TL;DR: A unique and intriguing concept that, in execution, leaves some to be desired.

This review will begin with the positives and end with the critiques.

First of all, the actual plot and setting are very interesting. To explain it simply, the main character is a young dragon in a fantasy world who has been endowed with his previous life's memories, where he had a Ph.D. In biology. He utilizes this knowledge to improve himself on a path yet untrodden by other dragons. This includes biological experiments, quantifying and exploring the origin... more>> of magic, and other fantastical studies.

I am massively biased towards this plot of accumulating knowledge through research. I love the author's explanations for how magic works in this world, and seeing the main character intelligently implement his discoveries is wonderful.

Second of all, the way that the transmigration was handled. In practice, this is actually not a transmigration at all. The main character truly is a dragon, he just has some memories from a human. The author shows this perfectly, keeping the MC's ruthlessness and adding intelligence. The best of both worlds for a non-human main character.

He also does not make massive modifications to the world around him based on his past life's knowledge. Instead of inventing cars or whatever, he just single-mindedly focuses on his own research. While this may be considered a flaw to some, I am really glad that this novel isn't focused on kingdom-building.

Third of all, the power system. Though this novel is just beginning and we do not have an in-depth understanding of it yet, we at least know that it is more of a Western fantasy than an Eastern fantasy. This alone already makes the novel feel like a breath of fresh air compared to generic cultivation novels, but there is more to it.

The main character, as I said before, is studying the origin of magic organically. The author is giving genuine depth to the power system, making it both unique and realistic in the setting. Also, though this is partially bias, I feel as though the Western magic system gives the author more leeway in how he wants to develop strength in this world.

Now, onto the negatives.

Firstly, and mainly, is that I don't feel particularly attached to any character. Now, this is not to say that the author is failing to make characters unique. That is actually something he excels at, with character progression already occurring just 38 chapters into the novel.

Instead, I simply do not care about the characters besides the main character. I feel no emotional connection to them despite recognizing their uniqueness. It makes the novel as a whole feel somewhat stale, or even boring at times. When the author focuses on the developments and aspirations of the side characters, I feel apathetic.

This may be in part to characters not having desirable traits or funny interactions. It feels like every conversation has a purpose and every character is unruffled. The novel feels less lively without these aspects.

I don't even think I have any other critiques, that is the only thing that made me feel slightly bored while reading this.

Overall, this novel is alright. There are no glaring flaws, and I would recommend it despite my sole complaint. <<less
