“We’re friends… can we really do this?”

Gu Wan-jae and Kang Tae-in were inseparable. Different in their own ways, yet bound by a friendship so strong that nothing seemed capable of breaking it.

Then, everything changed. Tae-in’s body started acting up. A prolonged fever led to a hospital visit, and the diagnosis was clear. Tae-in had manifested as an Omega.

It felt like the end. How could things ever be the same between him and Wan-jae now? But Wan-jae was surprisingly unfazed. So what? What’s the big deal? As always, he put loyalty and friendship first, brushing it off like nothing had changed.

Maybe he’d been too complacent. Because before long, something started happening to Wan-jae too.

If you’re an Alpha and I’m an Omega…Can we still be friends?

“Why not? Friends can do anything, can’t they?”

They were still friends. But something felt off.

“…Are we really supposed to be doing this?”

By the time they came to their senses, they had already crossed every line two friends never should.

I think this is one of those omegaverse novels that one might think is cliche. But it isn't, and once I finished reading it, I still felt satisfied with how it ended, and it still stands out on the list of novels I have read so far.

The story itself is about two teenage boys who became friends unexpectedly and how it spiralled into something beyond simple friendship when both of them, presumably Betas, manifested as Omega and Alpha respectively.

Spoiler

MC is the orphan who grew up in an orphanage. He is handsome to the point that kids around him call him pretty, but at the same time is very aloof and quiet. His teenage years were neither miserable nor great; he got his share of bullying, but whenever it happened, he tried to fight back whenever someone tried to raise a hand on him.

ML is a kid with an estranged family; his father pays for everything, but their relationship is as good as dead. This whole family situation leads to ML making his own choices in life, which might not be right, but eventually, he joins a gang. This alone will eventually influence the MC and ML relationship and story.

Those two are not perfect individuals, nor do they have perfect backgrounds or bright futures, but what anchors them is that they had each other in the whole world. But what story without some drama... there will be a time skip and both MC and ML will have a problem recognising each other.

I think it's not only a story of how friendship can exist alongside love, but also a story of finding each other when all hope is lost. It is not a fairy tale in any sense; their story is bittersweet, but also somewhat down to earth due to the struggles both of them experience.

All in all, 5* for me, it was bittersweet, and maybe I had some teary eyes in the end because it was also a bit tragic and it made me biased towards the whole story. *snif*snif* <<less

I'm super obsessed with those two friends!

I have to say Pingu from Emptymurmurs has a knack for picking in up good novels and this one is no exception.

Plot is about two boys who met in first year of their high school for delinquents. MC is orphan living in orphanage, ML is a kid living alone with uninvolved rich dad. Their friendship is very unlikely, because Tae-in quite kid who prefers stay away from attention, and Wan-jae is kind of delinquent, who likes to bully other delinquents. But somehow they click,... more>> and their friendship starts and hear me out, Wan-jae is just the best friend Tae-in could get. Their relationship as highschool kids is amazing, Wan-jae doesn't treat Tae-in less for being orphan, he says friends are one and acts based on this belief.

Their dynamic as friends don't change as much, once Taein manifests as omega, Wan-jae doesn't judge him for it, he still supportive friend, if anything Wan-jae becomes more protective. But when Wan-jae manifests as alpha shortly after this is what probably made him more overprotective then usual.

Their transition into adulthood is interesting change, as they move to a different place together for short period of time, and oh boy things got interesting from that moment, which finally brings shift into their dynamics as friends.

My rating so far:

5/5 for MC being handsome but still managing to stand for himself, and not being usual damsel in distress.

5/5 for ML being seriously adorable when he talks about friendship and how he treats Tae-in as friend while being a delinquent.

5/5 for a plot so far, both MC and ML are not perfect, technically both of them are orphans (Wan-jae's father is nothing but PoS, and just provides money), and their friendship makes both of them shine.

5/5 in general for me. Great friends to lovers story, can't wait to see how it's going to progress. <<less

I really loved the premise of how these two got together and they don't understand love because of their backgrounds and how they grew up. However, and this is a big one, I found myself very frustrated by the characters because almost all of their issues are due to a lack of communication. Which is really odd since they are best friends. Yes, both experience a lot of trauma but even when one of them has the key info they continue this pattern of talking past each other. I loved... more>> everything about this story except that which is why I think this is a 4 star rating. For those who want a clarification of the story I wrote the full spoiler below.

So MC and ML become friends and after the MC graduates the ML takes him on a trip with him as a tag along with his gang who is doing some sort of mission in a beach town. There the ML basically works up the MC little by little until they are not just besties but humping like rabbits. FYI when the MC learned he was an Omega because it was a late manifestation the doctors told him he is basically infertile - but of course he didn't stay that way. The ML is clearly madly in love with the MC and the MC is clearly a softie towards the ML but because they don't know that this is love and the ML is very rough around the edges he says things that it is preferable that they are f*ck buddies to him dating others and knocking people up. So of course when the MC finds out he is pregnant he takes that one basic statement even though the ML with his action is always taking care of him and worried about him and runs away. Skip to 5 years later and the MC is living a difficult life with a debt to a gang that basically want to make him a prostitute. The MC reunites by chance with the ML but they don't realize they know each other because the ML is known by a different name Yoon Donhwang and certain small identifiers are different. Well that is because the ML had a tragic accident after MC fled where he had to get some reconstructive surgery and also where he lost his memory. But the ML even under this different ID and with no memory still is naturally trying to take care of the MC and ends up liking him. The ML even does a background check on the MC and discovers they were childhood friends and they were together. Now it appears the ML was heavily traumatized by the accident because he doesn't want to live his original identity but instead of saying any of this and being like hey your suspicions are correct I'm actually Gu Wanjae he doesn't and instead ends up in this somewhat coercive but also supportive relationship with the MC and is constantly upset about the fact that the MC loves Gu Wanjae and had a child with him; when it is freaking him! It's almost like a dual-personality issue. So much of this conflict could have just been fixed by the ML disclosing his past and explaining he doesn't remember anything but also the MC answering some of the MLs questions instead of always closing up (mind you I know this is a self defense mechanism). Well while they are together the ML starts having recurring headaches and ends up in the hospital and basically begins to recover his memories but by this time it's too late to resolve this softly. Some horrible assault happens to the MC by that gang that wants to force MC into prostitution and he ends up in the hospital. This time the MC has lost his ability to speak and though he has surgery to fix that it is a long recovery. ML basically obliterates this other gang with his gang but uses up a lot of his resources to do so and gives all his remaining assets to MC as a way to take responsibility for their child and what he feels drove the MC to this situation. So instead of telling him he has regained his memories etc. He tries to stay away from him and contrives it to look like Yoon Donhwang, who is him, has died. The MC hires an investigator who ends up confirming that the Gu Wanjae the ML, and Yoon Donhwang are the same person and the reason why there are small differences in identifiers is because of surgery due to the accident the ML had which resulted in him losing his memory. But get this, even after learning all this the MC and ML still don't have a decent conversation about all this instead the MC manages to get with the ML by calling him Gu and that is enough for the ML to realize the MC has accepted both versions of himself. Though even this is unclear. They then finally have a happy ending but man all this could have been resolved and possibly avoided by talking to each other.

I don’t normally write reviews, and frankly I can’t put into words how incessantly frustrated this novel made me feel. While well-written, this novel’s ML is the worst. The beginning of the story displayed some of his problematic issues but for the most part was overcome by the sweetness of an enduring friendship. However, this joy was snuffed out by the second half and replaced by a series of miscommunications that was only exemplified by heart wrenching misfortune for the MC.

I won’t be reading any further. What ML has done... more>> is irredeemable in my eyes. I genuinely don’t understand how people can look past such a clear ab*se of power and blatant coercion.

What the MC endured was ab*se. It doesn’t matter if pleasure is involved, it doesn’t matter if at times the ML is kind. Using something someone loves as a weapon to force compliance is not love—it’s control. It’s manipulation. It’s ab*se. I don’t know how to make that any clearer. <<less
