The mission had failed.

Resting his chin in his hand, Bai Jiu stared blankly at the sky, utterly unable to understand how things had turned out this way.

He had clearly followed the plot exactly as required. Shen Wuyou, the male protagonist, had personally stabbed him through the heart. By all logic, Bai Jiu should have returned to the real world the moment he died.

So why, when he opened his eyes again, had he awakened ten years later—still inside the world of the novel?

This world was a cultivation novel.

According to the original storyline, Shen Wuyou was destined to rise step by step to become the Sword Sect’s leader before ultimately ascending to immortality and achieving the perfect ending reserved for protagonists.

As for Bai Jiu?

He was nothing more than a minor cannon-fodder character.

Although Shen Wuyou accepted him as a direct disciple, Bai Jiu’s identity as a demon ultimately sealed his fate. In the end, he was meant to die beneath Shen Wuyou’s sword, becoming merely another stepping stone on the protagonist’s path to ascension.

That was why no matter how cruelly Shen Wuyou treated him—whether tearing out his demon core or driving a sword through his abdomen—Bai Jiu accepted it all without complaint, always wearing that same carefree, heartless smile.

At least, that’s what he told himself.

If not for the kiss he left on Shen Wuyou’s face at the very end, just before the story concluded…

Bai Jiu might truly have believed he felt nothing at all.

In order to return to reality, Bai Jiu accepts the system’s mission once again.

Wasn’t the task simply to make Shen Wuyou sever all emotional attachments and abandon every lingering feeling?

Easy enough.

But the moment Bai Jiu learned what that truly required—

That the white moonlight in Shen Wuyou’s heart, the novel’s original protagonist-shou, had to vanish completely from existence—

He hesitated.

For the first time, Bai Jiu began to wonder:

…Did this mission really have to be completed?
