A "lovestory" of two serial killers, this book is such a beautifully gory, maniacal masterpiece like nothing you've ever read before.

Not for the faint hearted, the main characters are genuinely "evil"(psychopath MC x sociopath ML what can we expect?), but is honestly a life-changing experience that left me on the edge of my seat and a forever empty hole in my heart after reading.

A must read if you enjoy crime and mu*der, psychological battles, action, thriller, fleshed out main AND side characters and bonus point if you enjoyed the hannibal series <<less

The opening was so disturbing that makes you sick to the stomach, the 2nd person pov made it even more so with it's immersiveness. However after inital trauma and gore, the story quickly weaves you into a beautiful tale of  religion, sexuality, love and healing. Within less than 40 chapters, the author built an entire massive world of demons, magic and more within the eyes of mc and ml, it is a true masterpiece!  <<less

the romance is messed up but also kind of wholesome (???), it has an open ending, with the first ending being a BE (tragedy), and an ending II (HE) where our MC can finally be happy with his beloved ML.

I've read the other book (For A Lie) by the same author first and that book (sadly isn't on NU) really broke me, so this book did not hurt me as much as I braced myself for.

Another great novel that broke me. This book is set in WWII England, and is a biography of a maths genius who later worked for the government in the field of cryptography, it's about how he fell in love, worked to crack the code, and in the end betrayed by his nation and his love. The entire book really reminds me of the tragic life of Alan Turing (the MC's name is Alan as well?), with the cryptography and betrayal from the very own government they worked for.... more>>

I wouldn't consider this a "romance" novel and the ending is not really a "happy ending" even if MC and ML does end up together in their pretended "happily ever after" on ML's side, it is more of a realistic historical novel and destined tragedy caused by the time-period <<less

I first read this after reading BTTC and Swallowing the Seas and was interested because of MC's cameo in BTTC, and oh boy, I was not prepared for this. HuaiShang's earlier works are definitely A LOT more messed up and wild than her later works, and this book is a perfect example. The ML is such a red flag, he is abusive, violent, and a disgusting r*pist, but he's also the only one who could save MC in the end. And even though ML is a POS, he does truly love MC and is willing to improve himself and sacrifice everything for MC, so i will reluctantly accept them being together for MC's happiness (cos my dear Ci really do deserve it).

Ultimately, is it toxic and messed up? Yes! But is it a good story and did i enjoyed reading it? Also yes! <<less

It is like a R+18 version of the hunger games, but 10x more gory and messed up, as in this world, the "killing show" is like your daily entertainment reality show, filled r*pe, torture, brutal deaths, massacres, and more r*pe and torture. The actual romance is a slow burn and is honestly the most wholesome thing in this f*cked up world, both MC and ML are cunning and great fighters/killers, and they are really just doing their best to keep themselves and eachother alive. The book zooms in on capitalism, materilism and the exploitation from it, truly dystopian at it's "finest".

Don't be fooled by the synopisis, its a sci-fi and dystopian (wasteland type) novel that explores the strengths and weakness of the human nature and survival of the humankind in the face of the apocalypse. The romance is very subtle and is more  of an undertone under the tragic yet beautifull plot, but that doesn't make it any less sweet, the MC is the most adorable little mushroom and ML a flag as green as his beautifull eyes (seriously check out the manhua and you'll see what I mean)

Also MC’s background story is quite messed up as well (but more on that would involve spoilers). Other than that it is honestly not that dark, the main relationship is definitely green flag all the way, i love a good rivals to lovers trope and the banter between them are hilarious.  <<less

Some top tier Chinese horror, literally gave me goosebumps. Not a “romance” romance! Seriously don’t read this if you want a romance story, yes theres “romance” elements in it, but you won’t recover if you read it for the romance tag. It’s really a compilation of interconnected horror stories that involves “love” of supernatural beings. It’s very classic Chinese horror, unsettling and terrifying in a subtle way, definitely recommend if you like traditional Asian horror genres.... more>>

However it is not for anyone who’s faint of heart or weak in the stomach, as the 3 stories just gets progressively more disturbing (and dare I say, disgusting).  There’s also a sh*t tonne of TWs, including and not limited to bullying, child ab*se, body horror ( to the most extreme), cannibalism, human sacrifices and more. So definitely read with caution!

The first story is a good read for anyone who wants a good taste of some classic asian horror, with some of the aforementioned TWs (but rather tame in comparison to the next 2), the ending is a bit abrupt (author explained in the author’s notes that it’s because she want to write a nicer end, she does tell us the initial ending she planned, and although the original ending is very good, I am thankful for the much “happier” ending we got), overall the 1st story is a good thrill to read.

The next two stories however, is just pure madness. In the 2nd story the actual hardcore body horror kicks in, and believe me it will gross you out. If the 1st story already made you sick then just stop there, you can totally read them as independent stories, because trust me it will get sooo much worse. However if you hardcore enough for what is to come, then yes, you are for hell of a ride into despair and madness.  <<less

This is probably my favourite horror/supernatural story so far. I personally didn't find it scary and found it to be more action/quest heavy instead, and the horror aspect for me is more of a general atmosphere for the most part (because our protagonists are too reliable for me to be scared). However, the action is absolutely amazing , with the vivid and graphic descriptions of horrifying yet fascinating monsters and the arcs being solved infinity-flow esque, as well as some really mindblowing plot twists, it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.... more>>

While the overall tone is "not very dark" and is actually quite humorous, each arc does often involve very upsetting topics and there are definitly some TWs involved (animal ab*se, domestic violence, school violence, blood, body horror, gore, death and etc), each of the arcs can often be very emotional and can be some real tearjerkers.

Now I must talk about the characters, as I've grown so attached to many of them. I absolutely adore the MC and ML, I really love the MC, he is just so hilarious and mischievous (as well as OP but more on that in a minute), and the ML too, although he is extremely apathetic, he is still such a lovable dork and I love the rival to lovers dynamic between the two. One of my favourite thing about them is that both of them are inherently "good", while MC is literally a monster (as in he's physically a supernatural being), he is so kind hearted deep down and has a great love for people, and while the ML seems like an apathetic psychopath (there's a reason for the way he behaves such way but that's a major spoiler), he is still morally good because of the kind of love and care his parents (and later, MC) had given him. 

While most of the time I love morally gray characters, in this case, the "goodness" in MC and ML is actually what fleshed out their character the most for me, and shows that you really can't judge a book by its covers. The relationship between them is also very wholesome and fun to read, it is such a greenflag romance where both deeply care for eachover and both parties works hard to keep this relationship healthy. The side characters are also well fleshed out and lovable, and finally shout out to my personal favourite morally ambiguous character Miss Sorrow. <<less

It is a thrilling adventure with some really dark and disturbing imagery and implications. My only complain is that as this is only the first in the series, the ending feels a little abrupt and I desperately need the sequel asap. <<less
