When she was 23, Xiang Yan made a wish to the heavens, praying for just one more chance to see Zhou Ru.

To her surprise, the wish actually came true. Xiang Yan started crossing paths with Zhou Ru everywhere—at bars, in supermarkets, and at the corner cafe. Astonished by these coincidences, Xiang Yan began documenting every single encounter in her diary.

As the pages filled up, the story grew longer. In her neat, elegant handwriting, the young girl poured her heart out to the pages, asking time and again: “Does Zhou Ru actually like me?”

Later on, a twist of fate landed the diary right into Zhou Ru’s hands.

When it was finally returned, the pages were filled with tiny, handwritten annotations. Right beneath every single question, Zhou Ru had earnestly written back: “Of course I do.”

The first time Zhou Ru met Xiang Yan was on a pitch-black night.

Having just had a massive fight with her family, Xiang Yan was in a terrible mood. Feeling reckless and wanting to act out, she spotted a tiny flicker of light in the distance and walked toward it, intending to ask for a light.

As she drew closer, she realized it was a girl around her own age. With big eyes and fair skin, the girl was sitting in the freezing wind, shivering while holding a single lit match.

Zhou Ru froze. The words she meant to say caught in her throat, and in the end, she couldn’t utter a sound. Instead, she quickly sat down beside the girl, gently leaning in close.

The girl looked up, her voice soft and sweet. “What are you doing?”

Blushing, Zhou Ru parted her lips and whispered, “Borrowing a bit of your light.”

That temporary loan ended up lasting a lifetime.
