Good no-nonsense reads

Good no-nonsense reads
Greetings to all prospective readers.

I have carefully selected works here that, though they may heavily differ in genre, style, prose, narration, and many other such basic elements, are all intrinsically well-polished and of good quality.

Now it is only fair that I forewarn you that, seeing as I am an older person and an avid book reader, the stories that I have chosen to include in this list will usually tend to be deeper, more mature works instead of lighter, more incoherent drama.

The list is not in any particular order, it was simply made as a pure whimsical product of my uncoordinated attempt at listing novels that I enjoy.

If you are looking for works to read casually and not invest yourselves in the story or take time trying to infer the underlying meanings the author has cleverly hidden in plain sight, look elsewhere.

This series is not well-known though it absolutely deserves to be. It's got one of the most badass, tremendously entertaining MCs you'll ever get to see. The cast is diversified and just plain excellent. The plot is incredibly original and complex yet not convoluted. The author delivers a metric ton of hilarious monologues and developments, but his story also contains a plethora of pure ''**** yeah!'' moments. ... more>>

This novel is pure otherworld slice-of-life gold. It chronicles the story of our protagonist, Zenjirou, as he gets transported into another world and quickly agrees to marry Aura, the queen of one of its countries. Through Zenjirou and Aura's sincerity and efforts, their willing compromises, what began as a marriage of convenience for both ends up becoming much more than that. ... more>>

This novel is deliciously dark and witty, describing in gory detail a pretty clear psychopath's manipulative attempts at gaining both love and power despite being an absolute weakling, of his willingness to do absolutely anything to get what he wants. The story delves into the usual ''saving the world'' trope but sets it aside as a byproduct of our MCs' quest for authority and selfish gain, as something of an additional boon to be found after having acquired dominance.... more>>

I normally hate face-slapping manhuas set in pseudo-historical periods. For one they're incredibly predictable, often times so s*upid as to be a bit cringe-worthy, but even worse than that is that they're almost always so unrealistic that they genuinely make me angry. Good thing then that this novel, though it has a bit of those face-slapping elements with the drama and jealousy amongst women, is one of those rare exceptions, a manhua dealing about marriage, feuds and dowries that is actually historically accurate, unpredictable, not overly dramatic, smart, and just plain good by all accounts.... more>>

I read the story in japanese and it is really good, but there are not many translations available, which is a shame. If you can't find translations, I implore you to check out the manga as it is very true to the novel and really well-drawn. The contents of the novels deal with age and the toll time can take on us in a bittersweet yet triumphant way that makes reading them a real joy. The characters are all believable, the world building is excellent, and the protagonist is an absolute badass old man, somewhat of a rarity for asian novels as these tend to glorify youth and leave only mentor or vilain roles for... more>>

The Grandmaster Strategist, put simply, is a novel about a highly-educated, devilishly smart man who, at first intending to live out his life easily as a lowly court official, unknowingly gives crucial information and strategies about conquest that he came up with on top of his head to an opposing nation's prince, precipitating his own country's demise. Then having to deal with the realities of conquest, being headhunted by someone vying for the throne of an enemy nation, losing his love to cruel jockeying for power, our main character must make the choice to either help or try to remain an illustrious outsider, though it may mean his death.... more>>
