A high budget martial arts drama called “Magnificent” has taken the summer by storm. Gu Chong, a C-list actress who plays Yan Ruyu in the drama, finally skyrockets to fame in the entertainment industry after years of hard work.

At the celebration banquet for “Magnificent” on August 26th, she meets Lin Shangci, the screenwriter she’s been curious about for a long time. She appears more ordinary and pure than she imagined, like an observer floating above the world, or flitting at its edges…

The usually reclusive Lin Shangci finds herself awkwardly seeking help from her mentor and junior when faced with actors coming to toast her. What seemed like a brief encounter over a drink turns into a love story bound by the red thread of fate.

After the banquet, Lin Shangci returns home, only to find her phone bombarded with messages from a gossip group. A group member shouts, “Gu Chong’s car exploded right in front of me, and everyone inside is dead!”

The ticking seconds devour the present until the chime of midnight sounds. Lin Shangci falls asleep, dreamless, until her alarm wakes her in the morning. As she opens her eyes, she sees the date on her phone screen: July 24th. She had returned.

A tale of the reclusive screenwriter Lin Shangci and the C-list actress Gu Chong.

8/10 (Strong but not top tier)

A mystery/time loop novel that starts (and remains for most of the book) great with an extremely strong sense of atmosphere, but flags at the end. The way that the mystery unfolds and the general use of time travel and its effects are both done excellently. The dual protagonist PoV, especially early on, is also excellently combined with the time travel and mystery aspects to present a gripping narrative. The themes and growth of the characters and relationship are also enjoyable. It is true... more>> that, as is common with novels that share a particular aspect, the suspension of disbelief can sometimes feel a bit silly, but it isn't a huge deal. However, the final arc wrapping everything up does lose a lot of the atmosphere that permeates the rest of the novel, and generally feels like the author bit off more than they could chew.

Spoiler

Before getting to the actual complaint about the final arc, some commentary about the suspension of disbelief. Mostly this is just reasonable silliness. Some of the actions the villain is able to take are frankly kinda silly, but it's sort of expected with this sort of politically connected villain type, most books are not going to put that much thought into their political systems. However, occasionally the amount of influence that the villain has kind of feels like it varies to serve the plot rather than being consistent. For example, the scene where semi-known actress Gu Chong was killed in her room right after she has the police check her room with a witness that wasn't killed was... kinda silly. I get the idea that he can suppress the police or whatever but it's later established that he had problems and had to put in extra effort to deal with some rando online just posting asking about where her missing friend. This feels like it contradicts how much political pull he has from scene to scene, and also is just generally silly since it seems like it's practically bragging about him having power over the police. Not something you really want to do with higher-up connections that might abandon you if you keep pulling dumb stunts that increase the effort they have to put in to cover things up.

I'd also normally complain that the family aspect didn't really feel all that relevant thematically or as a plot detail, but in this case I think it did enough just acting as establishment for Lin Shangci's character and contrasting early on with how she seeks support from Gu Chong in the ending.

There are two 'actual' problems that I have. The first is the way that the relationship is handled late in the book. I found the memory recovery near the end of the book to be rather abrupt and to disrupt the flow of the character and relationship growth. It's a cool concept and in isolation it's a fine addition to the plot, something that can be called out as "a cool thing that happens", but in practice it just resulted in the part of the relationship where the issues are fully exposed between the two and the final form of the relationship is slowly forged to be awkwardly skipped over. Not really worth the tradeoff imo.

The second issue is the structure of the final act. The final arc tries to do an action then reveal plot structure, where the reader is left in the dark while the plot occurs and then things are explained afterwards. I think the problem is that overall, the final arc involved too much, and the balance of what was to be hidden and what was to be shown to the reader was off, so that it ended up feeling messy rather than a climactic reveal. For example, a major problem comes from which parts of the book are used to set this up. It of course makes perfect sense for dialogue, descriptions of actions the characters are doing, and other things of the like to be unreliable. These are elements that can be easily presented out of context and then reframed later to recontexualize entire scenes. However, the book also tries to do so using things that don't really make sense. For example, the narration claiming that "the same name occurred to both of them", when in-context clearly they were putting on a pre-planned show, or Tang Xu's joking awkward inner monologue that meeting with Gu Chong 'felt like cheating', which doesn't feel like it matches what Tang Xu, who is in on the plan and thus has an idea of the goal they are working towards, would be thinking about in that situation. It's not like we're dealing with elements of mind control or fourth-wall breaks that would cause objective book narration to mess with the reader. There's no reason why these elements of the book should be 'lying' to the reader, resulting in the execution feeling extremely messy. In addition, in trying to go for this structure, the atmosphere was sacrificed. The book cultivates a specific tone and mood throughout most of it that doesn't really mesh with this plot structure, and thus the final arc loses a lot of the background tone that elevated the story significantly.

I do think that the way that the story resolves is nicely thematic though. It represents both the relationship theme of Gu Chong and Lin Shangci learning to open up to each other and the story mechanic of using all the information gathered over the loops to pre-plan. However, it also involves the idea of bringing in outside help. This kind of works as an extension of the 'opening up to each other' theme, but it does kind of conflict with the "involving the innocent" theme to some extent brought up by Qi Qi's actions. The theme of 'opening up to others' also wasn't really particularly present, so the fact that the 'involving the innocent' theme was never really fully resolved presents a thematic clash that the book never really tries to address.

I loved this story! At first I thought it would become a bit repetitive due to the main theme being stuck in a timeloop, but I was greatly surprised! The moments between Lin shangsi and Gu zhong are really tender! Always discovering new things. The story is full of turns and very suspensful. I would definetly recommend this... the translation is also awesome.

As someone who loves time loop stories, *Listen to God* exceeded my expectations and has quickly become one of my favorite Chinese GL novels.

First, the storytelling is exceptional. I agree with other reviewer that it never feels repetitive, always keeping you on the edge of your seat. Second, the romantic elements are skillfully woven into the narrative without overshadowing the suspense and thriller aspects. Lastly, the translation is fantastic. It's refreshing to find a Chinese novel that doesn't overly describe the main character's appearance every after 2 sentences (though I... more>> might be exaggerating with the "every after 2 sentences" but you know what I mean).

If you're still unsure, don't hesitate. Go read it now! And be sure to support the translator! <<less

This was my first time loop light novel, and I have to say... I’m in awe of this author!! I was binge reading this story and during a handful of unexpected plot lines I found myself pausing, rereading the last paragraph, and finally sighing for the pain I felt for the character and appreciation for the authors words on making me feel this way. Truly a masterpiece and a hidden gem. Don’t hesitate on reading this one, you wont regret it.

8/10 Entertainment industry. Time Loop

Interesting premise, good initial set up of story and suspense building.

Ending felt rushed. Details didn't feel fully fleshed out properly and had lingering questions about involvement of "god" protrayed as this characters that pops in and out of the shadows. Ending felt anticlimatic due to the pacing despite a very solid start.

I really enjoy when characters show the desperation, commitment and grit to protect their loved ones, which this story did really well. I liked FL 's protrayal of indifference and impassiveness towards death after being... more>> worn down by fate. However, at the last 1/3 of the story, characters were being protrayed as continuously making rash and instinctual decisions, to a certain extent which I thought was understandable as they were begining to become exhausted of it all. But it was wishful thinking to hope that they would actually spend some time to properly plan rather than continue to jump head first into death and loop again. Hence the ending detracted from what would have been a solid 9/10 story.

Sporadically throughout the novel, there were pieces of really beautiful and poetic musings of the characters. Little gems hidden throughout that added a little spark. I wished there was more of those moments <<less

Only finished reading the main story at the time of the review, and this is an enjoyable one.

The majority of the novel is about the time loop, and the author did a great job at keeping the suspense and mystery around Lin Shangci and Gu Chong, in particular and prevented the story from feeling stagnant despite being a regessor novel. Together with the characters, we watch and learn as thing unfold, one by one and in the process, also watching them fall for each other.

I wouldn't say the love story... more>> is the sweetest, especially at the start since we don't really get an omniscient POV of Gu Chong's feelings (mainly about her actions/thoughts). While it doesn't come across as a surprise, I feel that the buildup to their relationship is a bit wonky, though things are great once they're together.

We don't get a lot of backstory about Gu Chong's family or her past, focusing mainly on her career journey, and I wish that's also something we get to see more to make us understand her more as a character.

Also, for a writer, I find Lin Shangci's reactions to the first few regressions being weird and frankly, almost silly. I understand she doesn't really know what to do, especially with her reclusivenes but she goes from 0 to 100 real fast. Feel free to disagree with this but surely a writer would analyze more things rather than just proceeding with the extreme that quickly.

There are some mysteries not answered in the main story, like
Spoiler

who is 'God' and are they the fortune teller that Lin Shangci's mom met back then?and also, again, curious about Gu Chong's background.

All in all, definitely a story worth checking out and I can't wait to read the remaining extras. <<less

Gonna say it upfront, this novel is incredible. I'm giving it a 10/10 immediately! I don't know why but every twist in this novel makes my chest feel constricted, just as it should since it's supposed to be suspenseful. This novel has that time traveling premise which is honestly hard to manipulate considering how insanely repetitive it can be like the previous reviewers here said. But the author is just brilliant! The translation is one of a kind, too. I know that Chinese isn't the easiest thing to translate, yet... more>> they translated each word beautifully. Every chapter keeps me guessing, as in I have no goddamn clue about what the hell is supposed to be coming, or who caused certain things to happen. Honestly, every time a loop ends, I always end up shocked like this face (•<>•)... also, it isn't hard to be deeply immersed in this novel's mystery, suspense, characters, and the world building. I genuinely fear for the consequences of the MC and FL's decisions throughout every loop, and that really shows how well thought out the story is. Plus, as an avid fan of subtle yet realistically-paced romance, the love between the MC and FL is fantastic! Not at all cringey unlike the other novels who immediately make the leads fall in love in the very first chapter... honestly, I'm not a big fan of "love at first sight" gl novels... (sorry >.<) In fact, the characters' romance was developed very reasonably, full of depth. I don't know how this story will end but I sure hope my heart won't be in too much pain. This story is very well-written, as it effortlessly combines mystery, tragedy, thriller, romance, and drama all at the same time. Might seem like an exaggeration, but with the amount of GL novels I've read throughout these years, this one had really kept me on the edge of my seat. For people who love a great mystery-thriller, this would be an excellent read!!!!!! (Thank goodness I gave this a chance T~T) <<less
