This novel was incredible, the only thing I probably regret is not starting sooner.

I'm not sure on what to start, the author did an amazing job at portraying PTSD and isn't afraid of adding casualties to the story (most novels would literally have a world disaster crisis moment/arc but the aftermath harm is so minimal that you wouldn't think it was that threatening; they just say a few civilians died, it's really unrealistic)

The relationship and the affection between the characters are well written, so much so that it made... more>> it hard for me to press next chapter because I just wanted to watch them enjoy themselves like normal people without having to fight for survival everyday

I love how Hilde is so loved and adored by almost everyone (especially by seniors he doesn't know) Hilde deserves the world!

Hilde lost a lot of things so he's deeply wounded but won't confess that to anyone ever (tho hey see through him so no point in hiding it) the presence of people certainly helps Hilde heal

And Every character development here is top tier, like, yes! finally characters that feel alive

Spoiler

Sophia lost her husband in a mission and blamed Ye-hyeon for this, she began hating him and the creatures (titans) and when she found out about Hilde being one of them, she threatened him and said that she will kill him "accidentally"

After a while being together in the same team, Sophia saw that Hilde's story wasn't a lie, he was really trying his best to fight against Kyle and recover his memories, so Sophia began thinking with herself that she needs to change too and her thinking and hatred are a problem

She later flips 180

and began worrying about Hilde like Ricardo and the other seniors, she holds affection for Hilde in her own way and I adore it

you really need to see how much hatred she had for the titans, she couldn't even see clearly because of her madness and sadness about her loss, but then Hilde's presence taught her that her way of life isn't the answer (she apologized to Ye-hyeon and admitted that it was the most logical choice, she was blinded by grief that she couldn't see that Ye-hyeon was hurting/grieving alongside her)

[collapse]

Spoiler

Hilde (the MC) is such a strong willed person, I swear every time something related to him gets brought up my heart aches for him. (Like a flashback when he was a knight with Ray and Kyle, that absolutely destroys me)

Hilde does a fantastic job and he's super smart (a different kind of smart from Yoon) that I admire him, like woah he's so ruthless that I wondered if that's the same silly Hilde I know

Spoiler

The moment he got familiar with Earth He Literally began k*lling politicians and people of high power that are a threat to his people (the titans) one by one without mercy (he earned the nickname Michael and people started warning their descendants that he's more dangerous than Kyle and to get away from him very fast because he's an angel of death and if you see him, know your time is up, how much did Hilde do to make them like that...)

Can you imagine the corrupted politicians getting swatted like flies and Hilde literally changed everything while being in the shadows

Gave Ye-hyeon/humanity his sword because he knew Ray would hesitate (!? How could anyone even think that, maybe that's just me but that's a very smart move and it really worked, this also shows Hilde's strong resolve even if he wept about it for a long time, it was the only right choice left)

Faked his death to escape the fame and attention of people so that the Elder wouldn't use that as a way to hinder Hilde (he cut off his limbs to make it convincing, imagine the surprise from everyone ^^)

He's was so malicious and sly even Colton admired him and made Colton so obsessed with him (Colton's obsession is also the reason to ruin many many lives... hmm I would say he ruined everyone's life on Earth)

There's more but anyways

[collapse]

What I admire about Hilde is that Hilde wasn't born to lead, (even his master from the previous world said he's not born to be a swordmaster because it's a cruel path for someone soft hearted like Hilde) Hilde is a very soft affectionate person, and because of that it becomes a blessing and a curse at the same time, I really love the affectionate side of Hilde and his love for humanity makes his character stand out more

Being a leader is a really cruel path for Hilde, he had to make the right choices that would determine everyone's fate while himself being in pain because of the choice, like he's hurting and he knows it, . but what can he do, he has many responsibilities

The reason I'm saying these things about Hilde is because I understand his character and his struggles, I find it amazing how despite literally being in rock bottom, he always picks himself up and pushes forward for the people he loves

Spoiler

He Literally lost all of his memories and despite that he felt he needed to get back as soon as possible because he felt people needed him!!

The world setting in this novel is really interesting, I really love the concept of

Spoiler

Vine leafs (?) / The sixth sense of the titans, it really made me jealous that I didn't have one

The fact they can transfer emotions between each other is amazing (every time Hilde blushes while talking about the sixth sense makes me laugh)

A bit more informative summary:

One day, portals to other worlds opened on earth and monsters, dubbed as "creatures" by humanity, poured in. They took over many areas and pushed humanity to a corner. To fight against these creatures and reclaim lost lands, the organization Black Badger was established. It was a type of military organization made up of soldiers with body enhancement that gives them super strength, quick regeneration, and halts the aging process of the body.

50 years since then, the main character Hildebert almost literally popped out of... more>> thin air within the headquarters of Black Badger. He had an enhanced body like that of a badger, yet no information on him was available anywhere in their database. With no memories and nothing on him but the clothes on his back, Hilde more or less had no choice but to join the organization.

Personally, everything about this novel is peak, but I'll try to pick points that may interest other into reading.
    • The main character: Hildebert as a main character is so refreshing, especially when compared to other fantasy novel MCs. He's clever, quick-witted, self-aware, and most importantly, he's painfully grounded to reality. He's a kind person who will be cruel even to his loved ones if necessary. With enough justification, he's unafraid to use any means in his disposal to reach his goals, even if it ends up hurting himself or others. Although, if damage is unavoidable, the ideal situation for him is if he's the only one who's injured, because he's confident that he won't die. His badger seniors are always upset when he does it, and he'll apologize for worrying them, but he'll end up doing the same thing again when the situation calls for it.

      Example:

      Spoiler

Hilde was in a situation where he had to fake his death. So he willingly allowed the enemy side to detain him and when the time was right, cut off his own right hand and left foot as biological evidence of his "death", then killed off all the enemies in the building. He did this without telling a single person uninvolved with his current operation, including his godson and his longtime friend. They had to find out from news outlets about his "death" and were left in a frenzy, unsure if he's really dead or still alive.

      [collapse]
    • Writing: The author is really good at playing with the readers' emotion. They're able to change the mood of the story so naturally I find myself dumbfounded because I could be sobbing at the start of a chapter yet by the end I'm forced to laugh because something comical happened. Also, there's the fact that they drop foreshadowing so well that you don't even know it was there until the reveal. Rereading the novel becomes a whole new experience because now you realize the seeds had, in fact, been planted from the very beginning of the novel, only to be revealed hundreds of chapters later. Example:

      Spoiler

In the beginning, Hilde is completely useless in using firearms. This has been treated as more or less a running gag throughout the series, as his main weapon is a sword. Roughly 200+ chapters later it was revealed that the reason he can't handle the gun is because a child dear to him was shot the same way he had assassinated an enemy leader.

      [collapse]
    • Cast: All the characters have their own distinct traits that makes it easy to separate and recognize their roles. But what I find interesting is that most of the cast, including the "antagonists", are never seen in a strictly black-and-white perspective. They're so fleshed out that even when you don't agree or sympathize with their actions, you can still understand them to an extent. Also, supporting characters are utilized to the utmost. Plot-relevant characters don't just show up once and then never mentioned again. The story will occasionally remind you of their existence, often in the most painful ways possible, to cement the fact that they, in part, are responsible for why things had spiraled to the current situation. Example:

      Spoiler

Ray, a character that had died prior to the start of the story and therefore never appeared in the present. Yet his presence constantly haunts the narrative, appearing when you least expect it. Another example is Kishis, also someone who only appeared in flashbacks. His presence is most prevalent whenever we are reminded of why Hilde work so hard to protect his compatriots.

      [collapse]
Any romance? No. I know this element sometimes make or break a novel for some people (including me) so there you have it. But the author is not shy in including some "bromance" elements if you get my drift. Some of them are the "blink and you'll miss it" type while others are the "really? In front of my salad?" type.

That's all from me. Hope this little review will somewhat convince others to read Black Badger :) <<less

The cover is misleading. So far MC feels innocent and kind, while my expectation was some cool/smart/badass MC from the cover. I also expect some dark and serious post-apocalyptic world, but everyone MC met is friendly so far--Which is a bit weird considering their military background and MC is super suspicious individual who appeared out of nowhere. But then again maybe it's too early to judge since the higher-up seems to know something about MC, and the others might just believed the higher-up's vision.

The novel vibe is similar to "What... more>> Happens When the Second Male Lead Powers Up".

The writing itself is what you often find in webnovel. There's a lot of dialogues which kind of redundant sometimes and little information about the environment. For some reason, nearly every men MC met is "handsome", MC could describe their fair eyes, pleasant cologne, and appearance, but never did the same for the female characters (except maybe Amy). <<less

this novel is so fun to read to the point that I cannot put down.

There is no time to feel bored since events happen one after another. Once I felt relieved that an accident ended well, out of the blue, author drops a bomb out of nowhere such as revealing a piece of the past.

The fights scenes are well-written, and emotions are vividly felt while reading: ... more>>
Spoiler

sadness and regret from the MC after ray died can be felt and you can't help but be emotional. Sometimes it is so sad to see the trio of the past become scattered, one die and two point the sword to each other because of Ray's death. Can't we just live together forever? They deserve it.. TT

[collapse]

And the past isn't reveal at once, the plot builds up and the past reveal slowly one by one. At the end, all the pieces fall together.

There is no romance at all, and the character dynamics are quite fun.

Halide is quite sacrificial and sometime depressed. But he is quite cute and warm. He loves peace ofc, and very affectionate. But whenever he goes out, trouble finds him or he find it.
Spoiler

as soon as he arrive to black badger headquarters, he almost die from a monster attack which is by rescuing a child... From that chapter, I realized that he is going to be sacrificial a lot and he author doesn't disappoint.

[collapse]

Yoon is one of my fav, he is a psychopath, and handle the chaos from Halide without blinking an eye. Ofc, sometimes even Yoon get dumbfounded or surprised of the trouble Halide brought lol. But he is quite warm to people he loves. Love Ami and Yehyun as well, they are just a wholesome family.

And I may be crazy but Colton is also another character that makes the story more thrilling. The dynamics between him and Halide is quite well... Frenemy? Idk. But yeah he is definitely a character that make the story more exciting.
Spoiler

ofc the last chapter I read, Halide is fighting against Colton while faking his death. His seniors are angry about that lol. Well Colton deserve it but I secretly hope he doesn't die...

[collapse]

Spoiler

Lastly Kyle... he is an idiot, can't you just trust Halide once? And ray, he is just an innocent person... Ray, you should have survived and stop the war between Kay and Halide. Sometimes, I wish Ray would be alive.. since I hadn't finish till the ending, I can't say definitely but I think Kyle will die at Halide hands TT

The main character is hard to tolerate. He is indecisive, always 2nd guessing himself, and apologizes for everything even when it's not his fault. This is not an action story, but a story more focused on character interaction. The main character is so meek that it's 40 chapters in and he still can't do anything. I looked up the author, and she is a woman who concentrates more on social issues and fantasy for her stories. If you are looking for action, then skip this novel.
