In an era when Guide kidnapping is rampant and even considered normal due to the shortage of Guides.

Chae Do-min, an exceptionally talented S-class Guide, is suffering from overwork,

and was waiting for a cute Esper to kidnap him.

Suddenly, a strange sense of déjà vu.

Finally, Do-min’s intuition, honed from being kidnapped at least five times, was telling him:

This is surely the appearance of an Esper who will save me from Guiding hell.

…But the Esper who has confined me is strange.

The more submissive I act, the happier they become, rather than getting bored.

Is this… right? Is it?

This was a cute read. I enjoyed when the MC was confined with the ML and the different outfits the ML was trying to get the MC to wear.
Spoiler

After the confinement ended I didn’t enjoy it as much but it was a cozy read.

I sorta wished we got more of the side characters. The plottwist towards the end also fell a little flat for me as I didn't feel like there was much foreshadowing for it.

3 stars.

I tried really hard to continue this but I don't think I'm in the right mindset to read it. If you're into Stockholm syndrome stories, this is it for you.

One of the biggest reasons I can't really finished this story is the pacing of it. It's honestly a chore to read if you're not in the right mindset. For example, I was expecting more action since this is a guide/esper-verse story but got a weird slice-of-life story instead. The author also does these jump cuts on what's happening outside... more>> of the cozy, kidnapped life to the outside world where things are building up but since the MC nor the ML are actively interacting with those scenes, you are extremely tempted to skip those scenes as it doesn't feel like there's a point in reading them.

MC is that self-indulgent character you wish you were if you romanticize a Stockholm syndrome. He is very aware of his situation but slowly starts caring for ML who kidnapped him. He initially wanted to be kidnapped as the summary states only for the reality to set in. This is where thr main plot lies.

ML on the other hand is disturbed. He has something going on and comes off as a creepy puppy. You find him cute but something about him is just off. Despite being different from your typical MLs you find in other stories, he does come off as 2 dimensional. The way the story builds him up, it looks like there is a lot of depth but I'm not going to find out.

Again, you have to be in the right headspace and will to push through a lot of scenes. It's interesting, don't get me wrong, but not for me as of right not. <<less

I was expecting some psychologically heavy and angsty novel but really it was just a slice-of-life. All the MC does is just take an involuntary leave from work and laze around, while the ML is a glorified butler. You can read this with your feet kicked up.

I can't even call this a kidnapping story. What kind of kidnapping is done willingly??

For a large portion of the novel (about the first half/one-third?), the MC is basically in a 5-star hotel. He doesn't really stop the MC from doing anything apart from... more>> leaving and doing chores. If the MC tried to help out, the ML literally throws a fit haha. What's weird is that the ML is somehow a green flag (yellowish-green? lime?) ? He doesn't force the MC to do anything (?), doesn't stop the MC from doing what he wants (?), and mostly just acts like a jealous lover.

Spoiler

More specifically, he doesn't force his desires on the MC. At most, he guilt-trips the MC into holding his hand and hugging him, but even then, his guilt-tripping is just him whining and crying a bit, which the MC finds cute lol. Even during the smut scene, the MC got uncomfortable and the ML literally stopped and put the clothes back on the MC. He doesn't actively try to stop the MC from escaping either (kind of? or more like just got tricked by the MC). The MC did run away, but then the ML found him really quickly. You'd think this is where the creepy angst stuff starts but it ends up being more like a breakup scene lol? The ML just starts crying and hugging his leg in public LMAO. There are times where the MC talks to others and the ML gets unreasonably jealous but all he really does is sulk... There is a chain? But you forget that it's even there, and it's gone in like 20 chapters. He's also really straightforward; he doesn't lie and says things as he understands it. What looks like coercion is really just him having a loose screw.

[collapse]

There's no ab*se of any kind whatsoever. And the MC just spends most of his time eating and watching TV, but it can get boring but most of it is just them ever so slowly becoming closer. The author drops some bits of information about what's happening outside which is interesting and easy to piece together. The MC is very aware of his situation and is very unbothered. The ML is just straight up weird. He does some weird mental gymnastics and the MC acknowledges that he has an absurd logic but just accepts it lol. But the ML can be a bit unrealistic and his character feels a bit under-explored.

Spoiler

ML doesn't have a tragic backstory? At most, he's just an esper that suffered a lot because he can't be guided by anyone other than the MC but otherwise grew up in an environment that makes him weirdly naive. Like he gets tricked by the MC easily and gets shy over innocent things like his name being called or kissing on the forehead. I keep thinking he's going to reveal that he's actually not all that innocent but nope. He really is like that.

[collapse]

There is some esper action in the later half, which was enjoyable, but the final twist (action scene) was a bit of a letdown to me? But that's just my opinion lol. I think it's a fun read, just don't expect something heavy or twisted or some exciting worldbuilding plot line. It's really more like a regular romance novel with some absurd sort of meet-cute. Oh, and they have a cat as their kid.

Whilst the translation is great, the story is utterly bland- like you feel caught in a time loop because essentially the *exact* same situation happens over and over again.

As someone else has pointed out, this is very much a slow slice of life story. But it's just... Lacking anything really interesting.

I skipped 20 chapters, same thing was happening. Still no escape, MLs actions are still incomprehensible. Read a couple more, finally, the MC escapes!

... more>> But *immediately* returns bcs the ML cries a little.

I'm not joking the inorganic affection from the MC to the ML is actually quite jarring; even with the foreshadowing of a previous meeting of the two (which the MC clearly states he doesn't remember). The ML never elaborates- what the author was going for here I'll never know...

Long story short, the author doesn't seem to know how to write anything of substance when it comes to emotion or tension. <<less

It is a good read only if you are in a mood for a lighthearted comedic slice of life confinement novel.

As for my take on the novel, the one think I didn't like was that the kidnappings were just too common for the MC (and all the guides) and it doesn't even feel like one. Moreover the MC actually wishes to get kidnapped, thus because of the lack of reaction on getting kidnapped the story lacks pace, as plot remains steady throughout without much conflict.

Personally I expected a normal... more>> transition of being shocked on getting kidnapped to eventually finding the confinement life enjoyable so I was a bit disappointed. <<less

I wanted to like this more than I did.

There's a lot of disjointed world-building, and the way society is presented does not make sense.

There is a shortage of guides, so they get kidnapped. The officials laugh it off as a courting ritual unique to Espers, and then just work the remaining Guides to death without putting any effort into locating the kidnapped guides. Apparently, the guides are never actually hurt (except, yes, we find out later there are several Espers out there raping, torturing, and mu*dering them, meaning actually there... more>> are serious consequences when some guides are kidnapped).

Sorry, this dynamic just doesn't work. Either the guides are important, or they aren't. Either they are getting hurt, or they aren't. Did the author forget what they initially wrote? Or did they try to backtrack? Would the government response really look like this if their assets were stolen? It's all just confusing nonsense. Especially because you find out later the official saying all this and acting unconcerned about the MC has known him since he was a child and is someone he calls Uncle. Why wouldn't this person be freaking out???

The MC is an S-rank guide that has the privilage of guiding without physical contact, so he is presented as someone better than the other less fortunate guides. The MC is just coasting above this pile of filth without a care in the world. All he thinks about is food, sleep, and his cat. Nothing else really goes on in his head. There is no sense of real crisis or danger. He still smiles kindly at rapist Espers and has acted as a mediator between an Esper and his victim before, only to sigh and think, "Gosh, now I have to work more, " after the victim was seriously harmed and ran off to another country to hide from his ab*ser. What!? And this guy still doesn't get worried when other Espers are clearly perving on him, despite admitting that he is basically a civilian compared to the monstrously powerful Espers. What!? No, it's just weird. Nothing about those interactions and reactions make any sense!

When we get the ML's perspective, he's eventually like, "Oh, I shouldn't have kidnapped him, it's bad, " but literally nobody seems to actually care, so why would he have these thoughts? And his circumstances don't make sense. I don't understand why someone in his position would ever have to resort to kidnapping in the first place. Is the author ever going to reveal the ML's complete backstory and motivation? Does the author even have any idea what his true backstory and motivation are? It feels like they are just making up stuff as they go along. Everything is just vague for no reason. Characters lie and keep secrets for no reason.

I know this review is kind of jumbled, but that's what this story does to you. <<less
