For a decade, Qi Zhaoxi had lived as an elusive swordsperson of the Jianghu, and a likewise elusive member in a sect of demonic renown.

He would be capable of thriving in either role—if only he were less weathered by the lifestyle. Having never wanted to serve his current master, he wished for nothing than to retire into mountain seclusion, even before thirty years of age.

This, though, changed the very day he met Jiang Li in a chance encounter, one that involves Jiang Li saving his life, and him saving his.

“The Jianghu is a place where battles ensue between sects, and where blades of good and evil collide.

Not a place exists for humans to drink in peace, while spaces abound for corpse and bone to rest in peace.

Worldly renown is born from nothing more than aggression and ambition; grievance and gratitude, borne from but unending streams of selfishness.

I’ve seen enough of the world’s sceneries, that the mountains and rivers have begun to look no different. I’d even thought to toss aside this mortal realm, and to put an end to it all.

But that was before I met you.”

Before embracing a blade, brace yourself for injury.

Hello! I'm the translator of this novel. I've previously made this review in response to an earlier review, but as that review has long since been removed, I'll edit this review a little, and contrary to my previous review, I'll try using this space as a little warning.

If you are familiar with the author's other works, this one might well be different, and unrecognizably so. This novel is not for those seeking instant gratification, or romance. It is plot-centric rather than relationship-centric, and the plot does takes some time to... more>> take shape. In comparison to her other historical work, there is perhaps less focus on the characters' feelings and the romance, resulting in relatively less poetry, imagery, and riveting quotes (there are quotes of importance, but I would say they have a more quotidian vibe; much of the words are expended on unveiling the plot, and not the romance). There are also very many side characters, and this may potentially cause considerable frustration for those eager to watch the romance unfold. All in all, it is indeed a bit of a slow burn. And even at the end of the day, the romance really does not burn as impassionedly as a lot of danmei out there, in many senses of the word (i.e., for those looking for sm_t scenes, I will inform you straightaway: there is essentially none haha. In terms of descriptive scenes, absolutely zero, at least not in the JJWXC version). It is also mostly pain (although there is a small amount of humour).

There are reasons why I love this novel so dearly. This is a true 5-star review, but I will openly admit to being swayed heavily by how much the main characters resonate with me. There is a fairly large amount of drama inflicted by side characters, and the effects of main characters' familial histories. It is also for people who might like a cute and sweet but not exactly super exciting main CP. The main CP comprises of two calm characters who are willing to fight for what and who they love. Their dynamic is peaceful and sweet; in some ways, they're like a model couple because there's just so little toxicity in the way they interact, and the way they self-regulate. The side CP is more interesting in comparison -- I'd describe it as lovesick and very good-natured gong x cold but thoughtful and very unlucky shou. Despite liking the main CP a lot, I would say that the side CP is more eyecatching and intense in terms of romance + plot. However, be warned (please do not open the spoiler unless you want a humongous spoiler) :

Spoiler

the side CP is BE.

[collapse]

Some are also drawn to the age gap between the characters, or the master-disciple relationship. So here's another warning (clicking this spoiler isn't as bad as clicking the above, but still be warned) :

Spoiler

Their age gap is smaller than meets the eye. Their master-disciple relationship is established early on to be an artifice they had both agreed on constructing, as a means for each of them to achieve their own separate ends.

Overall, this novel is for the meticulously minded who do not mind delayed gratification; for those who like watching plot points slowly unravel, and to reflect on which previous parts were foreshadowing. And it is probably for those who are willing to subsist on things that are a little cute and a little sweet, and not so much spicy (except the side CP, which is 30% spicy and 100% bitter/salty).

I'll summarise this ramble: This story does not seem to have been written to be widely likeable. Not everyone will like the story. However, those who do might love it. <<less
