Disguised as a man, Xu Jiao entered the Eastern Palace at a young age to serve as a companion reader. After the Son of Heaven ascended the throne, Xu Jiao rose step by step through the ranks, starting from a Compiler in the Hanlin Academy to the highest rank among officials and serving as the Prime Minister in the court.

Everyone in court knew Emperor Yuan openly favoured Zai Xiang. It was also well known that Xu Xiang had a few hundred terrible tempers each month and a notoriously petty nature. Yet, there always seemed to be some foolishly fearless officials who even dared to submit memorials of impeachment against the Xiang Ye.

Emperor Yuan stated, “If she is so capable, then let her roll back here and manage Our imperial harem for Zhen.”

[Mini-Theatre One]

Whenever a new official enters the court, even the Minister of Personnel will personally offer guidance:

“The first rule of being an official: don’t provoke Prime Minister Xu!”

“Back in the Eastern Palace, Minister Xu served as His Majesty’s study companion, assistant instructor and secretary. The two of them… Well, they ate and slept together. Every month, there’d always be a few days when his temper got especially nasty—he even dared to argue with His Majesty.”

“He’s also incredibly petty, like a needle, no matter how trivial the matter, no matter how long ago it happened, he’ll remember it…”

“So don’t be fooled into thinking that just because His Majesty occasionally strips Minister Xu of his title, he’s really fallen out of favour. That’s just the two of them sulking. Honestly, Minister Xu being out of court is even scarier than him being in it…”

[Mini-Theatre Two]

Years later, the civil and military officials sighed in regret: “Minister Xu was truly dedicated; he exhausted his mind and body, handled everything personally, and in the end, died from overwork. We all misunderstood him before! Fortunately, His Majesty is someone who cherishes old bonds. Though Minister Xu is gone, his younger sister remains. That, at least, is some form of comfort…”

Xu Jiao: “Comfort your damn uncle! May your whole family die from overwork! This Prime Minister will never die!”

This story, in my mind, does a really good job of fleshing out the world and the characters within. It reads really well as a country management story, especially since the two main leads are in charge of their country, even though there are certainly arcs in which that takes a backseat. The romance moves at a decent pace, in which they both confess and accept each other's romantic feelings at a comparatively early point in the overall story, but the final getting together (marriage into the royal family) takes... more>> a while to get to. If you want a completely romance-focused story, this is not the one for you. It's focused more on the country as a whole, but without super over the top drama and dog blood moments, and I personally think that all the events that happen make sense on a world level for them to occur, which is the most you could ask for from any country management story.

Also all the introduced characters feel so human, what with their flaws and their redemptions or downfalls, and just seeing everyone able to progress through and keeping an eye on reoccurring characters was so nice. Do wish there were a few more female reoccurring characters, but I guess since FL works mostly with men in a patriarchic system, it makes sense there are less women she gets to know personally. And none of the other women are looked down by the story to elevate the FL, which I am also glad for.

It strikes a decent balance between funny, sweet, and the more serious beats and moments. It lures you in with the romance sweetness quite early on, and by the time romance takes a backseat to conducting new types of national exams and rearranging the court you're somehow still engrossed, and just sitting and waiting to see how these two manage to actually get together.

I also really like FL. She's smart from all the years of studying and learning and managing the country by the emperor's side, and she's not a damsel in distress propped by the emperor and the plot. As a modern person born into this country, (this is mentioned super early on,) the transmigration doesn't really stand out much but does give her a plausible reason at why she has such a more flexible worldview and can think of things that others may not, as well as why she dares to even do all the cross-dressing and prime ministering. She's efficient at her job of running the country, and she cares about both country and king, which is why she puts so much effort into it.

In addition, I also really liked the romance. Of course I had my typical emperor ML misgivings, but this guy is not a bad guy. As the emperor, he of course has to balance his affections for her and the country, but he does a good job at it, even if towards the end it starts skewing a bit more towards her. He's also actually a good emperor too. Their history is sweet and built up from countless hours spent with each other, to the point where FL governs the country in his absence because he knows that she's the only one who will act as he does. And while I love a good harem drama as much as the next person, I really like the way that this relationship stands on equal ground between the two of them, where the emperor respects her and her thoughts and decisions as a person. When they start getting serious, he even considers how to make her both the prime minister and the empress at the same time, just because he knows that she would be upset if she was forced to give up her job to marry him. I spent a good half of the story wondering how the author would manage to keep this equal dynamic as they get married, because of course FL wouldn't be able to keep her position if she becomes the empress, and the author did mostly a good job of it. It didn't feel like FL was torn and forced to not work to become the empress, but more like it was a nice retirement after the wild stuff that occurred, and whenever the emperor goes on trips around the country she can continue to terrorise the court.

Here are my thoughts on some of the arcs that I can remember right now:

Spoiler

The hot spring palace arc was very sweet in developing their feelings for each other, even if I wasn't entirely sure of the politics that got them there because my MTL was weird and I was lazy to read it in Chinese. Really furthered their feelings, and had me really worrying about how they'll get along after they were out of this sanctuary part of their lives. A lot of the story has a little bit of underlying tension about how things will turn out, but the tension never gets so much that it gets annoying and unresolved, because what the author sets up, they deliver.

The other transmigrator prince visiting arc was cool in the way it showed FL interacting with more of the world around, and I just really like the prince. It also set up so much later story, which I loved. Big fan of how author will mention things to follow up with later.

Didn't really like the arc (?) right before her faked death where her mother was super against the marriage, and I spent most of that time really wondering how things would be able to move forward, since it all felt like it was at a standstill. I felt her mother was being obstinate being against the emperor purely because of his position, and not even considering him as a person in all the years that he's known FL and how he's treated her in all that time. Also disliked FL a little for thinking about breakup a little purely because of her mom, when it just felt like her mom was being unreasonable, but I can understand why since her mom's opinion weighs so heavy in her heart. Big props to the emperor though for not being like f*ck you I'll just marry her anyways, because he could have easily done that, but instead respected her mother enough to not.

The faked death and failed coup leading up to it was kinda crazy, as well as how she survived it. The entire time she spent working in the transmigrator prince's court made sense as repayment, and worked as a really good way of pushing the story from the standstill and showing the emperor exactly he cares about her, as well as introducing the feminist idea of female court officials to the emperor, which helped with the ending compromise. Really like how the world got expanded even more when she was in this new country, because the author is really good at world-building.

Honestly, the final surprise invasion of the border town arc felt a little like the story just getting pushed longer, but I am a sucker for a full circle where loose ends get tied up, and a lot of loose ends got tied up really nicely with that arc, concluding several different character arcs. I did like just how much the FL had to use her wits and proved once again that she cared so deeply for the people of her country to just barely avoid death several times, and the final reunion between her and the emperor was absolutely amazing. It did help the ending where the FL doesn't really go into court anymore feel less like something robbed from her and more like a nice retirement, because if I had to do that I'd also decide that I was allowed to stop working too.

I really like this story. I read it like I had to breathe for a week straight, and as someone who doesn't really like to reread, I can't wait to see how the translator translates it, and read it in english proper. <<less
