Lan Wu is a mermaid demon princess who runs away from home to escape an arranged marriage. While fleeing, she is spotted by a cultivator who tries to kill her. In desperation, she swallows a pill that conceals her demonic aura, but as a side effect, it also sealed her demonic powers.

Ji Lingyue, an aspiring cultivator, happens to be passing through the mountains when she finds Lan Wu listlessly resting beneath a tree. After saving her, Lan Wu decides to accompany Ji Lingyue, and the two of them head to Haochen Mountain to become disciples.

This story has been very enjoyable for me. If you really want an obsessive love + devoted love + toxic + powerful couples, this would be it. Others people have pointed that there would be r*pe but there was a reason for it.

The MC (Lan Wu) and the FL (Ji Lingyue) got separated for decades. It was a painful and bloody separation and the FL became obsessive to see MC again. Once they met, FL forced a contract on MC and r*ped her. However it ended as quickly as it started and the MC sexually hurt the FL back immediately. It was an extreme toxic moment between the two of them but the underlying issues were slowly discussed over the later chapters.

The story was well paced and the characters development was well done. As a bonus, this is not a slow burn story. It has smut and the characters aren't afraid to show love to each other. I would recommend this if you want interesting love story with good fight scenes and drama. <<less

What an amazing ride this was. Absolutely worth the read!!

This is such a great story with a very interesting plot. Lots of mysteries and events that are interconnected that gets unraveled as the story progresses. About the s*xual assault chapter:

This situation was not as simple as black and white as some reviews make it sound.

Nobody's going say what Lingyue (FL) did is right. What she did is horrible. But there are reasons that led to her doing what she did.

She binds Lan Wu (MC) with a contract and sexually assaults her, then the MC also assaults FL right after. It really was a very toxic moment between the two.

There is no forgiving what Lingyue did, and she should be criticized for it. However, this illustrates how broken she is as a person; a madwoman driven to do something so depraved to the one she loves because of her fears. I took this part of the novel as a portrayal of her madness, obsession, abandonment issues, and fear of losing another person she loves. All this to say, what she did is absolutely wrong, but it is also understandable as to what drove her to do it.

I'm simply going to say that you have to step out of your comfort zone here to analyze and understand what lead to this and why it happened. This sets their dynamic for the rest of the story as they slowly learn and addresses their issues.

Also, don't worry about FL not facing consequences, she suffers plenty enough. She suffers, she regrets, she grows as a person, and she wants to make sure she she never hurts her love again. But whether her character was redeemed by the end is something for the reader to decide.

I would suggest to keep reading because it's worth it when you reach the ending, especially with the extra chapters.

All the underlying issues of that moment were acknowledged, slowly discussed and dealth with as the story progressed. The story needed that character growth part for this, which happens throughout the 150 or so following chapters. It wouldn't have made any sense to address it right after it happened without the characters changing themselves. And we do get a very satisfying character growth for both leads.

This is a wonderful story that takes you into a whole new world full of magic and action. The side characters are all amazing and fun. I miss them already. And the extra chapters were the cherry on top.

Another review said you'll be a freak to read this and like it. Don't let comments like that guilt trip you into skipping a good novel. You can very well hate/disagree with what the FL did and enjoy the rest of the novel for everything else it offers. You can also skip those chapters (Chap.44-46) and enjoy the story.

It is well written and fits with the flow of the story. But it can also be skipped and you won't miss anything out of the story aside some bonding time between the FLs.

I'm glad I trusted DragonTL's judgment in picking this novel. It is definitely another gem. I highly recommend this novel, especially if you enjoy xianxia. Read past those few chapters, you will absolutely feel rewarded at the end.

Ji Lingyue's character starts out undeniably dangerous I mean I expected it, but I appreciated the complexity and progress the author wrote into her arc. While her initial actions were unsettling but it was on later chapters, this is fiction, and her growth and the story’s compelling trajectory quickly outweighed my discomfort. The character development and eventual ending are quite good, so push through to the end.

The side characters alone make this novel worth reading they are remarkably well realized and felt genuinely real, a significant feat I rarely encounter... more>> in baihe.

Speaking of quality, I have to call out the reviewer who claimed the smut was poor that's hilarious! The intimate scenes are fantastic because the author uses a sophisticated "tell, don't show" technique, not like your typical generic smut descriptions that are just like 'thrust! Thrust! I'm thrusting my fingers!' or 'suck her b**bs, whatever.' The original text’s smut is genuinely well written, and the English translation holds up.

A great read overall, and certainly time well spent. <<less

It's true Ji Lingyue was dangerous. She should've never been forgiven for what she'd done. Did that make me uncomfortable? Very much so. Would I, a real person, forgive her if she'd done that in real life? Absolutely not. I'd burn her at the stake. Is she a fictional person from a fictional story? Yes. Did I keep reading? Yes. Does it get better? Yes.

Do you have the ability to think for yourself and decide which is reasonable from not, which is right from wrong? If yes, I'd urge you... more>> to keep reading--both this and the novel.

I went to the green site to read everything when I caught up to the human translations. It's a pretty good ending. Unfortunate as Ji Lingyue's choice of reunion activity was, the story's trajectory at the time and my eagerness to see what would become of their relationship weighed heavier than my discomfort. I shouldn't forget to mention the very delightful handling of the side characters. They were interesting, they felt real. I liked reading about them and was reluctant to see them go when the story ended. This was something that I couldn't see much in other baihe novels, and dude, I've read A LOT.

While it's not the best I've read, I can comfortably say that I had not wasted my time. <<less

I'm officially dropping this novel and here's why:

Story started out really interesting and great. There were issues between the two main leads, however in hindsight, it is something that could be patched over eventually. Going through the story, what would take place is forgivable and reasonable among the characters.

I understand why Ji Lingyue is extremely hurt, though at the same time, Lan Wu had little choice in the matter. She was a demon and had to return to her homeland due to her father's death and the general turmoil that's now present in the merfolk territory. In a way, you can say how all of this came to be due to Lan Wu's departure, but since we're not there yet, we know little of her fault in this matter since we don't exactly know how the prophecy works. If it's fate, then there's really nothing much Lan Wu could do. At the same time, she did lie a lot, and hid a major part of herself from Ji Lingyue and her friend, which leads to their hurt feelings.

Understandable, but what happens later on is just not something I can sit comfortably with. For the gist, I'll be straightforward: the story took an unexpected though predictable turn of Ji Lingyue's deteriorating mental state, and therefore she had a desire to completely bound and trap Lan Wu with her. And she succeeds. My real issue is how this was portrayed in the story, and how it's so glossed over within it as if a mere single heart-to-heart "let's be honest with each other<3" talk will bury the very present issue. I also dislike how this completely unbalanced relationship (in terms of control and autonomy) got compared to dao companions as though Lan Wu (who is basically the s*ave in this contract) is doing all the things she described herself would do- (spoiler for detailed stuff)

Because Ah Li, this sweet summer child, doesn't understand exactly how beast contracts works. Lan Wu, by this point, is already bound by Ji Lingyue with a beast contract. She herself knows it's an issue and not something Ah Li should probably know her master just got subjected to. But she did describe the things she would do as "stay by her side, protect her, " and something more romantically deceiving things that led to Ah Li assuming they became dao companions. That too, however, is an issue.

-willingly. In which she was not. Everything had been forced upon her, and there's not nearly enough instances to clearly point out how big of an issue this is that comes off infuriating. Especially considering that she gets r*ped just after the contract was forced upon her. And yes, I'm not kidding. This happened. It's within the story.

For further detail, Ji Lingyue basically treated her as a s*x s*ave, using Lan Wu to pleasure herself while Lan Wu pleaded for her to stop.

And Ji Lingyue holds little to no regret over her actions, not the forceful binding, not the assault, she only feels bad for herself when Lan Wu, very rightfully, got mad at her for forcing her like this. And even then, the way the story tried handling this is nearly not enough for me to see Ji Lingyue in a good light, or even forgive her. Lan Wu may forgive her, but I, as a reader, absolutely cannot. I'm appalled, disgusted, and utterly dismayed by this direction, to the point that I'm hoping after I forget this novel, that the couple never gets a happy ending, and Lan Wu can instead achieve her own happy ending, free, and with a partner that would respect her, her circumstances, and especially her body and autonomy.

A xuanhuan novel that does a good job capturing the hard-to-define xuanhuan world atmosphere. The first few chapters being a cold opening does a great job at hooking the reader. During the early plot, the author plays a little loose with timeskips. This is mostly fine, but there's definitely a few plot threads where it feels like you have to jarringly update your knowledge of the plot afterwards. Past the 'first arc' though, timeskips get less frequent and more pivotal, so this issue doesn't last too long.

The... more>> plot itself has strong emotional and thematic throughlines, and both the relationship between the FLs and the rest of the plot are gripping. This is helped by having strong side characters, with many being given their own mini-arcs and/or pasts that help elevate them as characters. The book is also quite good at thematic writing, with many plot beats showing echos of earlier ones that help further explore the themes or help the new beats land better. Finally, the book is quite good at wrapping up storylines and making the ultimate conclusions feel satisfying. <<less

This novel was incredibly entertaining. Kept me hooked from the start to end. I know a lot of people have issues with the toxic and non-consensual elements of the story (rightfully so), but I personally have a penchant for toxic relationships as long as they are written well. And this is a perfect example of obsessive/toxic love done right. Both main characters are flawed, reckless, and absolute red flags, which feels realistic and makes them more humane, imo. They love, they break, and they hurt each other in their own... more>> ways, and their relationship never feels stagnant or boring. The action scenes are good and side characters are developed well. The intimate scenes are great, don't listen to those saying it's bad, that's an utter lie.

I would definitely recommend this novel, if you are worried about the problematic aspects in the middle trust me, it gets better, and you won't regret reading this. <<less

This story has had me on edge for so long... the story was alright in start even though they added the glimpse into the future for the first chapter which kind of put me on edge until they made it back to that point in the story. But as soon as I thought it was going to get better... it turned into straight victim blaming and r*pe.... honestly I felt like sh*t after reading that.

the MC and FL had a really nice relationship for the first half of the story, with a little problem of the FLs hate for demons (which MC is) but other than that it was fine. However, one day the MCs sister and friend came to take her back because her father died and her identity was revealed as a demon so she had no choice but to leave the FL and sect. But you know what, the FL is now fully blaming MC so when they met again the FL attacked and then ENs*aveD MC, which btw was probably my breaking point but I was near the end of the available chapters so I decided to carry on reading but guess what... it gets worse, the FL lead after capturing MC then r*pes her and turns her into a cultivation furnace... crazy. AND even after finding out the reason why MC had to leave she STILL forced MC to continue being a s*ave for another 3 YEARS.

Honestly, I am extremely disappointed with this story. It had a lot of potential and a nice description which made me think it was going to be a well thought out story but no.

I recommend that you guys don't waste your time on this story unless you are a freak who loves the MC being forced to do things she doesn't want🤮

This is honestly really good so far. The fighting scenes are well written, the plot flows smoothly, and the cast of characters are relatively interesting. Pretty addicting read. The relationship between the two leads is sweet and quick. The plot is super interesting as of now and I'm just waiting for crap to hit the fan once everyone finds out Lan Wu's identity. The FL (Ji Lingyue) doesn't hide her hate for demons WHATSOEVER, mermaids not being an exception so... more>> I'm predicting the fall out won't be pleasant.

Since there's only a few chapters out rn, the story has been pretty fluffy despite a few setbacks with monsters. I don't really like cultivation novels all that much, but the cultivation aspect is easy to understand and entertaining. Lingyue will definitely be possessive and extremely obsessive over Lan Wu in future chapters (already calling it lol) as of now, she's just protective and a genuinely good friend who's in love.

It's also smut, which is definitely a factor. Smut is good but it's personally not a reason I would choose to read this story as the plot carries. But it's definitely a plus. Translation is peak as always, thanks translator (s).

Edit: Oh nahhh, I let the book simmer for a bit and when I started reading again, the MC got... assaulted and ens*aved. However, I will say that they both hurt each other in many ways. Also, the assault gets overlooked and not addressed... at all. Pretty much, stuff happens, Ji Lingyue fell asleep, and Lan Wu started going on her with her shit, taking Yue with her. They have a heart to heart discussion and somewhat reconcile I guess but not really and Lan Wu is still ens*aved. Would I still recommend? I'm gonna let is simmer for a bit and check back after it hits 70-100 to see if anything changes with their relationship/their issues get addressed. The plot was interesting and had me hooked and with such a high quality translation, I'm hesitate to let it go. Btw, assault chapters is 44-46 (the translator put a r*pe tag so readers can avoid it) <<less

The FL's r*pe and treatment of the MC is inexcusable. I only stuck around to see if the MC would hold a grudge, but the novel soon took a light hearted tone, which I can't reconcile with. The MC also started indulging the FL again.

The smut feels incomplete to me. The MC is the top and the FL is the pillow princess who does not in return. There were numerous smut scenes so far and the FL has also become "experienced", so it's about time she did something back. I... more>> am quite new to yuri smut, but I am sure coitus is a mutual act and you can't find it here. The MC is always the giver and the FL is always the taker. The scene always ends after the FL finishes.

Wow, this DragonTL people really can find both, absolute gems and worst tr*sh. This one is later, of course... this novel is exactly what you will imagine when think about bad writing tr*sh smut novel. Not only thats bad novel, but bad smut as well. I mean, imagine smut but with chinese censorship with all this buds, folds, nut etc s*upid words.
