints on the wall.

“My clumsy human,

When you read this, Mi might no longer be by your side.

Please share my canned food with the other stray cats who need it. My hair ties, my little ball, and my ‘A-Bei-Bei’ are hidden behind the toilet tank. If someone comes along who can protect my clumsy human in my place, I am willing to let them have my favorite A-Bei-Bei.

Human, I was only ever wavering between loving you and mooching for treats.

Human, don’t be sad after I’m gone. Just cry a little, then keep going.

Human, even though the world is cruel now, you must keep trying to live.

Human, you are Mi’s greatest legacy…”

With great effort, the cat left the final, wobbly paw prints. Its dirty little white paw slipped, and its blue eyes closed forever, ending its short life.

But when it opened its eyes again, there was no warm fur, no sharp claws, and even those pink toe beans its human loved so much were gone.

Mi had reincarnated as a human!

Hungry and disheveled, the beautiful, naive boy, Nan Zhi, crouched by the murky waterfall outside the Safe Zone, staring longingly at a mutated red sea bream with 72 teeth.

Fish… it’s like a giant dried fish snack…

If only it had known, it wouldn’t have shared all its canned food with the other cats; it should have hoarded some.

To fill its stomach, the boy stepped into the human city, which was currently in the midst of post-apocalyptic reconstruction. All it had to do was find its former human, and there would be endless freeze-dried treats, cans, cardboard boxes, and little balls to play with. But…

Cats have different visual perceptions a trait the human world calls “face blindness”—everything looks the same.

That’s fine! Mi’s human had silly bangs, wore thick glasses, was hunched and slouching, spoke with a stammer, and was painfully shy and prone to blushing. Those were so many defining features that even with face blindness, Mi could spot them instantly.

Nan Zhi was confident until it saw the Supreme Leader of the Ninth District: tall, imposing, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist, acting as a savior for the last city on earth.

And there, hanging off the waist of the General’s pristine military uniform, was a stray, patched-up, frayed sea bream toy.

It was Mi’s A-Bei-Bei!

Nan Zhi: Wait, you’re saying my clumsy human is the same person as the General??

Now came the real problem: how to make the General believe that his dead cat had reincarnated as a human?

Nan Zhi pounced, nudging him with its nose; Mi decided to bestow upon him the highest honor in the feline world.

The beautiful boy held out a fair, slender hand toward the General: “I’ll allow you to sniff Mi’s paw for three seconds.”

From that day on, Mi lived a life of luxury: eating all the 72-toothed mutated sea bream it wanted, playing with colorful “explosive” little balls (the eyeballs of mutated monsters), and occupying the Supreme Leader’s massive bed in the Ninth District… Wait, hold on.

Nan Zhi solemnly declares: In principle, cats do not sleep on the bed!

It’s all because its clumsy human mutated into someone far too cunning; he covered his pillows and his 115cm-wide chest in catnip, so Mi simply fell onto the bed by accident!

One-Line Summary: Mi has reincarnated as a human!
