– University campus 1v1 sweet story

– “Straight” homophobic top × oblivious-flirt reborn bottom

After a seven-year-long relationship, just as Shen Yu and Cheng Mofei were about to get married, Shen Yu was diagnosed with late-stage cancer.

In the final moments, lying on the hospital bed, his once-proud and strong lover held his hand tightly, crying uncontrollably.

When Shen Yu opened his eyes again, he traveled back twelve years to the year he turned eighteen, just after finishing the college entrance exams.

Given a second chance at life, Shen Yu decided on two goals:

1. Take care of his health.

2. Live a good life with Cheng Mofei.

Shen Yu resolutely filled out his college application to Cheng Mofei’s former university, packed his belongings, and headed alone to the northern city where they had spent seven years together.

The first time they met was at the freshman reception. Cheng Mofei was being confessed to by a junior, but his face showed clear disdain as he said, “I’m straight, I’m not interested in men.”

Shen Yu: “?”

He distinctly remembered it was Cheng Mofei who had made the first move on him.

The second time they met was in their dorm room. Shen Yu had used a few connections to become Cheng Mofei’s roommate.

Cheng Mofei threw an arm around his shoulders in a familiar way, leaned into his neck to sniff for a long moment, and asked, “Brother, what did you put on? It smells good.”

Shen Yu replied with the name of a body wash brand.

It was Cheng Mofei’s favorite body wash—the same one that bore witness to countless passionate moments they shared in the bathroom.

The next day, an identical bottle of body wash appeared in their dorm bathroom.

The third time they met was in the campus clinic. An athletic student had been harassing the pretty freshman, Shen Yu.

Cheng Mofei strode up, shielding Shen Yu behind him, his gaze icy as he said, “My xiongdi is a straight man. Take your filthy thoughts elsewhere.”

Shen Yu: “…” Actually, he wasn’t.

While Shen Yu was torn over how to bend the still-closeted Cheng Mofei, Cheng Mofei seemed to be unknowingly courting him every day.

“Shen Yu and I hit it right away. We’ll definitely be good brothers for life.”

“What’s wrong with good brothers sharing a bed?”

“Good brothers should shower together.”

“We straight guys don’t care about stuff like that, do we?”

Shen Yu: “…”

Later, Cheng Mofei began to notice a few peculiarities about his “good brother.”

He realized Shen Yu seemed to have someone special in his heart. His phone password was a date—one that turned out to be their future anniversary.

He even muttered someone’s nickname in his sleep. And all this time, the body wash he had been using was the exact scent loved by that mysterious someone.

And… that “someone” seemed to be a man!

Cheng Mofei was completely floored.

On the anniversary from his previous life, Shen Yu had dressed up carefully and bought Cheng Mofei’s favorite small cake, hoping to celebrate this special day with him in this lifetime.

But as soon as he opened the dorm door, he was pinned against the wall.

The familiar fragrance lingered at the tip of his nose as Cheng Mofei, gritting his teeth, said: “You’re not allowed to be with some wild man.”

Shen Yu: “?”

Reading Notes

1. “Straight” × closeted × mutual attraction (both sides fall).

2. Sweet campus story. Shen Yu didn’t choose the university just for Cheng Mofei—it was already his best option.

3. Only Shen Yu is reborn; Cheng Mofei is not. The story revolves around the tension caused by Cheng Mofei initially being homophobic and “straight.”

4. Extras include: Cheng Mofei after Shen Yu’s death in the previous life + memory recovery in this life.

5. Characters are not perfect—please be understanding.

6. All place names are fictional—don’t map them onto real locations.

I loved this story so much, the fluffiness made my heart literally melt I can't- The extras are so cute too! And guess what? What happens in the summary actually happens in the story quite accurately and I was like I RECOGNISE THIS!!! When I get up to those parts. It's a very light-hearted and lovely story I totally recommend if you need a nice pick me up to read.

ML is adorable a total golden retriever boyfriend, I love him and his personality so much he feels full of life... more>> and I can see why MC fell in love with him. His family is cute too, you can tell where he got his personality from. ML dad was super cute in the extras!

I loved this MC simply because he didn't make me super angry and annoyed while reading. He's funny, mature but still mischievous. He learnt from his mistakes and grew up and made different choices that made sense and it was an enjoyable read following his story.

Does ML remember their past life?

Spoiler

Yes. But it's not in the main story, it's in the first extra. We get to see what happened after MC died it's so sad I cried.

[collapse]

What are the extras?

Spoiler

extra 1 - MC's past life death/aftermath and ML getting his memories

extra 2, 3, 4 - Current life bliss

extra 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 - What if MC and ML grew up together (THIS WAS SO CUTE)

Extra 12, 13, 14 - What if MC and ML rebirth together but their first year of high school (I also loved this so much)

Author has 2 more planned extras, one involving someone getting turned into a hamster another being MC transmigrated from a ABO world with an orange pheromone that normal human ML really likes. I'm looking forward to it so much.

[collapse]

I hope you give this story a chance I really recommend it. Als0 big thank you to the translator for picking this up! <<less

Very cute! An adorable story where the MC resolves to learn from his mistakes in his past life and live a good life with his lover and family.

I respect the MC's personality here a lot. Despite being timid, pessimistic, depressive in his past life, the MC recognizes his flaws and does his best to improve himself. He's determined to protect his health and spend more time with his lover, just to find out that his lover is actually homophobic. Truly hilarious and depressing turn of events. However, all of these... more>> problems don't get him down, and our MC cautiously approaches the ML as friends. Plenty of wholesomeness, but also many ironic moments, especially when the MC overhears the ML categorically denying any interest in him, making him wonder if things could really return to how they were. Plenty of tears were shed over the course of these dramatic moments, but our ML is truly a loyal dog, regardless of how straight or homophobic he was in the past or present life.

Could only find the raws up to chap 83 when there should be like a dozen more extras. I don't mind too much about the parallel worlds, but I'm missing out on at least FOUR chapters of fluff!!! Seeking raws for chaps 84 to 89ish!! I need to see how they live together sweetly and what happens after the ML awakens his memories. <<less

2.5 stars for the first part and 4 stars for the last 30 chapters or so. I rounded up because part of my issue with this novel is my own tastes and not necessarily a reflection on the novel.

First off I will say now, I'm not usually a fan of straight to gay novels especially when one is the straight man cancer type. If you like those types of novels, this is a good one to pickup.

Secondly, the homophobic plotline made me really uncomfortable. I wish the synopsis mentioned it... more>> or I had read reviews first. I will say I love how the MC puts in to words everything I wanted to yell at ML (excerpt below with a big spoiler)

Spoiler

"...while others, like that male teacher, turn morally corrupt, becoming disgusting beyond measure.

But it's the bad people who ruin it, not the whole group, and certainly not everyone in that community.

Even straight people have their share of s*umbags—husbands who kill their wives for insurance money, or people who abandon their partners after marriage."

MC is thinking this while trying to figure out how to show the ML that there are bad apples everywhere. The ML wasn't mol*sted, but his school teacher messed with students and the teachers wife committed su*cide because of it. This lead the ML to decide that all gays were pe*verted and disgusting.

[collapse]

because of his homophobic comments I couldn't ever really love the ML. I'm happy he changed, so I did like him some by the end. I think the homophobic storyline wasn't needed and served no real purpose. Could have had the laughs and awkward moments from just his straight male cancer tendencies.

The MC was nice, I really liked him. He recognizes his weakness from his first life and tries to fix them.

Wasn't the biggest fan of how the ML realized his feelings, like it was fine, but there wasn't much to it. Felt too quick but I was tired of it dragging out so I was okay with it. Just something felt very anticlimactic about it.

Spoilers of approximate chapters of a couple major events

Spoiler

chapter 43 is when the MC finally confesses he is gay

Chapter 59 is when ML realizes he might be gay and sees the MC as more than a friend

chapter 73 is when the finally confirm their relationship

[collapse]

Translation was great, thank you translator! <<less

  • 5.0
  • VERY WHOLESOME
  • ML is a whole forest; He have all the love language you can think of.
  • I really like MC's personality too.
  • Don't really have that misunderstanding where it leads to something bad, they always talk about their feelings out. They're very open with each other
    Spoiler

BUT there's a misunderstanding when Cheng realize he is gay a and thought Shen likes his childhood but it's kinda fun and funny so I dont really mind

I had high hopes because I like stories where the MC pursues their love interest after dying once, but I think I prefer it when it's the gong, not the shou because the romantic moments just aren't the same. I just love wife chasing novels and seme protagonist for this trope, I guess.😅

I expected the gong to be more proactive since he supposedly fell in love with the shou at first sight in their first life but for some odd reason, the Author decided to play him as a "straight"... more>> guy for entirely too long. He didn't really comment anything about the mc's looks or being attracted to him at all, and he just densely kept bringing up their pure brotherhood. Idk, it just got frustrating, especially when the MC was friend zoned for so long in the novel. I don't get how he got over his "h*mophobia" to pursue the MC in the future either. There is no ground work for it? It's just a strange plot point really.

A campus romance is usually my jam, so I am pretty disappointed and the "gong" becoming bent thing is usually a trope I enjoy (I mean seizing dreams did it perfectly and the angst was on point). I'll probably try another one instead maybe " don't hide from me" with a ML who has a tad more personality to him because besides the "homophobe" angle this ML is kind of bland. The MC isn't my type of character either, he's far too passive for my taste.

Anyway, I don't think I'd recommend this novel, unless you enjoy stories with little to no angst and no romantic development until almost the end of the story. It just didn't click for me. I think maybe the green flag= green flag dynamic just made me too disinterested.

Another note, this translation is very good, so I'd definitely try out this translators other translations at the very least. <<less

How lovely.

If you’ve read ‘don’t hide from me’ this is a book heavily inspired by it but if I were to point out all of that novel’s flaws, I can only say this one is more: Logical, sweeter, wholesome and less frustrating. It basically does everything that book failed to do right.

So because of that I’ll just address a few points.

... more>> —> Chengzi’s h*mophobia.

Compared to that novel, I believe that the plotline was really decent, heart-warming even in this novel. I love how Shen Yu wanted to talk about it and get to the depth of the issue- closure. As a homos*xual myself who has a homophobic person right beside me (my sister) I still think of her as a good friend but it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth- we’re just used to it and Chengzi’s behaviour is really normal. What I love is how they tackled it and I even teared up later.

Spoiler

When Chengzi said he wished he wasn’t prejudiced or else he wouldn’t have missed out on such good friends.

[collapse]

—> Illness, rebirth and love

I love how Shen Yu has all those deep feelings inside, the consideration, the fear, everything was shown so perfectly. It was really lovely to read. These two are truly destined for each other.

I really recommend you read it, the end is beautifully wrapped up, I even cried quite a bit. <<less

This is honestly one of my favorite silly-sweet campus love stories I've read this year— (it's February... but still) ! Thank you to the translator (s) working on this novel, the translation is absolutely well done!

The MC is a sweetie who's taking his rebirth in stride—all his regrets from his first run are resolved very nicely! ML is a silly love puppy who seriously has a bad case of "straight man" syndrome (but it adds to the comedic factor of the novel really well) ! The CP falls in love... more>> with each other so naturally —with such an ease, even; they make me believe in a love that comes so easy with the right person no matter the circumstance.

Plot-wise, it's very focused on the CP's relationship and romance in general, so if you're looking for heavy world-building I'd recommend a different novel for now! Although the synopsis already mentions it, I'd like to note that ML has a prominent "straight-to-bent" arc. While I found the arc funny and silly due to similarities in personal experiences/relationships, those uncomfortable with mild mentions of (internal/external) h*mophobia, deep closeted behavior, and the concept of "straight-to-bent"—it may not be for you right now.

tl;dr: Dog food to the max! CP makes falling in love easy to imagine! Sweetness abound, highly recommended! <<less

I love it! A sweet Redemption? Both MC and ML have good character and match in heaven. Actually this kind of Troupe is common, but it still cute and still have some fresh oranges. I like their slow burn romance, kinda feel the Youth experience, sweet subtle and sometimes bold. If you like a sweet Youth romance with a lil short chapters, go on this.

Omg this story is just the cutest! It's super sweet and simple in the best way possible and it totally fits the vibe of the plot. I especially love ML~ Upbeat, sporty and full of energy. I also like MC. He had some real growth, especially when it came to his relationship with his mom. Sure, it's still a little awkward with her new family, but it was really nice to see him acknowledge his flaws and actually try to do better.

Back to the ML though. His personality really makes... more>> the story shine and honestly I think he is the reason why I had fun reading it. His way of thinking is hilarious and even when he misunderstands things, it's never in a way that hurts the MC. He's always looking out for him and trying to make sure he's okay.

All in all, this is a light and feel-good read. Perfect for when you just want to relax, laugh, and not overthink anything. :) <<less

A super cute and sweet story. The whole is really gentle and doesn’t require much mental effort. The male lead is adorable, even with his mental holes.

The ending, even though it was a bit predictable, honestly surprised me, maybe I’m just s*upid, but it really did.

It’s a very lovely and relaxed story, and it truly doesn’t need a lot of deep thinking. I’d definitely read it again.

MC revealing to ML his rebirth, and in extras ML getting his memories back too

[collapse]

But something about it just didn’t have me gleefully kicking my feet at the hard earned fluff, nor was the face slapping of MC’s father particularly satisfying; I think it’s because there wasn’t enough emotional build up on their backstories that even though there are sad parts that were told, it’s mostly in past tense and over quickly, such that the tone of the novel is largely a smooth-sailing lighthearted one. Kinda wanted to be put through the tears and come out the other end happily laughing with them.

That said, the pursuit and revelations/confessions were really cute (while strongly trying to ignore mental age gap of MC 30+ pursuing 19YO), and had all the flavours of a university romance.

Okay to reread but there are other better similar novels out there. <<less

This is such a sweet sweet novel. They're love for each other is unconditional no matter how their rebirths went, they would always choose each other. I'm glad the MC was able to make the changes so he could be with the ML for a long time and to clear the misunderstanding with his mom. The ML is such a silly lovable character, he's treated the MC differently from the get go thinking it was just being best friends. I'm a huge fan of transmigration and rebirth novels, and this has become one of my faves. It's a very simple read, and the angst is minimal with the issues of the past being resolved fairly easily, which I think was nice ❤️

The main and side characters in this story were really cute, and I loved all their interactions. I love how the parents (except MC's toxic dad) were supportive of them allthroughout, their friends being so fun and not judgemental, and just the overall vibe of this novel... more>> was truly lovely.

The character growth of the MC from the beginning really touched me. I loved that he worked really hard to make sure things are better this time around and keeping vigilant and reflective of his previous life's mistakes, insecurities and issues - making sure he deals with them better in this life... in this second chance. Absolutely delightful❤️

The end of the main story I felt was kinda abrupt, like suddenly reading "The End", I was like, wait... BUTTT the extras did make up for the sudden ending and it truly completed the whole novel and made into something so wonderful. I love the "IF" storylines, and I'm so happy there were a few. It truly made the whole world bring such a wider perspective on what would have happened if... it was truly lovely and it felt so complete after reading.

I highly recommend this. <<less

Highly recommend. My heart clenched a few times in slow burn fashion. I really want to read the extras! I adored this novel. I love MC. And ML is just.. So funny to me. He’s a silly puppy top lover lol. I wish we could see how they’re like when they’re older and not just the flashbacks. I’m curious how ML was like since MC mentioned he was more mature in some ways. Anyway, thank you to the translator for translating this gem! Super appreciated. The translator has nice translation... more>> too. <<less

A super sweet read! Its mainly fluff and silly misunderstandings here and there (which the misunderstandings didn't make me annoyed). There's a small bit of angst, not too much, and I liked how they would navigate their troubles! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this because it felt like it was the perfect length. Everything tied together and didn't feel rushed or dragged-on with even the side stories making it perfect. The side stories gave enough ifs and more extras after the main story, so it was a really nice way to... more>> end it! Definitely recommend if you wanna read something sweet that can be finished in a day or so! <<less

Green + Green = Super green?

The story is very sweet (fluffy warm feelings) and both MC and ML are such green flags! No unnecessary toxic drama, they're both incredibly considerate of each other's feelings.

MC and ML met by chance in their mid twenties. They fall in love and ML boldly makes the first move. Just a few years later MC falls sick and dies, the last thing he heard is ML crying. When MC wakes up, he's 18 have gone back in time (ML's 19). This time he's focused on... more>> taking care of his health, not overworking himself physically and mentally like in the past, while also making a plan to meet ML earlier so they'll get to spend even more time together.

Given the tragedy that MC passed away from illness, and that he's taken aback to re-lice the tough past he grew up with, the story is surprisingly not very angsty except that one extra where we get to follow ML's POV after MC's death.

Having been given a second chance, MC can let go of grievances and burdens that shackled him in the past. Such as holding back because of worries about what other people would think, that relying on someone else doesn't always come at a price and with regret, and his own feelings of insecurity where he felt like he had to prove himself for ML's sake (but now knows that what makes ML love him is something he can do by just existing as himself and being by his side, and that's enough).

For example:
Spoiler

MC grew up poor, while ML had generational wealth. They often got into disputes about MC overworking himself, at the price of his health and time to spend with ML, which ML felt was not worth it. While ML spent money on MC and other expenses to an extent MC felt was unnecessary and didn't sit right with him. Now MC has come to the realization that him trying not to rely too much on ML, and avoiding his family in fear of damaging their view of ML, did nothing but make them both feel troubled and led them nowhere That carrying financial burdens he doesn't have to because of pride and shame will just make them unhappier and the most of the worries that fueled his stubbornness were based on fears that would never happen. He learns to acknowledge that ML feels happy to help him, the same way he feels happy when helping ML, and most of the arguments in the last now just feel petty and meaningless.

MC also learns to overcome his feelings of inferiority towards ML (he never puts blame on ML but it makes him loath himself, which affect both him and ML). MC feels that ML spends to much money on him, to the point it makes him feel undeserving and insecure because he feels that he can't offer him the same. He once knitted a scarf for ML which ML greatly treasured, but he felt that it looked tacky compared to the luxury brand clothes ML wore so he took on more work and saved up to give him something "better". Now he can see that their view on the value of money is different and understand that what ML appreciates is not necessarily the same as what he does, basically them having different love languages. In the past it was his own insecurity speaking for ML and not ML himself, now he knits scarf again and feels warmth instead of shame when ML wears it.

[collapse]

I liked that they both were different in the original timeline and in the new one. That meeting each other earlier changed them both and not just ML. Through love that was always there, they could work out things together. That if ML in the different time lines can be seen as two different people, they both got to know and love two different versions of MC while they're both still the same to the core. As ML said about his other self when speaking about comparison/jealousy:

"Feng Mofei will always love Shen Yu"

I really liked the way the time traveled was handled. That MC went back in time, while "his" ML's life continued in that universe after MC's passing. It was a perfect level of bittersweet. Bitter in the way that the original ML was the only one who missed out on being with MC in the future, but sweet in the way that in the other timelines they were always together. And that it was all because of: (spoiler)

Spoiler

The actions of the original ML who prayed so deeply that MC would get a happy ending with him. While grieving, but because of loving, the hope of it could make his breaking heart a little lighter. He didn't believe in fortune telling or shamans, but he wanted to believe in hope and in his grandma. Now he believes in MC.

[collapse]

Another thing that I liked, also about the how the timelines were handled:

Spoiler

I really appreciated the chapter about ML's perspective after MC died. It's not often talked about, treated as if that timeline just disappeared the moment the one who went back wakes up. But I always find myself thinking about that we can never truly know if that's really the case. The combination of different timelines AND alternative universes at the same time is really fascinating. It also makes what happens before the time travel more real, that the person left behind is still just as real as any other.

I also liked that the extas were about separate alternate scenarios after traveling back in time, instead of a sequence of scenarios following future lives after each other).

[collapse]

I was really intrigued by how ML's case of h*mophobia would be portrayed. From the description, it's kind of framed as something lightheaded and comedic, because we know they'll end up together and it's just a case of how to get there. It's actually really well-written, especially compared to the "I have finally come to terms with that I have feelings for you, even though I though of myself as straight, which mean.... I'm only gay for you". It just screams internalized, and still externalized, h*mophobia and it's often framed as the "straight" person making some kind of noble sacrifice by giving up the "normal"/"easy" path for the sake of the person they love. So what happens is basically:
Spoiler

MC's first instinct is to learn why ML is homophobic. Instead of drowning in self-deprecation and taking it as an attack against him and their past relationship (with angst and misunderstandings where one feel hurt and there's no communication for far too many chapters), he knows and trusts the love ML had for him and just genuinely wants to know why he is homophobic so he can help him overcome it.

MC soft launches ML to subtle exposure, to which ML doesn't react well (literally even throwing up). MC feels that ML is scared and uncomfortable, but that there's a pattern of bad interactions that lead to bad reactions. He eventually figures out ML has had a bad experience in the past (his middle school teacher preyed on minors, such as in his class, which also drove his wife to attempt to k herself). It's honestly more glossed over than it should be. It's said that ML was the top student in the class, but was never *ssulted, the reason being basically that he couldn't be groomed because he wasn't interested. Even if that's the case (which is a lot of victim blaming, especially regarding a pdf with middle schoolers), just imagine how horrifying it must feel to find out your teacher was/is a pdf who's prayed on your classmates, only interested in the same gender, and you're the top student in said class of that gender. Being that young it's understandable that a connection is made (even if it's subconscious) from such a the traumatic experience.

MC manages to prove to ML, by helping him come to the conclusion himself, that there are bad people of all s*xual orientations and that good people are not limited to being straight. First by introducing friends, then eventually dropping hints for ML to find out that he's gay as well, after making sure ML's belief in him as a friend and as a non-evil person is solid enough.

MC soft launches everything and doesn't want to scare ML away or make go through shock or feel betrayed/deceived. ML is actually a really good person and reacts surprisingly well after some exposure. He wants to be considerate of MC's feelings and when he finds out he makes sure to tell him their friendship is still as deep. He acts a bit different in the beginning, but that's because he's trying to be more considerate after reflecting on all his "friendly bromance" he's shown before. He regrets acting like that, but only because he thinks MC's feelings might've been hurt or that MC must've through his actions were inconsiderate.

While MC's figuring out when and how to confess his feelings, ML starts thinking about how their relationship will change when MC finds a partner one day. At first he wants to protect MC from other people and their impure intentions, now having to worry about boys and girls, and eventually he figures the most effective solution would be if MC was in a relationship with someone he'd approve of. Then he concludes by his train of thoughts that he wants to spend all his time with MC and wants MC to spend the most time with him, which lands him on that the best way would be if he was the one who dated MC.

ML goes through a crisis. MC drops hints about confessing. ML thinks it's someone else MC is planning to confess to and advices him not to and how he's better at judging character so MC should introduce him to ML first. Meanwhile MC asks how ML would like to be confessed to, to which ML answers that there's no need for gifts, love letters, flowers, etc. in hope of MC needing more time to think about how to confess.

ML ends up confessing first, after soft launching that he thinks he might be gay to that he's sure of it so MC won't think it's an impulsive decision made on confusion and know he's sincere. MC takes out his bouquet of orange peels that aligns with how ML said he'd want to be confessed to (thinking MC wouldn't go to such an extent). ML hands him flowers and a long heartfelt love letter, MC reads it while ML regrets dismissing the idea when MC was gathering information about how to confess. MC has written in a dairy since the day they first met, which he shares with ML similar to a love letter. It doesn't start out vert sweet, with ML being homophobic and all, but he's able to see how MC feels about him and how their love has grown over time.

To summarize, a good story that's mostly sweet and funny, but also handles deep subjects very well. It's entertaining the whole way through, with a satisfying ending that does the story and the characters justice. The extas are not necessary to read, but they're just as good and one part does add a bit more depth to their relationship. As a whole, it has everything that's needed to be the right amount of interesting. Even thought it's just under 100 chapters, the experience reading it felt short and sweet. Easily 5/5 starts, the same way the story was easy to get through (in a good way). <<less

I love this so muchhh!!! (≧▽≦) So fluffy and no angst at all! There's some tears being shed tho, the author showed us what happened after shen yu died, I literally sobbing reading cheng mofei's misery (。•́︿•̀。)

I love how both of their family is supportive, mama shen such a cutie to her child, I also found it adorable that papa cheng blushing seeing MC kissed ML's cheek.

Also I love the extra chapter, so many "if" that I feel satisfied and think there's no need for more chapter.

If the author... more>> give us more I don't mind tho! ( ꈍᴗꈍ) <<less

Honestly the fluffiest fluff, the ML being so so in love with the protagonist but being so slow cause "he's homophobic", its honestly so funny, the perfect amount of comedy, fluff romance and feels, feels like a slow burn, the yearning OMG 10/10 would buy a physical copy
