Fernan Pellenberg, the young heir to House Pellenberg—one of the Empire’s most prestigious noble families—is a top student at the Imperial Academy. Yet his reputation rests on something far less admirable: an all-consuming obsession with money. A ruthless profiteer, Fernan acknowledges only those who can line his pockets and views the entire world through the cold calculus of profit and loss. His shameless avarice makes him a pariah amongst his peers.

Then one day, without warning, calamity strikes. As Fernan’s consciousness begins to slip away, something sinister attempts to invade and seize control of his mind. Through sheer force of will, he manages to expel the intruder—but at what cost?

Was this divine retribution for his greed?

From that moment onwards, Fernan begins experiencing strange visions: a prophetic tome materialises before him, revealing glimpses of the future. And not just any future—but a harrowing prophecy foretelling the end of the world itself.

To be honest, I'm a little confused about the extremely low rating, because I really like this novel. Is it because of the protagonist?

It's true that Fernan is a jerk, but it's kind of a breath of fresh air to me. In D&D terms, his alignment is questionable. I'd say he's either lawful neutral or lawful evil, with his law specifically being the law of gold (bribes, blackmails, and threats all being on the table as part of his personal law). As long as it doesn't conflict with his own... more>> interests, he has no problem dragging whole noble lineages into the mud for a pretty penny (though, to be fair, it was his father who schemed to put said family in that position, Fernan had no qualms putting pressure on them). When he realizes a member of that family might be instrumental in saving his own hide in the future, he's suddenly much more accommodating with the debt's interest rate. His main goal isn't to save the world, but to save himself, but one requires the other. Helping those who will save the world becomes more profitable to him than earning gold he's likely to lose in the future (though he does scheme and use his 'book of prophecy' for both endeavors).

Speaking of the book of prophecy in his mind, as well as the soul that nearly took him over in the prologue, it seems obvious to me that it was a transmigrator who was going to have a typical 'reincarnated into a cannon fodder villain, I work hard to change my image, steal from/befriend the hero, and save the world' plot. Unfortunately for whoever that was, Fernan noticed and evicted him on sight, lol.

I do love that part in particular. I certainly wouldn't want some random stranger possessing me while I'm still breathing, either. If the person you transmigrate into has died somehow, that's all well and good, but when it's for no reason, I always wonder what happened to the original owner and am only rarely given an answer. So, good on Fernan for defending himself well. He's a jerk, but only hardcore villains deserve their existence basically erased.

The people around Fernan aren't idiots, either. His changes are suspicious to many, and because the enemy keeps targeting him to take the fall for their actions, he has to move exceedingly cautiously. At the same time, he does his best to have the hero, Aint (whose name bothers me. Aint ain't it) grow even faster than the prophecy states.

As far as the romantic subplot goes, there isn't much of one so far. The hero Aint likes this strong swordswoman (the girl whose noble family is indebted to Fernan's family) who is destined to help him fight the demons. That's it. Fernan made her blush once recently, accidentally dropping a line that could be misconstrued as flirting, but I don't think they're going to be a thing. It'll take a lot longer than this if they do, because Fernan has 0 interest in girls, and they all have the correct notion he's no good, so I think it'll mostly be about Aint rather than Fernan. Fernan is growing on her, but I don't think it's romantic in nature, so at most, a misunderstanding of a love triangle.

All that to say...a s*umbag MC, but no gross harem! Wooo! My bottom line is when a guy plays with and used a girl's feelings for his own gain. 'I'm Not A Reincarnator', a novel I really loved to a point, was guilty of that. I love scheming, con artist MCs the most. The best ones are like Cale Henituse from tr*sh of the Count's Family, whose alignment is definitely chaotic good. Second best is this one, scheming for himself but reaching a net gain for the world and becoming a hero despite himself. I don't usually like villain protagonists, but Fernan is more of a cannon fodder following daddy's orders, who was schemed against without his knowledge in the original setting. Watching him rise up and out-scheme his enemies is incredibly satisfying.

I admit the opening chapters are a bit slow, but I really think this novel is a diamond in the rough. Give it a chance if you want romanceless action adventure, mystery, and a little political intrigue with a healthy dose of scheming. <<less

This is pretty good read. Still lacking for some parts, but it concluded well. I wish for more though.

Fernan is not a perfect MC, which is nice. His traits as greedy merchant guy overwhelmed his genius.

Spoiler

Even others in his house admitted him being extraordinary since childhood. He's an extremely talented mage. But later it balance a bit as he shown more of his skills as a strategist. And later, he's not holding back his mage skills.

[collapse]

Spoiler

He learned magic from his mother and family mage, both are strong. His mother is OP. She hidden so well that none outside of her close associates knows.

[collapse]

From the story about his family, long time ago they're always greedy, so that's his family traits. Hardly anyone surrounding MC are normal lol. Perhaps Aint (prophecy protagonist) among few that's more normal than them. He's quite cautious, makes calculation, preparations for any "just in case". It's his family traits too but receiving prophecy book and see his ruin amplified it. It's makes sense,
Spoiler

it turned out he was framed for the things he'll never did.

[collapse]

He prepare, counterattack.. If changes happened beyond his calculation he changes his method or makes decisions based on situations.

What I like is that Fernan actually makes people around him gets strong, even stronger than themselves in prophecy. He recruit, invest more talented people but failed to rise according to prophecy.
Spoiler

In the 2nd half of the story, he grows stronger too, his plan as supporter change.

[collapse]

Romance is in main tag but feels like subplot. The romance bloom a little more in 2nd half of the novel. Not much, they just show more affection openly.

There are three end couple:

Spoiler

Fernan x Luina

Ain't x Yuli

Verian x Aria

[collapse]

It's not harem so it's good to me. But I wish there's more of their interactions. It's one of the lacking parts, especially in 2nd half of the novel. It feels disjointed; no matter if it's lovers, friendship or relationship some characters have in common.

Sorry for so many spoiler tags. I don't know which one is spoiler, which one is not so I test the tag. The tags didn't work properly lol.

Also Wooden is cute. Wonder how it looks like in manhwa later. <<less

There are many things I like about this novel, but most have been covered by reviewer Ichigoeater.

One good thing I particularly want to highlight is that moving the narrative along doesn't ever destroy the story's characters. The narrative is strong enough to move along without having to bend our Main Character to its will (like some novels do) nor does it bend around our Main Character to get him involved in a silly way. Everything is beautifully constructed and works to move forward like a well-oiled machine without ever bending... more>> or breaking our characters' personalities.

Speaking of personality, when I think of our MC (Fernan) AFTER reading, the first description that comes to mind is "money grubbing bastard." Now you may think, why is this such a big deal? Doesn't the novel summary specifically call him as such? Well, if you've been around in the deep canals of web novels for a while, you may notice that typically, protagonists that fall into this type of non-standard category (i.e., said to have villainous or otherwise gray area behavior patterns) end up falling into Holy Mother or Savior types of characters as the story progresses. Not a bad thing on its own (it really just shows to me how hard it is to write these types of characters and keep the story moving) but it just flattens the initial attempt at a cool, unique character. This story DOES NOT have this! I actually agree with the sentiment that our MC Fernan would do anything (with a bottom line) for more coin; I think he'd even marry money if he had the chance! And this story is all the better for it!

Not to mention the initial cool concept of being on the other side of a transmigration story, where the possessor fails to possess the target, who then gets a "prophecy" of the future. So cool! I particularly like that they tackle the prophecy aspect in a similar manner to tr*sh of the Count's Family, specifically to how as they change the story, the initial timeline becomes less useful as a direct guide, and more of a reference. There is a difference, specifically how Cale (TCF) has full pre-knowledge that ends at a specific point, while Fernan is still receiving information in bites, of which I think both types work well in their respective stories. I think in this story, Fernan generally realizes this point (and is pointed out to us readers) somewhere around
Spoiler

chapters 130-140? If my memory is correct.

[collapse]

Bonus points for the fact the possession plot line isn't dropped, and
Spoiler

the possessor takes over a different body, who Fernan eventually makes contact with.

[collapse]

I can't wait to read further, so if neither of the current translation websites end up releasing locked (paid) chapters for free, I may end up going back to Kakao with my 50 alternative accounts to finish the 250 or so remaining chapters.

All in all, I like this story very much, and it gets a 5 in my heart, so I'm rating it a 5! <<less

If you read one of these you read them all. Typical MC who uses his future knowledge to do things except the story telling is just bland. You never get the chance to actually feel with the MC its just like when your are a child and your mother takes you shopping. You have no idea what is going on but mom knows so just shut it and follow.
