Xue Cuo, rebellious senior brother of Tianyi Sect, only wanted to cultivate quietly but his road is filled with obstacles and foes, with each discovery in his journey leaving him questioning everything he ever knew.

In a world of scheming cultivators and chaotic power plays, Xue Cuo’s accidental fame earns him a flock of junior disciples and the obsessive attention of Yin Feixue, a rival who’d rather kill him than lose to him.

Centuries later, Xue Cuo returns from the dead to find his grave lovingly maintained by none other than his so-called mortal enemy.

A witty, slow-burn xianxia romance between a sharp-tongued cultivator and the demon king who never stopped waiting.

A masterpiece truly.

Don't be fooled by the seemingly light-hearted summary, this novel's tone is generally actually sombre.

Beginning with MC's childhood, rife with crushing parental expectations and neglect, worsened by factional struggles and then utterly destroyed by the terrible truth behind his sect, MC's childhood is filled with heartache but barely salvaged by his junior disciples who cared for him and fought by his side.

His adulthood is filled with conflicts left and right destroying this and that corrupt so-called deities but completely without regrets as he was able to pursue what... more>> he wanted and protect what he wanted to protect.

It was both a beautiful and heart-rending journey as MC was forced to confront the worst of the corruption and cruelty in the world throughout his journey but his conviction and strength of will really moved me. I usually don't like MCs with saint-like personality but the way the author portrayed him made him human with his cheekiness and mischief despite his saving-people impulse and martyrdom so no white lotus here people. Anyhow, I actually came to adore Xue Cuo very much, the cute menaceXD

Anyhow, if you came for the romance, well, you're gonna have to wait a while coz that only appear in the last 1/3 of the story while the first 2/3 was used to build up the setting of the world and establish MC's character growth as he grew up from a healing little dumpling menace to a towering tree, providing shade for others.

However, despite only covering barely 1/3 of the story, the romance was still beautiful and heartbreaking though the HE helped, still, I cried so much when the author described Yin Feixue's painful wait for Xue Cuo🤧

Though the story is not without it's loopholes, like, the extras didn't get enough screen time to fill in the time skip and some didn't get any screen time at all until they appeared near the end. But the biggest loophole is
Spoiler

the MC's existence actually. Exactly what or who he is to make his fate so significant was never really expanded and neither did his past life.

But I guess the author wanted to leave that to our imagination?

Ain't gonna lie though, the plot twist about MC's father at the end was shocking. I mean, I knew he wasn't a decent person to begin with but what he did to Xue Cuo and Gu Ruhui is plain unacceptable... <<less

I enjoyed this for the interesting xianxia storyline but do not read this thinking you are going in looking for a romance. In fact, the romance is the last 5% of the plot.

The first half of the plot revolved around MC's childhood (he's 6yo), and it was in fact, very adorable. There were definitely hard times like his parents' attitude towards him but MC is a very likeable character. He was both mature yet very childlike in his outlook that made his perspective very refreshing in this xianxia plot.... more>> Also, it definitely took a very dark perspective on the genre. Don't get too attached to side characters.
Spoiler

There's a very harsh reality and line drawn between the cultivators, immortals and mortals. It is graphic and life can be seen as fleeting.

Just one question:
Spoiler

was it just be or did sword uncle just get forgotten in the second half of the novel?

There's a super big climax in the middle of the book before moving on to the next arc and only then does ML enter.
Spoiler

In fact, I kind of wondered why none of the more important side characters from the first arc were ML. By the end of the novel I did come to like MC and ML's relationship but that was a thought that nagged me when we were almost 60% into the novel and not much ongoing in the romance department.

[collapse]

I think because of the big shift between arc 1 and 2, I wasn't heavily invested in the plot when arc 2 started and was losing interest. It took a while to build back the momentum, mainly because I wanted to see how the story wrapped up

and like where the summary came from?

[collapse]

The main side characters were great, but MC was definitely the pillar of the story because of his witty dialogue, good heart and the way he could form connections with other people. It was heartbreaking to see him go through the events that happened. Biggest spoiler:

the summary happens across the ending AND the extras. It's eventually a HEA in the extras but for a single moment I was so worried. Also, the ultimate bad guy in the end was his father?! I was actually quite taken aback but also not entirely surprised.

[collapse]

This is definitely a story where the romance is just the subplot but it was pretty cute at the very end. I was pulled in by the seme protag tag but I don't think it was explicit in the end (also did not get that vibe).

Overall this was a refreshing take on the xianxia genre that had a heavy focus on MC as a child for half the novel with only a small dash of romance at the end and more angst thrown in than you might expect. <<less
