I just finished reading My Summoned Creature Doesn’t Bite and I had to come here and write about it immediately. If you're expecting a story about a cute, fluffy companion based on the title, you are technically correct from the main character's point of view, but you're also hilariously wrong. This novel is a fantastic and unique take on the isekai and monster-taming genres. Our protagonist, Klein, gets a pretty terrible deal when he's transported to a fantasy world. He has no special powers, no cheat abilities, and is stuck... more>> living a miserable life in the slums. In a final act of desperation, he performs a summoning ritual and calls forth a creature that can only be described as a walking nightmare—a four-meter-tall horror of writhing black tent**les and countless mouths. But here is the absolute genius of the story: to Klein, this eldritch monstrosity is the most adorable, lovable, and loyal puppy in the entire world.

The entire narrative is built on this hilarious and heartwarming disconnect. The story is told from Klein's perspective, so we get to read his loving thoughts about his pet, Mungchi, while the rest of the world is screaming in terror and running for their lives. This dynamic never gets old and is the source of constant comedy. The writing style is casual and flows very well, making it an easy and addictive read. The pacing is also great, moving our duo from the slums to the wider world at a good clip, always presenting new challenges and new people to horrify. It doesn't get bogged down in overly complex systems or politics; it knows the heart of the story is the incredibly wholesome and strange bond between a boy and his cosmic horror pet. It’s a story that manages to be both a comedy about misunderstandings and a genuinely touching tale about finding family in the most unexpected of forms. I absolutely devoured this novel and would recommend it to anyone looking for something fun, fresh, and surprisingly sweet. <<less

This novel is about a Lovecraftian summoner. Klein is a slum transmigrator who summons a 5th ranked being. Most of the beginning of the novel is about Klein trying to get people to say Mungchi the summon is cute.

The gimmick of people not finding Mungchi cute will wear itself out, so I don't know if I can recommend this novel. Maybe the author finds something better to write about. Future readers can try the first 3 chapters and then decide if they want to drop it.
