Shen Bingsi hailed from a small, remote clan, yet he possessed heavenly talent. He quickly made a name for himself within the Lingjing Sect, the premier cultivation sect of the Central Continent.

In contrast, his close friend Rong Xie possessed only average aptitude. Not long after entering the inner sect alongside Shen Bingsi, he faded into the crowd.

Aware that his path in cultivation was limited, Rong Xie transitioned to a support role behind the scenes. He gathered intelligence for Shen Bingsi and managed the heavenly treasures his friend collected from all corners of the world, gradually becoming Shen Bingsi’s butler.

One night, Rong Xie woke up beside Shen Bingsi drenched in cold sweat. The nightmare he had just experienced felt incredibly real, the details vivid and haunting:

He and Shen Bingsi were merely characters in a popular novel. Unlike the protagonist Shen Bingsi, however, he was just a minor supporting character with scant screen time. He only appeared to provide logistical support when Shen Bingsi needed it, remaining insignificant in Shen Bingsi’s magnificent life.

It wasn’t until the ending—where Shen Bingsi had to sacrifice a ‘true love’ to prove the Ruthless Path and withstand the Heavenly Demons to save the world—that things took a turn. While readers speculated whether the sacrifice would be Harem Member #1 or Harem Member #2, Rong Xie was the one pushed forward.

Reader 1: Well-reasoned and convincing.

Reader 2: ? What the f*** did I just read?

Reader 3: Who is Rong Xie?

Rong Xie looked at the man sleeping on the pillow beside him with a complex expression, tossing and turning all night.

Life by Shen Bingsi’s side was indeed comfortable. His cultivation base was lacking, so Shen Bingsi engaged in dual cultivation to aid him. His disciple quarters were shoddy, so Shen Bingsi spent a fortune purchasing Huanxue Villa. He preferred quiet, and Shen Bingsi was either in seclusion or out alone on missions, never bringing outsiders home.

Should he… leave? Just because of a nightmare?

Rong Xie found the thought amusing himself, until one day, the name of Harem Member #1 fell from Shen Bingsi’s lips:

“Fairy Xingmiao is coming to visit the villa for a tour. Please make preparations.”

Rong Xie pulled out the roster of servant boys pressed at the very bottom of his drawer—the Shen family sent a batch every year, but Shen Bingsi always rejected them.

Now, it seemed, it was time to prepare. With the massive estate of Huanxue Villa, he needed to select a careful and reliable child to take over management so he could run away with peace of mind.

Shen Bingsi: ? Where did my huge, living best friend go?

Pairing: Gentle Beauty Butler Shou (Rong Xie) x Love-Phobic Long Aotian Gong (Shen Bingsi)

Bad, and not even a normal level of bad. If it’s simply not my taste or the writing is poor, I can move on without having to leave a review.

The ML tries to r*pe the MC in the first 18 chapters and the only reason he stops even though MC is crying and begging no is because ... more>>
Spoiler

he’s a quickshot.

[collapse]

Now it’s fine if you have a domineering obsessive type ML who is willing to cross those boundaries, but the way the whole situation is written and handled (“oh MC is half consenting in his mind!” “Just treat it as getting bitten by a dog!”) is absolutely terrible and a huge indicator of both the author’s lack of skill and the directionless farce of the plot. MC and ML are single-dimensional, useless to the extreme. The very first chapter illustrates what a doormat MC is (while understandable given his situation, he doesn’t change even after his prophetic dream, which is the whole point of these kinds of novels.) The ML is even more frustrating — two avoidant idiots, how perfect for each other!

If you like novels where the entire cast of characters and the author together have half a braincell and have to take turns pretending they’re anything close to well-rounded, this is for you. If you have more than half a braincell, move along before you start losing them. <<less

This one is quite good as long as you have some tolerance for the slow burn!

The tone is humorous but with a melancholy to it. I want to give Rong Xie a big hug and a knock on the head to Shen Bingsi. He's soooooo frustrating! Can't hate him though. He's really sweet, just a dummy.

Actual rating would be 4.5 so far. Excellent read so far, though the world outside of the two main characters isn't well described or followed up on.

Very delightful. The Shen Bingsi (ML) reminds me of myself, being aro ace, a lot. Heavily on the aromantic part. I love his inner monologue, and thinking on romantic love. And I'm very excited to see how the author changes his thinking when we get into the real romance later. Very slowburn, but I love that shi, so it's perfect for me.

I actually can't relate to Rong Xie that much (I relate more with Shen Bingsi), he's a bit weak for love in the first few chapters. But he finally... more>> grows a spine, stops giving a damn about love, and lives his life the best he can. Be warned at around ch 17-18, its not explicitly written, but can be challenging for sensitive people. They make up at ch 20-21 very quickly and sets boundaries though.

Spoiler

from the ML pov, he thinks he's forcing his friend, so that he can cultivate quickly and basically not die (even when it meant he would be hated), he's doing it for medical reasons, not due to "lust"

From mc's pov, he's incredibly shy, and does not know anything about physical relationships, and he "half-assed" the dual cultivation

They made up, as ML says he can't stand seeing MC hate him. MC did not realize ML was making up drama plots in his head, and they talked it out

[collapse]

I love reading how different their views are in general, one is a romantic, one is pretty much aro ace, one longs for peace and tranquility, the other is ambitious and fiery. But they complement each other well.

Definitely recommend reading it. <<less
