A World Obsessed with Card Games Gets Its “Protagonist” Back! (Not Really)

In worlds where card games dominate everything, it’s almost a cliché for the fate of the world to hang on the outcome of a card battle.

I, Mitsuru Tanefuda, found myself reincarnated into such a world. Thankfully, my dream came true—I became the manager of my very own card shop.

In this world, people duel with cards, filled with joy and excitement, and I wanted to watch it all up close.

But for some reason, everyone seems to think I’m some legendary hero who solved massive crises in the past, watching over the next generation like a noble predecessor.

The truth is, I’ve never resolved any world-shaking incidents—not even once.

This is the story of a reincarnated man who became the manager of a card shop in a world where card games take precedence over everything else. Despite having no great achievements to his name, everyone around him assumes he must have been a hero who once saved the world.

Really love how chill this novel is. It’s a very slow life, slight misunderstanding, alternate universe with an unreliable narrator who sees everything through the lens of a TCG otaku so he casually explains how the world differs and what ridiculous things happen pretty regularly, but to the people of the world, he really is as mysterious and powerful as a former TCG anime hero who can overcome all sorts of obstacles and impart great wisdom to others.

I should've trusted the ratings rather than the 2 praising revs. This story is just fundamentally flawed from the grounds up. The core of the novel, which are the cards, its power system is just all something us readers are unable to understand as its all it the author's head. You'll also need to know how to somewhar play Yugioh, else you'll understand nothing about the novel so it has an entry cutoff.

This is clearly written with a anime adaptation focus rather than writing out a story for novel format.... more>> Unlike other card novels which are still fun to read, where their card systems are typically ability powers and such, this one– again Yugioh– has unrealistic card turn by turn duels which failed horribly both due to flawed novel form and the authors horrible skills.

But even with all this, this a tell-not-show novel. All the action sequences, events, and actions are always already to their conclusions in a sentence or two. Hence there are zero descriptions and developments.

Lastly my biggest gripe in this novel is that its just extremely childish and unrealistic. Heavy cliches and annoying character types are to be expected. And as this type of novel expect wacky hairdoes and overexagerated unrealistic chars. Hell even assassins dont easily stab someone, they instead force a duel when they could've otherwise easily killed and stolen their cards guaranteed 😮‍💨

There isnt really much possitives to write on this novel. You might as well consider it as a loosely based fanfic of Yugioh, which would be your only attraction to this book. Even the MC seems to be a possible pe*o as he's old 20s and all the core casts are elementary students to high school students, with all the girls being sexualized in their descriptions.

Doesn't help the tl site sucks as it forces u back to nu for next chaps as you otherwise get bombarded with patreon site subscription requests when u click something else like the next button <<less

A fun and relaxed story taking place in a Yugioh like world where everyone carries card decks for the same card game around with them, even the aliens visiting from other planets or dimensions (I would love to see what would happen if someone using a different card system/format showed up but it is unlikely in this story).

Edit: The card names have been fixed and the below no longer applies. Now how do I update my review scoring again?

The only reason I'm not giving the story a full 5... more>> stars is that the translator keeps messing up the card names and leaving them blank, probably due to the card names being surrounded by special characters like arrow brackets that are resulting in them being treated as code and thus stripped out when uploading the text to the website. That said, most of chapters only have 1 or 2 specific card names and the lack of them doesn't heavily detract from the story as a whole.

It is kind of funny to imagine a character shouting out the classic line about their monster but with it being beeped out.

"I activate [Blank]'s effects to destroy your monster Yugi!"

"You have activated my trap card! I reveal [Blank]. [Blank] prevents you from using [Blank]'s effects against my monsters when the moon is in retrograde!" <<less
