I like to think of this as a bittersweet novel where the sweet comes to vastly outweigh the bitter (as of current update--48 chapters in). A very, very heartwarming journey. You fall in love with both leads. The pitfalls I see mainly boil down to the handling of autism (both in behavior and in treatment) in this story. It is, at once, both realistic and idealistic; at once, both "woke" and problematic. It's evident that the author has researched autism, clueing us into to this with the ticks and mannerisms of the ML as well as medical monologues. It is a realistic depiction of how autism is expressed, and how it affects those around (both good and bad). However, the trope of the "autistic savant", here "scholar syndrome", is overused in popular media and has the potential to perpetuate certain stereotypes about autistic people, the majority of which are not geniuses of the ML's ilk. Additionally, the ML's circumstances(handsome face, rich family) are conventionally favorable and make partnership a LOT more bearable, which is definitely not the case for many. That being said, it seems these points are addressed in text: it is explicitly mentioned that only a small percentage of the population are savants and that not all neuro-divergent people are able to get the treatment that they need. ML just happens to fall within the overlap of prime categories. And while the FL does struggle with being in a relationship with someone who thinks differently than she does, there are moments where ML's autism is romanticized. I think something that bears mentioning is how varied the spectrum is: ML cannot be considered a representative because of that diversity.

I wrote a lot, but in truth it's only my virtue-signaling, not so much a statement on quality. I mean, pfft, who am I to criticize the exaltation of beauty and wealth in romances now and not before? This is still an ultra-sweet and healthy romance that handles a nuanced topic with a surprising depth of maturity. I can easily overlook its faults, bearing in mind my outsider's perspective, both in terms of Chinese media representation and in terms of autism. Ultimately, no matter who we are, we all deserve love, and this novel is a very satisfying illustration of that maxim. <<less
